Tiki Wood Crafts

Tiki wood carvings are rooted in Hawaiian and Polyesian culture.

Tiki art celebrates Hawaiian and Polynesian cultural gods. Besides being used for home decorating, wooden carvings are valued for their meanings and cultural symbolism; among them to ward off evil, infertility, war, peace, rain or sunshine. Fijian wood carvings are typically carved from Vesi wood---also known as iron wood---which is kept buried in the ground for a few months to create the darkened finish.

Tiki Masks

Probably the most recognized tiki wood craft is the traditional tiki mask. Tiki masks typically represent the four important gods in Hawaiian and Polynesian culture: Kane, god of light and love; Ku, god of war; Lono, god of peace and fertility; Kanaloa, god of the ocean. There are dozens of other minor deities. Wood carvings are very detailed and although they may be painted, most tiki carvings are stained.

Tiki Statues

Carved tiki warrior statues can be created to depict primitive tiki chiefs. They may be holding spears or a stick with skull atop, depicting a head hunter. Oversized eyes and other features add to the design. Figures can be adorned with grass headbands and grass skirts. More lighthearted statues can be crafted with warriors on surfboards, wearing sunglasses or using a Polynesian paddleboard.

Tiki Shield

Shields carved with tiki masklike faces make interesting wall d cor. Look for mask examples in books or online and sketch a replica to carve out of wood; many carvers use old palm tree trunks. The more intricate the carving, the better the effect.

Tiki Headhunter Spear

Polynesian headhunters' spears are typically crafted of a carved wooden stick, wrapped with a dried woven grass and topped with an iron spearhead. You can carve a replica of the spear using either a stone flint shaped with a point and attached with raffia or other grass material. Another option might be to carve the entire spear from shaft to spearhead out of wood.

Tiki Totem Pole

Tiki totem poles typically have exaggerated features.

Depending upon the size, you can carve a tiki totem pole from either a thick branch or log. Many totem poles reflect multiple depictions ranging from tribal chiefs, warriors, symbols of luck, health, peace or symbols of the natural world. The backs are usually left plain, with the intricate carving done on the face of the log. Large poles can be placed outdoors in a garden area, while smaller ones can be placed on a tabletop. Tiki totem poles can be stained or painted with various colors; still others may be dyed with red clay to give them an authentic look.

The six tourist-friendly islands of Hawaii each have their own unique identity.

Though eight different islands comprise the state of Hawaii, each island has its own unique identity, characteristics and attractions. Due to the diversity of the islands, the six Hawaiian islands tourists can visit have each acquired a unique nickname describing a particular attribute that makes each island famous. The other two islands, Kahoolawe and Niihau, cannot be visited by tourists.

Hawaii

The largest island in the state of Hawaii appropriately earned the nickname "Big Island." The youngest Hawaiian island is not only the largest--it is in fact still growing. The growth of the island is a result of the active volcanoes on the island, particularly Kilauea, the world's most active volcano.

Maui

The second largest Hawaiian island is known as "Valley Isle." The island is known for its large valley, which is home to various vegetation. A scenic drive on the Road to Hana, complete with 54 bridges and 600 different curves, features extensive views of the valley and its greenery.

Oahu

"The Gathering Place" is the third largest and the most populated of all the Hawaiian islands. The capital of the state, Honolulu, is located on Oahu, drawing in a large population of people. Furthermore, Waikiki, Pearl Harbor and various restaurants and nightlife attract a large amount of tourists.

Kauai

The fourth largest island is nicknamed the "Garden Isle" because of the vast amount of plant life on the island. The island is the oldest of the Hawaiian islands and features various rainforests and waterfalls. Some locations on Kauai are accessible only by air or water. Views of the island's famous vegetation can be seen by hiking, snorkeling, kayaking and zip-lining.

Molokai

Known as the "Friendly Isle" because of its high percentage of indigenous people, Molokai is the second smallest Hawaiian island. The large indigenous population preserves the traditional Hawaiian culture throughout the island; in fact, Molokai has no traffic lights. The traditional culture combined with a lack of modern stress led to its nickname.

Lanai

The smallest Hawaiian island is known as "Pineapple Island." James Dole purchased the 16-mile-wide island in 1922 for $1.1 million. He created a plantation and began exporting canned pineapple throughout the world. At one point, Lanai was responsible for exporting 75 percent of the world's pineapple. However, in the 1980s, the pineapple business on Lanai began to decline.

Types Of Geckos In Hawaii

Although they aren't native to Hawaii, at least nine types of geckos live in the state.

One gecko is all it takes to colonize an area. A number of gecko species are parthenogenetic, meaning they can spawn asexually. When one female is introduced to an area, such as an island, it can lay unfertilized eggs that hatch into clones of the mother, according to Explore Biodiversity. It is unclear how the lizards made it to Hawaii, but there are at least nine species that inhabit the islands.

Common House Gecko

The light-gray common house gecko has spread from Asia to around the Pacific, including Hawaii. They are nocturnal, and Hawaiians see them in house lights more than any other gecko. They eat mostly insects, but larger adults may dine on spiders, invertebrates and occasionally a younger, smaller gecko.

Mourning Gecko

Cream-colored with dark spots, mourning geckos thrive in Hawaii as well as much of the rest of the Pacific islands. They eat small insects, such as crickets and waxworm larvae, but they also enjoy some human foods like baby food. They can also be cannibalistic, eating the yolks of their own species' eggs. They can live in several types of habitats: trees, rocky shorelines and cities.

Stump-Toed Gecko

Also known as the four-clawed gecko, the stump-toed gecko gets its name from its lack of an inner claw--most geckos have five. The stump-toe is as versatile with its habitats as mourning geckos. Their skin tends to be somewhat translucent, giving them a dark-pink or purple tone.

Indo-Pacific Gecko

The Indo-Pacific gecko distinguishes itself from other house geckos with its yellow or orange stomach. During the day, its skin is a dark gray or brown with markings. It then fades to a lighter, almost translucent color at night.

Indopacific Tree Gecko

The smallest lizards in Hawaii, Indopacific tree geckos have slender, translucent bodies that lack spines or the tubercles many other geckos have. Their bodies are 2.2 to 3.5 inches, with equally long or longer tails. Also separating them from other geckos is their habitats, which are mostly forested areas and no urban ones.

Tokay Gecko

Tokay geckos get their name from the males' nocturnal territorial cry, which sounds like "to-kay." The lizards are extremely territorial and may attack intruders with bites strong enough to lacerate human hands. They can grow as large as 14 inches head-to-tail. Because of their size and aggression, some people release them in houses to fend off cockroaches.

Orange-Spotted Day Gecko

The orange-spotted day gecko radiates color with its bright green body, orange lines and light-blue neck and shoulders. It is predominantly on the island of Oahu, but it is native to a small island east of Madagascar. Along with eating insects, orange-spotted day geckos drink nectar and sap from flowers and fruit.

Gold Dust Day Gecko

With bright green and yellow colors, the gold dust day gecko is similar to the orange-spotted day gecko. But instead of blue, it has golden specks on its shoulders and neck. It has blue rings around its eyes with reddish marks on its snout and head. The gecko lives on the islands of Hawaii, Oahu and Maui.

Giant Day Gecko

Second in size out of all the Hawaiian geckos to the Tokay, the giant day gecko can reach as long as 11 inches head-to-tail. They are common in the Florida keys, but scientists discovered them in 1996 in Hawaii. They mostly live on Oahu and in the Manoa Valley. People mostly find them living around buildings. They are agile climbers and spend little time on the ground.

Things To Do At A Teenage Bonfire

Relax with friends at a beach bonfire.

One of the coolest types of parties a teen can have is a bonfire. Popular teen shows often include the teen characters gathering around a bonfire and some high schools even host senior bonfires. Although an adult should always be around to make sure the fire doesn't get out of hand, a bonfire is an ideal opportunity to bond with your closest friends or class. Reminisce

If the bonfire is to celebrate graduation or the end of the school year, take the time to sit around the fire and talk about the crazy, funny and wild stories of things that happened in the past year or during high school. It will be fun to look back on moments that may have seemed so serious and be able to laugh at the situation. If the bonfire consists of mainly your closest friends and you are all graduating, take turns talking about how much everyone means to you or exchange small parting gifts with each other.

Play Games

Use the light of the fire to play beach volleyball, making sure the net is far away from the flames. Set up an impromptu game of flag football or relay races. If the bonfire is co-ed, have a powder puff flag football game, where the girls play football and the guys cheer on the sidelines. You can also play interactive social games like "questions" where you must answer a question with a question to stay in the game, or divide up the group into two teams and play charades.

Dance and Sing

Bring a radio and speakers to the bonfire so everyone can dance to their favorite songs. Bring CD's of the most popular current artists and have a wide range of music if you are inviting a diverse group of friends. Ask the other teens to bring their CD's or mp3 players as well. Have a dance contest to make it more interesting. Lead the group in a raucous rendition of the high school anthem, or the chosen class song.

Eat

Serve simple campfire food and snacks during the bonfire party. Bring hot dogs to roast in the fire, as well as marshmallows, chocolate bars and graham crackers to make s'mores. Other food ideas include popcorn packaged in foil that you can pop over the fire, corn on the cob also roasted in the fire and trail mix. Another nice touch is a bucket of candy, a treat that all the teens are sure to love.

Homemade Ornament

Pour out a golf ball-sized amount of craft glue on a paper plate. Then pour a half cup of very small beads into a bowl. Use a paint brush to apply the glue to a glass ball ornament, covering the entire surface of the ball except for the metal at the top. Roll the glass ball into the beads to completely cover the ornament. Be sure to let the ornament dry overnight on a flat surface. Finally, run a piece of ribbon or an ornament hook through the top of the ornament.

Fleece Throw

Begin by gathering 3 yards of two different colors or patterns of fleece material. Next, pin both pieces of fleece together at the ends with straight pins. Using scissors, cut fringe on the edges of the fleece 3 inches in and about 2 inches apart. Begin attaching the top piece of fleece to the bottom piece by tying the fringe into knots. Work your way around the entire throw until all of the fringe is tied, making sure each knot is tight. Finally, carefully remove all of the straight pins from the throw and examine it for any untied fringe.

Tie Dye Tote

Gather a white tote bag and crinkle it into a ball. Then put rubber bands around it to secure it into the ball shape. Next, put on rubber gloves to protect your hands and go outside. Carefully fill squeeze bottles with different color dye solutions according to the directions on the back of the dye box. Using your squeeze bottles; squeeze small amounts of different color all over the tote bag. Once you have applied all the colors you would like to use, place the tote bag into a plastic bag and let it sit for 24 hours. Leaving the rubber bands on; run the tote under cold water. Then, run it under hot water while carefully removing the rubber bands. Keep rinsing the tote until the water runs clear. Place the tote in your washing machine and let it wash through one cycle. Finally, place the tote in a dryer to dry. You can use fabric softener if you wish to decrease stiffness in the fabric.

If you want to avoid the crowds and save some money and you don't mind cold, wet weather, February can be a good month to visit Europe. February is the off-season, and rates for hotels, airfare and attractions go down. There are fun things for tourists to do throughout Europe in February.

Northern Europe

Northern Europe is usually especially cold and snowy during February, and the daylight hours dwindle the farther north you travel. Visiting places like Norway and Sweden may limit your outdoor activities. But if you are a winter weather enthusiast, these countries can be dazzlingly beautiful in February, with activities like dog sledding, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing available. Best of all, February is one of the best months to see the northern lights.

Middle Europe

Middle European countries, like France and Germany, will likely also have winter weather conditions during February, but the temperatures should not be prohibitive to travel. January through March offer the best snow season of the year, so February marks the midpoint of prime ski season. The five mountain ranges in France provide diverse opportunities for winter sports. They are the Alps, the Jura, the Vosges, Pyrenees, and the Massif Central. Skiing may also be available on Corsica, although conditions there are unpredictable. Early February is Carnevale in Venice, when revelers don elaborate masks and parade through the streets and canals. Teacher Appreciation Week, a week designated to honor teachers for educating and inspiring our children, is held the first full week of May each year. Many schools choose to celebrate by hosting a luncheon for teachers as the big event of the week. Having a theme for the luncheon adds an air of festivity and gives you direction for planning the food, decorations, invitations and entertainment.

ABCs of Appreciation

A fun theme for a primary school teacher appreciation lunch could be "The ABCs of Appreciation." The invitations can be done using a font that looks like kids' printing or on paper with a set of ABC blocks on it. The decorations are done in primary colors with big letters posted around the room.

When it is time to set the menu, make foods and serve them in alphabetical order. Avocado in tomato salad could be the appetizer, followed by barbecue chicken, then chocolate cake.

For a recognition certificate, spell out the teacher's name and have students create a list of qualities about the teacher that they appreciate. Example: A teacher named Carol might receive a certificate that says: C -- Caring, A -- Awesome, R -- Really Smart, O -- Optimistic, L -- Likable. The menu itself would be less important than serving the food as fashionably as possible. Renting nice dishes and glassware would be a very nice touch.

Each teacher would receive an award for something special that is unique to them. The awards could be custom coffee mugs. To announce the next teacher to get their certificate two students could open envelopes and then present the award. If there are teachers who are retiring, they could win a lifetime achievement award.

Garden Party

A simple but elegant lunch with tons of flowers in abundance could form a garden party theme. The invitations printed on floral paper and delivered with a carnation launch the theme. Decorations are potted flowers and flower seed packets.

Each family could bring a salad ingredient--one that could be fresh from the garden--and the lunch is a salad bar with hot baked bread on the side.

Each teacher would be presented with a packet of notes from students and parents and get to choose a potted flower to take home.

Preschool Science Activities For Fish

Preschoolders are fascinated by the ocean and its mysteries.

The ocean and its inhabitants provide plenty of opportunities for kids to learn and create. In addition to learning interesting facts about fish, they can also practice their colors, numbers, sizes, patterns and shapes. Kids learn by doing and repetition. Surround them with a class environment that encourages them to explore and talk about the theme throughout the day. For example, provide books about fish in the book area and eat fish crackers, tuna salad or fish sticks as a snack.

Naming Activity

Both a lionfish and a lion have beautiful manes.

The goal of this activity is to familiarize the children with some fish names. Each kid will get a chance to pull out a plastic fish or a laminated photo of a fish from a bag, name it and put it in water. To facilitate this activity, provide a water table or any other container filled with water.

Bring a bag filled with pairs of items taped together, such as a lionfish and a lion or a hammerhead shark and a hammer. One item is the actual fish and the other is the clue for the name of the fish. Fish with colors are interesting for this activity, including blue fish, yellowtail and goldfish. These could be paired with crayons of the same color.

Fish that have animal names are exciting for preschoolers. In this category you can use seahorses, elephant fish, lionfish and zebra fish. Other fish of interest are hammerhead sharks, saw sharks, sailfish and stone fish. Repeat the activity several times with new fish each time.

At the end, give the kids paper in the shape of a fish and let them color the fish and then name it according to how it looks.

Camouflage Activity

A leafy sea dragon provides a great example of camouflage.

Learning about fish is a great opportunity to learn about animals blending in their environment. Preschoolers can understand that fish eat other fish, and that fish might need to hide in order to catch a meal or avoid becoming a meal. Even if they cannot fully understand this concept, most children enjoy a game of hide and seek or peek-a-boo, so they can understand what the fish are doing on a more playful note.

Explain that fish can camouflage by changing their colors or by adopting a shape that is similar to their environment. Show photos of a stone fish, octopus, sea dragon and other marine animals that are in the process of blending with their surroundings. Then play hide and seek shark in a field or a gym.

To play, scatter different colored hula hoops around the gym. You can also use other materials to add shapes or patterns, such as stripes. As you call out different fish names, such as bluefish or zebra fish, the kids have to find the appropriate camouflage and get there by making swimming motions. Kids enjoy being fish and running toward their hiding spots when you act as a shark that is coming to get them.

Ocean Art Activity

This is an activity that preschoolers can slowly add to as the unit on fish progresses. An aquarium with a lid is great for this activity. Another option is to take a big box, cut large rectangles out of each of its sides and tape clear plastic wrap to the cut sides. As the children learn about the ocean and its inhabitants, they can add those items to the aquarium.

First they add sand to the bottom. Then they can find rocks outside and glue pieces of green tissue paper to them. Those rocks with "seaweed" can be coral and lay right on top of the sand or on top of each other. The kids can add starfish, jellyfish, sharks, fish of different colors, fish with different patterns and fish of different sizes. They can add schools of fish while counting the number of fish in each school.

It is useful to tie each fish with a blue string and suspend it from the top of the box. This gives the illusion of fish swimming at different depths. Finally, add some blue paper waves around the fish.
