The Philippine Flag

Nasugbu is in the province of Batangas and has some of the Philippines' finest beaches, many with clear blue waters, coves and white sands. Resorts have been and continue to be developed along the shores of these beaches. A number of them have banquet halls and offer water sports such as diving, swimming and waterskiing, in addition to having scenic sunsets and surroundings.

At night, a band plays atop a large stage that overlooks the dance floor. Guests are encouraged to sing with the band or to dance to its music. This can at times go on until 3 a.m. Sports like basketball, volleyball, badminton, billiards and darts are played in the daytime. Themes For A Christian Luncheon

Lunch themes for Christian organizations and church groups provide purpose to the meeting.

a meeting, or any other activity that takes more than an hour or two and someone will propose that everyone bring a dish and share food or have food brought in. While food can accompany many church activities, a Christian luncheon is an planned event that normally follows some sort of theme.

Annual Meetings

Churches and other Christian organizations utilize annual meetings to keep members apprised of financial, business and event information. For such meetings, possible themes include "Looking Back: A Year in the Life," "Where Do We Go from Here" or "You Are Here." Table decorations might include snapshots of events from the last year, rolled up scrolls containing the annual report or snapshots and vitas of officer candidates for the coming year. While people are eating, a slide show or video can highlight completed goals, proposed new projects and candid shots of members in action.

Prayer

Most Christian organizations include prayer as a valuable tool and faith practice. Several days dedicated to prayer populate the U.S. calendar, including the National Day of Prayer, World Day of Prayer and See You at the Pole. A luncheon on any of these days could use the theme of prayer. Table decorations could include figures of praying hands, notepads for participants to list prayer requests submitted by tablemates or a table runner with the theme for the prayer event such as "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" used as the 2011 National Day of Prayer.

Stewardship

Many organizations focus on stewardship and charitable giving as a way to raise funds. Christian organizations seeking to raise funds could invite former contributors and new friends to a stewardship themed luncheon. The speaker might discuss ways the organization uses funds or encourage the potential contributors that their donations evidence good stewardship. A tree with paper clips could invite luncheon attendees to clip a check or cash to the money tree. Pictures of various organization projects show donors how their gifts are utilized.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving luncheon themes encourage Christians to count their blessings and thank God for the many ways they are blessed. Luncheon attendees might share testimonies of God's provision with table mates. A speaker focuses on different ways believers are blessed, including answered prayer, comfort in crisis and unexpected miracles. Table decorations could include Bible verses about thankfulness such as II Samuel 22:50, "I will give thanks and extol You, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing praises to Your name." or I Chronicles 16:34, "O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy and loving-kindness endure forever!"

What Is The Meaning Of Hawaiian Leis

Traditional leis of flowers, shells, feathers or vines all hold special meanings, many of which are tied in with Hawaiian myths and legends. Hawaiian folklore states that the very first lei, made of red Lehua flowers was given to the volcano goddess Pele by her sister Hi'iaka, goddess of the hula. Leis are used in greetings, at weddings, graduations and celebrations of all kinds.

Leis at a Birthday Party

Lei History

Polynesians who voyaged to Hawaii from Tahiti introduced the lei. They were worn as a form of decoration, just as we wear jewelry today and were given in greeting or to honor the recipient.

Permanent Leis

The royalty of Hawaii, the ali'i, often wore permanent leis made of feathers, beads, ivory, or teeth. Shell leis from the island of Niihau, an island near Kauai, were treasured in ancient Hawaii. Today, they are very expensive.

Leis and Pregnancy

Hawaiians believe that leis have special life-giving powers. Pregnant women are advised to wear open leis because the ancient belief is that leis represent umbilical cords. The lei must be open so as not to restrict the life flow between the mother and her unborn child.

Island Leis

Each island has its signature lei flower. In addition to the shells for Niihau and the red Lehua for the Big Island, Oahu favors the orange Ilima. Maui's choice is the Lokelani, a small rose. Kauai uses a green vine and berry called the Mokihana and Molokai has the Kukui, the white blossom of the Candlenut Tree. The yellow moss, Kuanaoa, is Lanai's choice.

Fragrant Maile

The maile lei is worn by all classes of Hawaiians. The green leafy vine has a sweet, spicy perfume and is favored for dancing the hula. It is also used in weddings, where it is traditional for the groom and the best man to wear open ended maile leis.

Fun Fact

During World War II, a soldier received a kiss from a Hawaiian entertainer before his lei was placed upon his neck. The practice quickly became a modern Hawaiian tradition. The gift of a lei in this fashion is an outward symbol of "aloha," which can mean "hello," "welcome," or "love."

The Best Finger Food Appetizers

Finger food appeitzers

The best finger food appetizers are prepared easily, served easily and are unique to the ubiquitous pigs-in-a-blanket. Ultimately, it depends on your party atmosphere to choose appetizers that encompass the above qualities, but also fit into the party's theme. An outdoor barbecue party will have "best" finger foods that are different from a luau or upscale cocktail party. Fortunately there are many possibilities for simple appetizers to fit any occasion. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Antipasto Platter

Antipasto literally means "before the meal" and is quintessential Italian fare. If your party has an Italian theme or is a casual get together, an antipasto platter will satisfy your guest's appetites despite the easy preparation. This platter is essentially a combination of meats and cheeses and is usually served with wine. Make sure that you have toothpicks and small napkins on hand for the guests.

Examples of antipasto platter combinations are marinated artichoke hearts served with water crackers and Camembert cheese, shaved prosciutto with fresh cantaloupe chunks and a bowl of mixed nuts and toasted focaccia bread with sardines and sweet onions. Olives, capers, sweet pickles and salami are often seen on a traditional antipasto tray.

Spinach-&- Brie-Topped Artichoke Hearts

These little delicacies play on the classic appetizer, spinach and artichoke dip. They are compact and easy to eat, especially with a toothpick. Because of their size, they can be served among standing guests and will work well as cocktail party appetizers. The combination of sweet brie cheese, the savory/salty taste of spinach, and the texture combination of all three ingredients is for adult taste buds.

Making these appetizers is easy. Season spinach with lemon pepper, place it on top of thawed artichoke hearts, top with the cheese and place in your broiler.

Mini Portobello Burgers

If wine, cheese and cocktail parties aren't for you and your set of friends, you may want to try mini portobello burgers. As they are without meat, you don't have to worry about juices dripping, and they work well for both vegetarian and omnivore partygoers. These will complement a backyard get-together that has beer on the beverage menu

These will be easy to make, especially if you have a counter top grill at home. You will need portobello mushrooms, brioche buns, eggplant, zucchini, Swiss cheese and salt/sesame oil to taste. Grill the vegetables, layer them on the bottom half of the bun, top with cheese and broil for approximately 1 minute. Put the bun tops on and serve them to your guests.

Spongebob Decorating Ideas For The Walls

If you have a SpongeBob SquarePants lover in your house, you're in good company. SpongeBob is one of America's favorite characters. It's no wonder so many people are looking for SpongeBob wall decor ideas. You can create a mural of Bikini Bottom, buy or make SpongeBob wallpaper or hang up framed SpongeBob wall art. Does this Spark an idea?

Bikini Bottom

SpongeBob lives in Bikini Bottom, a sandy place with distinctive architectural styles. His own home is a pineapple; Patrick Star lives under a dome-shaped rock; and in between them, Mr. Squidward's home is an Easter Island head. You can use a projector to trace an image of Bikini Bottom onto your wall with a pencil, then paint your own SpongeBob mural.

SpongeBob Wallpaper

You can buy SpongeBob wallpaper at many major home decorating retailers. Nickelodeon has licensed many SpongeBob images for decorating purposes. You also can make your own SpongeBob wallpaper. Print your favorite images and dip them in wallpaper paste. Smooth them out, press into the wall, and--voila--you have homemade SpongeBob wallpaper. For a less permanent solution, try removable wall decals.

Framed SpongeBob Wall Art

You can buy SpongeBob framed artwork to hang on your wall. Major retailers with poster displays often feature SpongeBob prominently. If you don't want to buy SpongeBob art, you can replace the artwork in a thrift-shop frame with your own SpongeBob pictures, printed from the web or cut from other sources.

What Happens To A Mortgage When The Borrower Dies

Lenders require mortgage repayment, one way or another, when the borrower dies.

A mortgage is a class of secured debt, or debt on which payment is guaranteed by an asset or lien. If the debtor does not repay the debt, the lender can take possession of the asset and resell it. In the case of a property with a mortgage, when the borrower dies one of several scenarios may play out, each leading to repayment of the mortgage.

Property Transfer

Typically, property transfers to an heir or surviving joint tenant after the borrower's death. Although the responsibility to repay the mortgage does not automatically transfer to the person who takes possession of the property, the mortgage must nonetheless be paid because the property remains tied to the mortgage irrespective of the original borrower's disposition. If it is not paid, the lender will most likely foreclose upon the property.

Due-On-Sale

Most mortgages include a due-on-sale clause which allows the lender to demand payment in full of the outstanding loan balance when the property transfers, whether through sale, inheritance or other means. If there is no due-on-sale clause, the new owner can assume the loan by notifying the lender and making payments on the mortgage. If there is a due-on-sale clause, the new owner must make some arrangements to have the mortgage paid off or risk the lender foreclosing on the property.

Exceptions

In 1982, the Garner-St. Germain Depository Institutions Regulation Act included provisions that prohibited lenders from exercising the due-on-sale clause under a several circumstances. These include transfers to a spouse or child who will live in the residence, to a surviving joint tenant or to a spouse or child in a court-ordered divorce settlement. The debt is still tied to the property, but the new owners in these circumstances are allowed to assume the mortgage.

Options for New Owners

If there is a due-on-sale clause and the new owner does not fall under one of the exceptions cited in the Garn-St. Germain Act, the new owner must get permission from the lender to assume the loan, which the lender may or may not grant, or take out a mortgage in his own name to repay the original borrower's mortgage. A third option is continue making payments on the mortgage without assuming it in name; however, the lender could enforce the due-on-sale clause and demand immediate repayment at any time.

Safety Bingo Rules

Safety Bingo motivates employees to avoid workplace accidents.

Safety Bingo was invented in 1987 by Pam Goodman-Perlmutter to help reduce workplace injuries--and the cost of Workman's Compensation insurance--at her family's business. With more than 50 employees who were not English-speaking, communicating and motivating safe workplace behavior was a real challenge. But with Safety Bingo in place, the business reported improvements in not only workplace injuries and accidents, but also a boost in employee productivity, morale and attendance. After just 18 months of Safety Bingo, the company's Worker's Compensation expense went from more than $140,000 to just $721.

The Playing Board

Safety Bingo comes with a full-color, 18-inch-by-24-inch playing board to be displayed where it's visible to all employees. The board displays the game's start date, the date of the company's last accident, the "daily numbers" which have been drawn, the "bonus number," and the prize that the winner receives at the end of the game.

The Playing Cards

The playing cards for Safety Bingo are similar to traditional bingo cards, except that instead of spelling "B-I-N-G-O" across the top, the top letters spell "S-A-F-E-T-Y." Underneath each letter are five random numbers which may be drawn from the Safety Bingo pool of numbers. At the start of each game, every employee receives his own playing card.

Daily Numbers

Each day, a new "daily number" is drawn from the pool and added to the playing board for all of the employees to see and note on their playing cards.

Winning the Game

As soon as an employee has completed a row of five numbers on her playing card, either vertically, horizontally or diagonally, she returns her playing card and wins the prize. Prizes could be cash awards, paid days off, or other workplace perks. The next day, new cards are issued to the employees, and the game begins again, this time with a larger prize.

Workplace Injuries

If a workplace injury occurs, the game ends immediately, all current playing cards are voided, and the playing board is wiped completely clean. The game resumes the next day with a brand-new playing board, new playing cards, and the game prize returned to its lowest level. As a result of this pattern, employees are progressively motivated by bigger and bigger awards to be more aware of workplace hazards and to prevent workplace accidents.

Mickey Mouse Birthday Party Invitation Ideas

The right invitations can really help make your party.

When it comes to universally appealing birthday themes, you can't go wrong with Disney and Mickey Mouse. Appropriate for both a kids party or an adult affair, Mickey Mouse provides an excellent and fertile topic to work with when planning your themed event. To kick things off properly, you will want to put together some imaginative invitations. Does this Spark an idea?

The Subtle Mickey Invite

Since he was first created in 1928, Mickey Mouse has become something of a household name. As with many such icons, it is wholly possible to infer Mickey Mouse's presence and influence on an event without ever actually picturing him. Black hats with black ears, red shorts with white buttons, yellow shoes and white gloves are all synonymous with Mickey Mouse. Create invitations that take advantage of his fame by featuring only these parts and pieces. Design each invitation around one separate piece of Mickey memorabilia, or create simple black and white invitations with a border of gloves, shorts and shoes. This style works extremely well for a more sophisticated, adult party.

The Creative Mickey Invite

If you are in the position where you can hand-deliver your invitations, then there is no reason not to get a little more creative with your Mickey Mouse invitations. Mickey Mouse ear hats can be purchased from Disney directly and then used as a clever invitation. Simply attach a card with the party information to one of the ears and you have an invite that will have everyone talking.

Edible Invitations

Another delicious, hand-delivered option for a Mickey Mouse invitation is a Mickey Mouse cookie invitation. Make simple sugar cookie dough and roll it out onto a flat surface. Use two differently sized round cookie cutters to cut out head and ear shapes. Stick the ears onto the sides of the main head shape and bake the cookie at 350 degrees. Frost your Mickey head cookies with the colors of your party, and pipe the words "You're Invited" onto them using a decorating tip and some icing. Allow the icing to set, and then wrap each cookie in cellophane. Tie the cellophane with red, white, yellow and black curling ribbon, and attach a note with the party details to the ribbon. Just like that, you have an invitation that will leave your guests hungry for more.

Quiet Vacations In Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico can be a tranquil island getaway.

While Puerto Rico is generally known for beach parties, tropical drinks and a lively nightclub scene, there are a variety of places on the island that offer calmer, more scenic vacations. The diverse and stunning landscape, the tranquil ocean and the lush rain forests all lend themselves to one of these more low-key getaways.

Old San Juan

Away from the hustle and bustle of San Juan, Old San Juan has many places for quiet relaxation. The boutique hotel Casa Herencia offers a rooftop view of tranquil San Juan Bay. With only eight guest rooms, this quaint and intimate hotel is in a renovated colonial building that also has a library. Old San Juan, meanwhile, features a variety of quiet sightseeing activities. Nearby, lush rain forests offer hiking opportunities. And Puerto Rico's mountains or beaches are also quiet havens for relaxation or reflection.

Vieques

Vieques, a sister island of Puerto Rico, offers an escape from the touristy and sometimes hectic main island. Travelers enjoy sparsely populated beaches that sometimes are visited by wild horses who roam the coast. Rent a private home or stay in a hotel. Hix Island House, designed as well as owned by architect John Hix, is an intimate destination that offers guests a view of both coasts.

Culebra

Another lesser known sister island is Culebra, off Puerto Rico's east coast. Accessible only by ferry boat or plane, Culebra is not as commercialized as Puerto Rico. Because there are no chain hotels, guests stay primarily in bed and breakfast establishments or rent a private home. Culebra's Flamenco Beach was ranked the second best beach in the world by the Discovery Channel, and typically is not crowded.

Techniques For Making Beach Or Ocean Themed Cake Decorations

Capture the tranquility of a beach in your next cake.

Whether you are on an island or in the city, an ocean themed cake can make you feel like you're in the warm sun enjoying the soft sand of the beach. When creating a cake with an ocean or beach theme, it is important to make the pieces look as realistic as possible. Try referencing pictures of real seashells, beach balls, etc., while making your decorations for a more realistic look.

Sand

It can be difficult to make frosting resemble sand for a beach themed cake. Rather than trying to make your buttercream look like sand, coat the cake with a layer of buttercream and then use edible sand composed of brown sugar and crushed graham cracker. Use a food processor to finely grate graham cracker pieces and mix them with equal parts of brown sugar. Sprinkle the mixture over a freshly frosted cake so it will stick.

Seashells

Seashells can be difficult and time-consuming to sculpt out of fondant or gumpaste. To save time, you can make seashells by pressing them into chocolate candy molds using pre-made fondant. Knead your fondant until it is smooth and pliable. Press a small ball of fondant into a chocolate seashell candy mold. Turn the mold over and remove the fondant sea shell. After it has dried, dust it with gold, pink, blue and white luster dust to leave a shiny finish. Luster dust, or pearl dust, is an edible food powder available in craft stores that is applied to food products using a brush. Apply luster dust by using a small amount on the bristles of a craft brush and dusting it onto the surface of the food item.

Coral

Coral is a complex piece from the ocean that can be replicated for an ocean-themed cake. Rather than trying to sculpt a piece of coral by hand from gumpaste, you can create a piece of coral using leftover grape stems, royal icing and a little icing color. Royal icing is a stiff, white icing that can dry hard and is made from meringue powder, water and powdered sugar. Royal icing is not meant to be used for frosting cakes or cupcakes, due to the stiffness of the icing itself. Dye royal icing to the color you want. Use a piping bag to cover a piece of grape stem with a layer of royal icing, and allow it to dry. Repeat this process on the same stem until it is completely covered.

Ocean Water

The ocean moves and flows smoothly. Though you can use buttercream to create the appearance of the sea, it will not look as smooth or clear as real water. Instead, frost your cake with a thin layer of light green buttercream. Take clear piping gel and add in a few drops of blue. Apply the piping gel where you want water on your cake. Use an "S" pattern to create choppy ocean waves. With your cake spatula, pull the piping gel up quickly next to the seashore to create the look of waves crashing on the sand.

Party Centerpieces Ideas With Fish

Use colorful fish as table centerpiece inspiration.

When planning a beach-themed party or a birthday bash for a fisherman, create a handmade fishy centerpiece. If you object to using live fish as decor for ethical reasons, make charming centerpieces inspired by the real thing. Incorporate fishing accessories or tropical colors and plants into the design element for an authentic look. Does this Spark an idea?

Floating Fish Candles

Set a colorful and charming table using whimsical floating fish candles. Fill a large clear glass vessel or fish bowl with light blue-tinted water, and place a handful of vibrant rocks or stones on the bottom. Create a realistic aquarium look by including a few plastic plants in the design. Set tropical fish-inspired floating candles on top of the water so they can glide freely around the vessel. You can also use fish-shaped floating tea light holders filled with brightly hued candles.

Underwater Display

If you are hosting a birthday party for an avid fisherman, create a one-of-a-kind centerpiece that reflects his passion. Fill a long, shallow clear glass container with a mix of fresh greens and leaves, as well as a few stones, to resemble a lake or river bottom. Set realistic-looking fish ornaments or figurines among the greens, along with a few fishing bobbers. You can have a florist make the green arrangement for you, or design one using faux plants to save money. Set out fish bowls filled with gummy worms so guests can munch on sweet treats throughout the party.

Fishy Table

Set the stage for nautical decor by covering the dinner table with new fish netting. Create a fish-inspired garland using tissue paper and place it down the center of the table, under the netting. Design a simple centerpiece by filling a large glass fishbowl with an assortment of new or vintage fishing lures, or an interesting combination of both. Fill a tackle box with candies, cookies or other treats and set it next to the bowl; allow each guest to take a lure and edible goody home with him as a favor.

Where Is A Good Place To Throw A Party

Hosting a party can be a lot of work, but the result is usually a lot of fun. One of the first considerations is where to have it. The party venue has to have enough room for all the guests, have fun things to do, and not detract from the overall mood of the party. No matter where you live, there are plenty of options for places to have a party of any size. Does this Spark an idea?

Your House

Having a party at your house is the simplest option, although it will be a lot of work for you as host or hostess. You can control everything at your home. If you don't want to be preoccupied with cooking, cleaning and serving during your party, consider hiring a catering company or waitstaff to help out.

A Restaurant or Bar

If you'd rather not do any work during the party or worry about something in your house getting ruined, a restaurant or bar--depending on the age of the guests--is a good place to have a party. If the party is small enough to fit at a table, just call ahead of time, explain your situation and make a reservation. If the party is bigger, you may want to make a reserve a room or section of the restaurant or bar a month or two in advance.

If you'll have a lot of guests, you can pick a few items from the restaurant's regular menu to create a party menu for guests to choose from. Some restaurants will also allow you to bring your own cake in, if you're celebrating a special occasion, no matter how big the party is. Just check ahead of time.

A Park

When the weather allows, parks are great places to host large parties. There's lots of open space and playgrounds and usually soccer, baseball and basketball courts for guests to play on. Most parks also rent pavilions with picnic tables, grills and sometimes kitchens for a small fee.

Other Places

If you want to go somewhere with lots of activity, have a party at an amusement park, a bowling alley, a movie theater, a theme restaurant, or any other activity center. Many of these places will have special party rooms for you to use, or you can begin the party at your house, go to your destination, and leave from there or end the party at your house, too. Call ahead to check if there are discount rates or special party packages, and make sure the chosen destination is age-appropriate. If you're going somewhere like a big amusement park with a large group of children, also make sure there are enough adults to keep an eye on everyone.

What Happens When A Person Dies Before Paying Off A House

When a person dies with an unpaid mortgage loan, his estate is responsible for handling the disposition of the property, including the mortgage note. Depending on the wording in a person's will, his spouse or other beneficiary may also be responsible for paying off the house. The mortgage debt is likely due and payable soon after the borrower dies.

Mortgage

A mortgage is an installment loan that is secured by the value of a home. When a person dies before paying off a house, the mortgage debt may pass to his estate, spouse, beneficiaries or any co-borrower on the loan. Clauses within the mortgage note as well as the terminology of a person's will dictates what happens to the mortgage loan after the borrower dies.

Default

Most mortgage loans contain a clause stipulating that any ownership transfer is a condition of default. In most cases, default accelerates the loan, making it payable in full on demand. When a person dies, ownership of the property is transferred in accordance with state laws and with the person's will. If the mortgage loan goes into default, the estate, co-borrower or beneficiary must pay the mortgage loan through selling the home or through refinancing.

Will Terminology

If a person dies before paying off a house, the terms of her will can dictate the ownership of the home, which equates to the responsibility of the mortgage debt. If the deceased bequeaths the house with a mortgage to a beneficiary subject to the mortgage, the beneficiary must pay off the mortgage debt. If the house is bequeathed as not subject to the mortgage, the estate pays off the mortgage debt before transferring the title to the house to the beneficiary.

Mortgage Life Insurance

Homeowners can elect to purchase a mortgage life insurance policy to pay off the mortgage debt in case of death, disease or disability. Mortgage life insurers are often associated with the mortgage lender. Proceeds from other types of life insurance with designated beneficiaries may also be used to pay off the mortgage loan at the time of death. A life insurance policy designated specifically for paying off the mortgage may not be as beneficial to the beneficiaries of a person's estate as one that is not limited with regard to usage.

Luau Ideas For Kids

Grab some leis and get kids outside for a luau-themed party.

A luau is an ideal party theme for kids. They'll love the music, dancing and foods inspired by the great state of Hawaii and its traditional party theme. A luau isn't just for birthdays--you can host one at anytime for any occasion, but summer is an optimal time to have a backyard luau and get kids outdoors for a few tropical activities. Does this Spark an idea?

Invitations

Make luau-themed invitations with blank postcards. Decorate one side of each postcard with a tropical theme using stickers, foam cutouts and markers. Write your invitation message on the other side, and use wording like, "Having a great time at our luau, wish you were here." Write the party details as well. Another idea is to attach the invitations to leis and hand-deliver them to guests.

Decorations

Go all out decorating for your luau. Use torches, lots of flowers made of paper or garlands, tiki head decorations and colorful balloons and streamers. Pinatas in the shape of pineapples or parrots will add a tropical touch to the party. Put on some Hawaiian music in the background, and place ukuleles around the party area so that kids can play with them.

Activities

Gather kids in a circle for a game of "Pass the Coconut," which is played like "Hot Potato" but with a coconut instead. Have hula dancing and limbo stick contests, and set up a craft area where kids can pour colored sand into clear bottles to make a luau party souvenir. You can also have kids dig through a sandbox filled with small seashells using buckets and shovels.

Food and Drinks

Tropical-themed food and drinks will complement your luau nicely. Mix up some fruit-flavored smoothies and serve snow cones and lots of mixed fruit on skewers or in slices so that they can be easily eaten by kids.Teriyaki chicken with pineapple is also a snack kids will eat up when cubed and placed on skewers.

What Kind Of Food For A Hawaiian Themed Dinner

There are numerous options when it comes to selecting food with a Hawaiian theme.

Whether you're planning a backyard barbecue blowout or a casual dinner party, the addition of a Hawaiian theme can make the occasion even more memorable. There are a variety of different Hawaiian foods you can prepare, of varying degrees of difficulty, when putting together your very own Hawaiian-style luau. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Main Course

One of the most popular dishes at a luau is the roasted Kalua pork. If you're planning a backyard barbecue for a lot of guests, you can rent or buy a large pig roaster and cook an entire pig, Hawaiian-style. If you're looking for something a bit less ambitious, you can make your own kalua pork from a pork butt, either roasted in the oven or in a slow cooker. Other main-course ideas include laulau (a combination of pork, chicken and fish wrapped up in special luau leaves), Huli Huli chicken, Macadamia-crusted coconut shrimp and Ono ribs.

Side Dish

A staple of any Hawaiian luau is poi, a thick paste made from the mashed taro root. Understandably, authentic poi is not easy to find outside of Hawaii, although a few companies produce a dehydrated product that turns into poi when water is added. An easier alternative is potato-mac salad, a combination of macaroni salad and potato salad. Other ideas for side dishes include chicken long rice, sesame cabbage salad or even a traditional vinaigrette salad with the addition of Macadmia nuts and tropical fruit to add a Hawaiian flavor.

Beverages

No cocktail is more identified with Hawaii than the Mai Tai, and any bartending guide should have a simple recipe. Another suggestion is Volcanic Punch, an easy-to make combination of fruit punch, pineapple juice, coconut milk and ginger ale. Vodka can be added for an extra kick. Other tropical cocktails such as rum punch and pina coladas will also work. For non-alcoholic alternatives, tropical fruit smoothies are an appropriate option, especially if they include fresh fruits such as pineapple, mango and guava.

Dessert

Whether you want to keep things simple or go all out, there are numerous ideas for Hawaiian-themed desserts. On the easier side, simply cut a whole, fresh pineapple so it serves as a serving bowl for a fresh fruit salad, sprinkled with toasted coconut. Add a dipping bowl of flavored yogurt for an extra treat. A traditional idea is Haupia, a Hawaiian coconut pudding, or perhaps even a homemade coconut cream pie. Children will enjoy making a cookie lei; use packaged butter cookies with holes in the center and decorate them with colorful frosting. Thread the frosted cookies on a necklace made of shoestring licorice for an edible version of the traditional Hawaiian lei.

Retirement Party Decorating Ideas

When planning a retirement party, use decorations based on the personal interests of the retiree. Wendy Moyle of ShindigZ Party Supplies also cautions that many retirees "may approach this time with mixed emotion". Therefore, "All retirement celebrations should be as upbeat as possible, and should honor the life of the retiree."

Beach Party

When the retiree is planning to celebrate retirement with a vacation to a beach location such as Hawaii or the Bahamas, use related ideas for decorating. Use simple beach-themed elements or throw a lavish luau.

Beach towels make great reusable tablecloths. Use seashell-shaped plates or coconuts as cups. Pour sand into glass vases or candle holders to provide the suggestion of the beach without the messy cleanup of loose sand. Rolls of shimmering blue gift wrapping cellophane stretched along the wall provide the illusion of the sea. Stick decals of fish and sea life along the length of the cellophane.

International Travel

When globe-trotting fever calls the retiree, gather travel posters and small souvenirs depicting various world locations. Decorate the cake as a well-traveled suitcase covered with destination stickers. Vintage sticker reprints are available on CD-ROM from specialty book suppliers. Print the stickers from a desktop printer using edible ink available from online cake suppliers.

Decorate each table according to a specific international locale such as Paris, the Pyramids, Tokyo and Moscow. Search online to find small international flags to use as centerpieces along with other elements to set the mood.

Road Trip

The desire of many retirees is to hit the open road by convertible, RV or motorcycle as an expression of their well-earned freedom. Gather Route 66 signs to set the theme, as this historic highway captures the romance of the road. Decorate disposable tablecloths with painted-on sections of road, then add toy or model vehicles as a part of the centerpiece. Print mini-highway signs with a desktop printer. Cut a small slit at the top and bottom of each mini-sign so each one will slide over a straw as decoration for drinks and glasses on the table.

The Los Angeles Public Library maintains an online collection of old menu images. Search for roadside diner menus from the 1950s and 1960s and print them off on a desktop printer to use as place mats. Use the menu items as ideas to create the actual menu for the retirement party.

Suggestions For Dressing Up Hawaiian

A traditional Hawaiian look includes a lei and a muumuu.

Hawaiian clothing has a very distinct look -- it's bright and colorful. The look now reflects the vibrant plant life found on the island, but traditional Hawaiian clothing used to have more earth tones as it was made from kapa, a bark cloth. The garments are typically loose and flowing to allow for comfort in the tropical climate. When searching for Hawaiian clothes, keep bright and casual in mind. Does this Spark an idea?

The Muumuu

The muumuu is a wide, casual dress that's easy to wear. It has a loose fit -- there is no fitted waist or bust. This modest garment was designed for Hawaiian women by missionaries that had settled on the islands. The fabric is usually cotton or silk and the prints are bold and colorful.

The Lei

Many leis are primarily made of fresh, bright flowers.

A necklace of fresh flowers strung together, the lei has become a symbol for the warmth and hospitality of the Hawaiian people -- its history is rooted in its use as a peace symbol between chiefs in conflict. Some leis are more elaborate than others and can contain feathers, shells, leaves and even bones from animals.

Hula Skirt or Pa'u

"Pa'u," a billowing, wrapped skirt for women, was first fashioned from kapa, a cloth made from bark. This type of skirt was also fashioned from dried grass or leaves and was traditionally green or brown -- this type of skirt is what most people associate with the hula dance. Hula skirts are now made with other materials such as raffia and cellophane and come in many different colors.

Hawaiian Aloha Shirt

Hawaiian giftshops always have Hawaiian shirts for tourists to purchase.

Hawaiian shirts are large, loose-fitting button-up shirts that sport bold designs such as colorful flowers, bright pineapples or the iconic hula maiden. The first Hawaiian shirt patterns were based on kapa, a pounded bark that was used for clothing. Kapa had simple shapes and stripes dyed on it and natural earth tones. Hawaiian shirts from the 40s and 50s had coconut buttons and are now called "silkies" -- these shirts are highly collectible.

What Happens To Debt When A Person Dies

What Happens to Debt When a Person Dies?

If There Are No Assets

If a person dies and he has no money and no assets, then the debts are canceled out. The family will not inherit the debt. The deceased family member must have no money in a bank account, stocks, bonds or CDs. He must also not own any property or large items, such as a car that can be sold to pay for the debt.

Community Property States

In some cases, a husband or wife can be held liable for the debts of their spouse. This happens in community property states. Only debts that have occurred during the marriage are held against the spouse. The community property states are Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin.

If There Are Assets

If the deceased family member had assets, they must be used to pay off any debts before any money is distributed to family members. That means if there is not enough cash to pay off the debt, property must be sold. Mortgages and car payments must be paid off first. After that debts, such as credit card bills and student loans are paid. If there are any other debts, they are paid last. Once all the debts are satisfied, the family will inherit any left over money. If the money runs out paying off the debts, then the family receives nothing.

Joint Accounts

If the deceased family member had any accounts with another family member, then that family member is responsible for the whole debt. This happens when a parent or grandparent co-signs for a student or car loan. Say a college age student dies suddenly, then the parent who co-signed the student loan would be responsible to pay off the entire student loan.

Leaving Property

If a house or a car is bequeathed to a family member, then the family member has two options. He can either sell the house or car and pay off the loans, or he can take over the house and car and continue making the monthly payments himself. This is only if all other debts are paid, or if there aren't any other debts.

Simple Kids Cake Decorating Ideas

A simple birthday cake can be embellished any way you like.

Cake decorating can be a daunting task for a parent who has never picked up a piping bag. There are many options available, however, for decorating your child's birthday cake that do not require professional techniques. With creativity, colored icing and accessories, you can transform an ordinary sheet cake, either made by you or bought in a bakery, into a personalized creation for your child's birthday. Does this Spark an idea?

Decorating With Candy

For the most basic birthday cake decorations, use your child's favorite candy. Ice a cake of any shape or size with either a color of icing that coordinates with the candy or with your child's favorite color. Arrange the candy on the cake around the bottom and top edge for a border. You can make shapes like hearts or stars with the candy or just fill in every open space. For this decorating project, smaller soft candies will work best.

Princess Cake

For a beautiful three-dimensional princess cake, you will need a cake doll and icing tubes, purchased from a craft store. Bake a cake in a 2 1/2 qt. glass bowl. Flip the cake onto the flat side to cool. The cake will be the dress of the princess; use pink or purple icing to cover the dome. Embellishments for the dress may be drawn on with icing tubes. After the dress has been iced and decorated, insert the cake doll into the center of the dome to finish the princess cake.

Sports Ball Cake

A sports-themed birthday cake can be catered to your child's favorite sport. You can make a round sports ball using a 2 1/2 qt. glass bowl as the cake pan. Determine the ball you wish to create, then bake a cake in a glass bowl. While the cake cools on the flat side, tint the icing to the correct color for the ball. Ice the cake, and then apply embellishments. Red licorice may be used for the lines on a baseball, while black licorice strings can be used for a basketball.

Construction Site Cake

A construction site can be created easily on a sheet cake or a large round cake. Use chocolate icing on the cake for a dirt color. To add texture, consider crushed chocolate cookies or graham crackers sprinkled liberally over the surface. Create a large dirt pile using chocolate chips or cookie crumbs. Toy dump trucks, bulldozers and cranes can be strategically placed around the construction site.

Tropical Preschool Lesson Ideas

Introduce preschool children to a tropical environment.

Every day is a new exploration opportunity for preschool children. Let your preschoolers explore and discover beyond the boundaries of the classroom with tropical-themed activities. Provide opportunities for the children to navigate a tropical rainforest with chattering monkeys, participate in a luau and help to create a tropical fruit snack. Combine tropical activities with imagination for preschool learning fun.

Tropical Rainforest Game

Make a tropical rainforest obstacle course outdoors. Suspend a hula hoop from a rope. Cover the hula hoop with branches and let the children climb through it. Place additional branches in the outside play area for the children to climb over and under. Hang a rope from the end of the monkey bars where the children can pretend that they are climbing a vine. Remind your rainforest explorers to make monkey sounds as they climb across the monkey bars.

Luau Activities

Provide hula skirts and leis for the children to wear. Another option is to let the children make their own leis. Provide yarn and brightly colored tissue paper squares. Use a hole puncher to place holes in the tissue squares. Demonstrate thread the tissue squares on the yarn. Place a paper coconut tree on a wall and let the children play "pin the coconut on the tree." Show the children play sea animal limbo. Children approach and go under the limbo stick by slithering like an eel, walking sideways like a crab or wiggling like a jellyfish.

Tropical Snacks

Offer the children a variety of tropical foods. Include bananas, coconut, papaya, mangoes and chocolate. Graph the children's taste preferences. Let the children help you prepare chocolate-covered bananas. Halve the bananas and show the children insert a wooden popsicle stick into the bananas. Place a package of chocolate dip mix into a container of hot water until the chocolate melts. Pour the melted chocolate into a cup. Let the children dip and swirl a banana into the chocolate. Place the dipped bananas on a wax paper-lined tray and freeze.

Vines, Flowers And Sloths For A Rainforest Wall

Make vines from brown paper grocery bags. Fold each bag into thirds and cut the bags into one-and-a-half-inch strips. Twist the strips using both hands. Staple two or more strips together to make the vines the desired length. Let the children make tropical flowers and large leaves from construction paper. Make copies of a sloth coloring page for each child. Ask the children to color and cut out the sloths. Hang the sloths from the brown grocery bag vines.

Party Invitation Wording Ideas

Choose from different types of wording to make your party invitation memorable.

An invitation is crucial for spreading the word about your upcoming party. Whether you're hosting a child's birthday party, graduation, baby shower, wedding shower, retirement party or a holiday party, getting the wording just right will let the guests know what to expect at the party and what the mood and activities are likely to be.

Always include the event, the person being honored, the date, the time, the location, the host (if different) and the RSVP information. Beyond those basics, there are plenty of ways to vary the wording on the invitation to give guests a taste of what is to come.

Themed Wording

If the party has a strong theme, you can make a real impact by writing the invitation to reflect it. For example, a birthday party with a pirate theme might incorporate pirate talk, such as "Ahoy, matey! Come celebrate with Captain Will on June 22nd." Another example might be a child's garden tea party using phrases like, "It would be Tea-lightful if you would join us on June 22nd for a Garden Party."

Holiday parties offer the perfect opportunity to incorporate the theme into wording on the invitation. For example, a Halloween party invitation might read, "All ghosts and goblins are invited to this Haunted House on October 22nd for a monstrously good time."

Formal Wording

Usually reserved for extremely formal parties, such as a wedding reception or a black-tie event, formal invitation wording follows strict rules. While the invitation still delivers the critical information about time and place, the approach to write that information differs.

For example, in formal party invitations, time is spelled out ("four o'clock in the afternoon," not "4:00 p.m."); dates are spelled out ("Tuesday, the twenty-second of June"); and the names of the host and guests are always in third person ("Mr. and Mrs. John Smith invite..." instead of "We invite..."). There are also punctuation rules for formal invitations, such as capitalizing the first letter of every line.

Verse Wording

You don't have to be a poet to include the invitation information in a clever verse. For example, a graduation invitation could read, "Every yesterday is a memory of dreams./ Every tomorrow is a vision of hope./ With great joy and pride/ (parent's names) announce the graduation/ of their (son/daughter, graduate's name) from (school/college/university name)/ on (date) at (time, location)."

A baby shower or bridal shower invitation is another place where a verse can be used in an invitation. For example, a baby shower invitation for twins might read, "Double the diapers/ and double the toys./ Let's help (parents' names)/ prepare for twin boys./ It's a baby shower (date, time, location)."
