USS Arizona Memorial

Each year, nearly 1.5 million people visit the memorial to the USS Arizona, the battleship that sunk and entombed over 1,000 military personnel during the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. The memorial, which is above the sunken battleship, is part of the World War II Valor in the Pacific national monument. Tickets to the memorial are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. The visitor center also has exhibits about the attack and sells tickets to the USS Oklahoma and the Battleship Missouri Memorials, the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park and the Pacific Aviation Museum.

Diamond Head State Monument

Diamond Head, a volcanic crater on the southeast coast of Oahu overlooking Waikiki Beach, attracts 600,000 visitors a year. The crater was formed about 300,000 years ago from a single volcanic eruption. Diamond Head used to be part of Oahu's coastal defense system, but now visitors can hike to the top of the crater and enjoy panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Waikiki. The trail to the summit is mostly paved, although some portions of the trail have steep staircases. The hike covers 0.8 miles one way and Hawaii State Parks estimates the hike takes between 90 minutes and two hours to complete.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a 300,000-acre park on the island of Hawaii. The only national park with a tropical rain forest, it also features Mauna Loa, the world's largest volcano, and Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes. Visitors can hike over 150 miles of trails, including trails on Mauna Loa, as well as camp and backpack. Those who prefer to drive through the park can follow Crater Rim Drive along the caldera, or large crater, of Kilauea. The road leads to many scenic points including the Thurston Lava Tube, which allows visitors to walk through a cave-like tube that was formed by flowing lava hundreds of years ago. Chain of Craters Road is 20 miles long and gives visitors access to both dormant and active lava flows, as well as views of the rain forest, the mountains and the seacoast. The road also leads to the Thomas A. Jaggar Museum, a museum about volcanoes. The park is open daily 24 hours a day, although some parts of the park are subject to closure.

Lahaina Historic District

The Lahaina Historic District is on the island of Maui and is designated a National Historic Landmark. The historic district commemorates the work of the protestant missionaries in the early 1800s and the city of Lahaina's history as a whaling seaport. Visitors can walk or rent an electric car to see 31 historic sites such as the Old Lahaina Lighthouse, built in 1840 to aide the whalers; Seamen's Hospital, which cared for injured and ill seamen abandoned by their crews in Hawaii; and Hale Pai, the site of a print shop built by missionaries in 1831, bringing the first written words to Hawaii. Turtle Town

There is not an exact location to pin point Turtle Town on a map. Turtle Town refers to a general area off the west shores that is home to sea turtles. Keep in mind that the Hawaiian green sea turtles are an endangered species and are protected by law. According to the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service, you are required to stay a reasonable distance from the green sea turtle in its natural habitat and are not allowed to touch or feed them.

Maui to Lanai Snorkel

Lanai is a neighboring island about nine miles from West Maui and is known for spinning dolphins and clear blue waters. Tour operators such as the Lanai Explorer take passengers from Maui to Lanai for snorkeling. Fractures

For this experiment you will need a slice of cheese. As simple as that sounds, this experiment examines the properties of fractures in a surface. Using a butter knife, make a small slice in the middle of the cheese. Pull on either side of the piece of cheese and watch how the fracture changes and grows. Now make two slices, an inch apart, and offset diagonally from each other. Pull the cheese again. Watch how the fractures interact with each other.

Triboluminescence

Triboluminescence sounds complicated, but there's an easy way to see it in action. You'll need a wintergreen Life Saver. No other flavor works as well as wintergreen. Turn off all the lights and stand in front of a mirror. Wait for your eyes to adapt to the dark, and then place the Life Saver in your mouth. Start chewing, but make sure you can still see the Life Saver. You should see tiny sparks of light. That's triboluminescence at work.

Edible Batteries

This experiment requires a little bit of preparation in gathering materials. You'll need a potato or a lemon. You might also want to try the experiment on different fruits to compare effectiveness. As well as your fruit or vegetable, you'll need a zinc electrode, a copper electrode and copper wire. You can find these materials in your local hardware store. Most important, you'll need a small light bulb. Place the electrodes on opposite sides of your potato.Then connect the light bulb to the wire, which should connect to the electrodes. Observe the light.

Edible Volcano

Bake cookie dough for around 12 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. You may want to coat your pan with tin foil and lightly grease it. After it has cooked, sculpt it into a volcano shape. Use white icing for glue. This is your inner layer. After the inner layer, bake more cookie dough. Sculpt this over the previous layer. Crumble a dark cookie such as an Oreo to represent dirt on the volcano. If desired, you can use pudding for lava.

Materials To Make A Tablecloth

Tablecloths are easy to make and can be created in less time than it takes to pick out material. Take advantage of their easy construction and make a tablecloth for every occasion, every season and every mood. Once you have the measurements, try piecing scraps of cloth together or using material you wouldn't normally use for a tablecloth like leather or silk for embellishment.

Pre-Sewing

Use a yardstick, measuring tape or folding metal ruler to measure the length, width and drop of the table to determine how much fabric to buy. Buy the correct amount of fabric. Pre-wash the fabric, if the material can be laundered. Use an iron to press the fabric before cutting. Use scissors to cut the fabric to the amount required for the tablecloth, adding a half-inch on all sides for the seam allowance. Use pins to secure the seam allowance before sewing.

Sewing

Change the needle in the sewing machine before sewing. Thread the sewing machine with thread that matches the material, according to the sewing machine's instructions. Begin sewing the seam edges, removing the pins as the seams are stitched. Use the scissors to cut the threads at the end of the seams. Use an iron to press the seams flat.

Extras

Add an extra finish to the edges by sewing on bias binding, lace, ribbon or braiding. Line the tablecloth for added weight and quilt both layers. Add a ruffle to the edge by cutting an extra strip of cloth and adding gathering stitches 1/4 and 1/2 inch from the edge. Pull the threads to pucker the fabric.

What Happens To A Loan If The Loanee Dies

Debts don't follow consumers beyond the grave, but they rarely vanish when the borrower dies. One of the business risks lenders face is that a borrower may die before he repays his debt. For lenders, this is an acceptable risk - especially when you consider that lenders can often collect the deceased's unpaid loan balance through his estate or through the loved ones he left behind.

Secured Loans

Secured loans are less risky for lenders because they require you to put up collateral to "secure" the debt. A lender can seize your collateral if you do not make payments on the debt as agreed. Examples of secured loans include mortgages and auto loans. If you do not pay your mortgage or car payment, the lender can foreclose on your home and repossess your car. If you die before paying off your secured loan, your family can keep the collateral that secures the loan only if it takes over the payments. If nobody makes the payments, the lender will seize the asset.

Unsecured Loans

Unlike secured loans, unsecured loans lack collateral. If you default on an unsecured loan, the lender cannot seize your assets in lieu of payment, but it can file a lawsuit against you. While lenders cannot sue deceased borrowers, they can file a payment claim with the probate court handling the individual's estate. The probate court then uses funds from the borrower's estate to pay off the remaining loan balance.

Although most loans you owe will survive your death, the National Consumer Law Center notes that your federal student loans will not. Upon your death, your family must submit a certified copy of your death certificate to the loan holder. The U.S. Department of Education will then erase your remaining loan balance. Your family does not have to pay it and neither does your estate.

Joint Loans

If your loan was a joint loan, or a loved one cosigned with you for the loan, responsibility for payment transfers to the joint account holder or cosigner upon your death. When you hold a joint account with another consumer, both of you are fully responsible for the debt - giving the lender the right to collect payment from either of you. Thus, if one account holder dies, the lender has the right to sue the surviving account holder for the debt. The same is true of cosigners. By cosigning, an individual pledges that he will pay off the debt if the borrower cannot. Should the borrower die, the cosigner remains responsible for repayment and the lender will collect the payment from him rather than from the deceased's estate.

Family Liability

Unless your loan was a jointly held account or you had a cosigner, it's unlikely that anyone other than you is responsible for paying off the loan. Your lender will try to convince your family otherwise. According to a 2009 New York Times Report, collection agencies often try to convince consumers to pay off their deceased loved ones' debts - even if they aren't legally obligated to do so.

Pirate crafts are fun to make and play with.

Pirates, with their dramatic flags, swashbuckling attitude and colorful costumes, have long been an inspiration for creative projects. Whether your idea of a pirate is "Treasure Island"'s Long John Silver or Captain Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean," you can easily make pirate crafts for a project or party or just for your own entertainment.

Pirate Flag

Every self-respecting pirate captain needs his own flag. Cut out pirate-themed shapes from white material or card stock. Skulls, bones, swords and hour-glasses are popular pirate motifs. Glue the cut-outs onto a piece of black cardboard or fabric with craft glue. Use masking tape to secure your flag to a long gardening stick so you can display or carry it where you want.

Eye-patch

An eye-patch was a favorite and often necessary accessory for battle-loving pirates. Make your own from a piece of black card stock. Draw a large "D" shape on the card stock and cut around it. Lay it flat with the curve of the "D" at the bottom. Use a white marker pen (or corrector fluid pen) to draw a small skull and cross bones outline in the center of your patch. Punch a hole on each side of the card and thread through a length of elastic, long enough to fit over your head. Knot each end at the holes and your patch is ready to wear.

Parrot

Every pirate needs a parrot friend. Create a simple parrot from an old toilet-roll tube. Paint the tube in parrot colors such as red, green, yellow or blue. Cut out two ovals from card stock and glue them on either side as wings. To make a beak, cut a triangle of orange card stock. Make a narrow fold along one edge to create a flap and glue the flap toward the top of the roll (the head of the parrot). Stick on two self-adhesive googly eyes. Glue on a few colored feathers (available from craft shops) around the top of the roll to create the parrot's crest.

Treasure Map

Treasure maps suffer through time, buried in the ground and fought over by rival pirates. To create a torn, yellow-aged map, first draw an island on a piece of white paper. Use crayons to add features such rivers, caves, trees and a large "X" with the words "here be treasure" underneath (you will add liquid to the map later so the color must not be water soluble or it will run). To age your map, dip a sponge in cold coffee, dribble it over the paper and then sponge it over. While the paper is still wet, tear off the corners and a rough border around the edge.

Hibiscus blooms from spring through early summer. Another popular flower from Hawaii is the Plumeria, also known as the Hawaiian Lei Flower. The regular Plumeria plant grows up to 10 feet, produces flowers of many colors such as white, yellow, pink and very fragrant. Plumeria plants do well in full sun and well-drained soil. They bloom in a very short period of time.

Fruits

The breadfruit tree can grow up to 90 feet. It has large green leaves and produces fruit throughout the year. The breadfruit has a very starchy meat and can be eaten either boiled or uncooked. It was spread by early Polynesians into Hawaii. The Macadamia nut tree can grow up to 40 feet. It produces hard-shelled nuts and does well in full sun. The Macadamia tree was brought to Hawaii from Australia. Hawaii is known for large, commercial production of pineapples. The pineapple plant can grow up to 5 feet tall, with long and spiky leaves and produces fruits in about nine months.

Trees

Hapuu is the common name for the Hawaiian tree fern that grows up to 20 feet tall. It is mostly found in rainforests in the Big Island. The Hapuu is very slow growing. It needs well-drained soil, regular watering and partial shade. The Hapuu is popularly used in landscaping.
