The Best Wii Games For Seniors

Only 24 percent of Americans over the age of 50 regularly play video games, according to 2007 data from the Entertainment Software Association. Still, that number represents a sizeable increase from the nine percent reported in 1999. While senior citizens are certainly free to play any games they wish, including hardcore titles like Gears of War and Grand Theft Auto, it may be easiest to start with the Nintendo Wii and its intuitive controls. The Nintendo Wii has seen success in assisted living homes, where it encourages seniors to be more active.

Wii Sports Resort

When the Nintendo Wii first began arriving in the common rooms of senior centers and assisted living facilities, Wii Sports drew media attention for its ability to get seniors up and moving with games like golf, bowling and tennis. Wii Sports Resort is a worthy sequel and offers 12 different mini-games. The included peripheral, Wii MotionPlus, improves the Wii remote's tracking abilities and accelerometer for a more realistic gaming experience. Swordplay, basketball and cycling encourage players to get up and moving. Games like archery and Frisbee require excellent concentration and hand-eye coordination.

Wii Fit Plus

Wii Fit Plus is the sequel to popular fitness title Wii Fit. Wii Fit Plus is primarily a fitness title, and its bundled peripheral, the Wii Balance Board, is the centerpiece of most of its mini-games. The Balance Board measures weight and balance. While the weight aspect mainly plays into your daily "body test" so you can keep track of your weight over a period of time, the balance feature is key to most of the mini-games. In the soccer game, for example, you have to stand on the balance board and lean to the left and right to make your on-screen Mii block incoming balls and dodge projectiles. Strength and yoga exercises test your ability to keep a steady center of balance as you do push-ups, crunches and various yoga positions.

Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree

Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree claims to keep the mind sharp and focused just like way crossword puzzles, Sudoku, reading and any other intellectual simulation. It features a range of mini-games that test the player's abilities in categories such as math, language and logic. You can take tests daily to get an intelligence score, play the mini-games freely or compete in multiplayer mode. Multiplayer lets you choose from simultaneous two-player games or eight-player games where you go one-at-a-time and pass the Wii remote around.

Traditional Hawaiian Crafts

Hawaii has a rich tradition of crafting.

Hawaii has a rich history of crafting, including making leis, featherworking, creating kapa cloth and frond weaving. Many traditional Hawaiian crafts are influenced by Polynesian and Tahitian culture, but Hawaiian crafters have developed their own distinctive style over time. Although some traditional Hawaiian crafts are not as common as they once were, many crafters pursue them out of a desire to keep tradition alive.

Leis

Leis are created by threading flowers or shells to create anklets, bracelets or necklaces. Traditionally, leis were given as a sign of affection, respect or hospitality. In modern times, leis are commonly given to travelers to welcome them to Hawaii. Flowers commonly used to create leis are the plumeria, lehua, ilima, lokelani and kukui. In some cases, vines, moss, seeds and nuts are also used to create leis.

Featherwork

Featherworking is the traditional Hawaiian art of creating capes, hats, leis and other ornaments out of feathers. Historically, garments and adornments created through featherworking were worn only by nobility and were seen as a mark of status. Feathered objects were also considered to contain spiritual power. Although featherworking is not as popular as it once was, it is still possible to find feather leis and hair ornaments.

Kapa

Kapa is a traditional cloth created from mulberry bark pulp. The bark is harvested after the tree reaches about 1 inch in diameter, pounded to form a pulp, dried, soaked and pounded further. The resulting cloth is then dyed or embossed using pounding tools carved into a variety of designs. Kapa can be used to create functional objects, such as bed spreads, or purely decorative objects, such as tapestries and wall hangings.

Quilts

Although kapa is Hawaii's traditional cloth, the introduction of new cloth and techniques by explorers and missionaries led to new crafting methods, such as the creation of quilts. Hawaiian quilts are traditionally created from one piece of material, with additional cloth sewn onto the main piece to create bold and colorful designs. In modern times, Hawaiian quilts are considered to be pieces of artwork rather than simply functional blankets and are often displayed as tapestries or wall hangings.

Lauhala Frond Weaving

Lauhala frond weaving is the art of weaving fronds from the hala tree into artful objects. Frond weaving is used to create baskets, placemats, fans, bracelets, headbands and hats. The fronds from the male hala tree were traditionally the most prized for use in lauhala frond weaving because of their durability, scarcity and pleasing texture; objects woven out of fronds from the male hala tree were often reserved for nobility.

Unique Ways To Seal Wedding Invitations

Use a customized stamp to seal your invitations.

Imagine opening your mailbox to find a weathered-looking, thick envelope with a strange burgundy seal covering the back flap. A letter such as this would get your attention right away. As you glide your fingers over the raised wax imprint, you'd pause to admire the beauty and uniqueness of the envelope before opening it. If you are getting married and you want your guests to think of your wedding as a unique, meaningful and personal experience from the start, try sealing your invitations in an uncommon way.

Wax

Wax seals can provide a vintage touch to wedding invitations. They can be affordable and are customizable, which makes them an intriguing option for many couples. Start by creating a design by hand or on your computer. Your design may include the intitial of bride and groom, or a motif that will be prominent in your ceremony or reception. Take this design to a custom stamper who will fashion a stamp that you can press into melted wax to create an original seal over your wedding invitation envelopes.

Stickers

Another way to seal a card is with a custom-designed sticker. Similar to the wax sealing method, start by creating a design. Use a graphic software or even word processing software program to size and reproduce the design in rows on an 8.5-inch by 11-inch page format. Then, print the designs onto a page of sticker paper. Business supply or art supply stores stock the sheets in colors, clear or foil. This method is extremely cost effective and yet still provides individuality and style.

Ribbon

Choose a style of ribbon, string or threaded cord in a favorite color, or color you plan to use at your wedding. After choosing the outer envelope size, select a color of envelope that complements your ribbon and measure the amount of ribbon needed to wrap each envelope. Think of sealing your envelope with ribbon as though you were wrapping a present and tie a pleasing bow. Place the entire package inside of an appropriately-sized manilla envelope for mailing.

Organic Material

Another creative option is to use natural materials to seal your invitations. Dried seaweed may complement an ocean theme; withered pumpkin vine may enhance a fall wedding theme; or, dried grape vine may be the perfect preamble to a Tuscan-style vineyard wedding. Choose a material that can be easily supplied. Experiment with different materials and tying methods until you accomplish the look you want.

Summer Daycare Party Ideas

Kiddy pools provide entertainment for many different summer party themes.

Summer daycare can be difficult for children because they have to go to a school-like atmosphere while their friends get to play all day. Throwing special daycare parties helps break up the monotony of day-to-day life and provides children with exciting experiences. Regardless of the party theme, basic decorations and entertainment are necessary items. However, since most daycare children bring their own lunches, you only need to provide light refreshments. Does this Spark an idea?

Beach Party

Bring an ocean atmosphere to your daycare with a summer beach party. An invitation informing parents about the party date and required equipment, such as a bathing suit and towel, is vital to ensure every child can participate in the fun. Decorations can include sun-shaped paper garlands, seashell wall hangings, beach towel tablecloths and fish-themed paper dishware. Refreshments for the daycare beach party can include lemonade, fruit juice, sliced watermelon, fruit Popsicles, ice cream sandwiches and fish-shaped cheddar crackers.

Entertainment items can include water-filled kiddy pools, beach balls, sandcastle-building tools and water balloons. Games can include a seashell scavenger hunt, beach ball volleyball, water balloon wars and a crab-walk race. Craft activities can include sand art pictures, where each child sprinkles sand across glue lines on paper, and beach bottles, where each child fills a plastic bottle with sand and seashells.

Carnival Party

Gather some parent volunteers and throw a carnival-themed party to give daycare children the biggest thrill of their summer. Decorations can include colorful streamers and balloons on the walls, plastic flag garlands around each booth and clown-patterned paper dishware. Refreshments can include snow cones, popcorn, cotton candy, roasted peanuts, candy apples, fruit punch, lemonade and pink lemonade.

Entertainment booths for the carnival-themed daycare party can include beanbag toss, ring toss, ball toss, bottle knockdown, duck pond, prize fishing wall, Velcro dart throw, face painting and fortune telling. Carnival game prizes can include bouncy balls, silly putty, friendship bracelets, clown stickers, yo-yos, candy apple lollipops, foam hats and small stuffed animals.

Luau Party

Turn a plain playground into a tropical paradise for a luau-themed daycare party. Decorations can include inflatable palm trees, paper flower garlands, coconut wall hangings, unlit tiki torches and parrot-patterned paper dishware. Costumes can include paper flower leis and grass skirts for each child to help get them in the party mood. Refreshments can include pineapple spears, coconut cupcakes, fruit gummy fish, pineapple juice and tropical fruit punch.

Entertainment items for the luau party can include water-filled kiddy pools for wading, sandboxes for sandcastle building, Hula Hoops for hula contests and long sticks for limbo contests. Additional physical activities can include hula-dancing lessons, water balloon volleyball and a fish beanbag toss. Craft activities can include pine cone pineapples, where each child paints a pine cone and glues green paper leaves on top, and limbo poles, where each child paints a long stick and wraps it with decorative yarn.

The Best Foods For Preschool Birthday Parties

Make lots of snacks for a preschool birthday party.

Preschoolers like to snack so provide different types of food and drinks at a preschool birthday party. Make sure and find out beforehand if any of the children have allergies and if you need to do something special for that child. Otherwise, just keep plenty of napkins on hand for the kids. Does this Spark an idea?

Finger Snacks

Snacks that are the perfect size for small fingers are a good choice for a birthday party. Goldfish crackers, cheese squares, fruit snacks and dry cereals are good choices. Other choices include chips and dips or salsa, pretzels or party mix. Popcorn is also a popular choice among preschoolers

Meals

Miniature pizzas, macaroni and cheese, chicken nuggets and hamburgers or hot dogs will please preschools. Grilled cheese sandwiches and noodles with butter and cheese sprinkled on top are good choices for kids who may not like meat.

Sweets

You must have a birthday cake or cupcakes for the kids. Individual containers of ice cream are available in several flavors, and you can set out a tray of cookies for kids who may not like cake.

Healthy Options

For more nutritious party options, look to fruits and vegetables. Most kids like anything that comes with a dipping sauce, so cut up some raw carrots, broccoli, celery and cauliflower and offer peanut butter, ranch or thousand island dipping options. Kids also may enjoy strawberries, orange slices, apples, bananas and grapes. Provide a yogurt dip for the fruit. Granola bars are another healthy option.

Surprise Sweet Sixteen Themes On A Budget

Balloons are some of the least expensive party decorations.

A sweet sixteen party is a momentous event for a teenage girl, and often the birthday girl has a significant role in helping to plan and set the overall theme and tone. When throwing a surprise sweet sixteen party, carefully consider the girl's interests and pick a theme that fits with them to ensure that she will enjoy her party. To decorate within the theme on a tight budget, strategically choose simple, inexpensive decorative items that will make a big impact. Does this Spark an idea?

Simple Themes

Complicated themes often require complicated decorations to pull off, so opt for a simple theme to keep the party on a budget. Simple themes could be colors, shapes, sports teams or a favorite holiday. Use decorations that you already have or buy inexpensive party basics. For example, for a color theme, inflate balloons in the theme color with a rented or disposable helium tank or just inflate them with air and have them color the floor instead of the ceiling. Purchase disposable tablecloths in the party color and, if there is a paired color, get tableware in that color.

Locations

Choose a location that the girl enjoys and a single decoration as a focal point to make the party feel like that location. Make sure the focal point decoration is something she sees right when she arrives so she knows what the theme is. Potential locations include Hollywood with a red carpet, Paris with the Eiffel tower or the beach with an inflatable or paper palm tree. Choose other basic or homemade decorations to fit the theme. With a Hollywood party, for example, decorate with black and metallic colors, which give a glamorous feel. Some ways to include metallic colors include star-shaped confetti on the tables and large star shapes made from aluminum foil on the walls or hanging from the ceiling.

Costume Party

Make a surprise party even more surprising by having the guests dress up in costumes from a particular era, location or style. This kind of party keeps decorating costs low, because the costumed guests set most of the scene and you need not rely heavily on decorations. Some potential costume theme ideas include disco, '80s, '50s, the Wild West, a Hawaiian luau or a particular movie that the birthday girl likes. Make sure to have a costume ready for the birthday girl to change into after she arrives. Include a few simple inexpensive accessories, such as plastic flower leis for a Hawaiian luau, to complete the theme.

Pastimes or Hobbies

The sweet sixteen party is a big milestone where a girl comes of age and is no longer considered a child. As she nears her 18th birthday, she begins to become an adult in her own eyes and in others'. To play on this transition, focus the party on one of the birthday girl's favorite childhood pastimes or hobbies. She probably already has plenty of items that can serve as decorations, such as soccer equipment and jerseys for a soccer-themed party or a dollhouse and furniture for a doll-themed party. Surprise her by decorating with pictures of the birthday girl at different ages participating in that activity. Include some games that focus on the hobby, such as a relay race dribbling a soccer ball around cones or changing a baby doll's diaper with one hand. You could also focus on one of the girl's current hobbies or favorite activities.

The Best Clear Disposable Plates

Clear disposable plates are available in square and circular shapes.

Disposable plates have several different uses, such as for parties or any get-together with friends and family where regular plates are impractical. The clear disposable plates are a type of plastic plate that is generally used for casual occasions. Finding the best clear disposable plates depends on your preferences, but there are several options available to find the best plates for your personal needs. Does this Spark an idea?

Material

The clear disposable plates are always a plastic material, which creates a relatively durable plate. Due to the material, it is possible to wash and reuse the plates if preferred. When shopping for plates, try to find the ones made with thicker plastic. These will have more durability than thinner plates.

Shape

Clear disposable plates come in more than just your basic circle. There are also square clear plates available. The best plate shape is a matter of personal preferences and opinion. The circle shape is a classic plate shape, while the square plates provide clean lines and balance.

Designs

The clear disposable plates have the option of designs, which are usually on the bottom of the plate while the top of the plate is smooth. Design options vary from plain to delicate leaf or flower shapes. The design depends on the use of the plates and the venue. For more formal occasions, plates with designs are better, but for casual uses, plain ones are probably sufficient.

Cost

The cost of clear, disposable plates varies depending on the company and the number of plates purchased. Many of the plates are sold in large quantities, which can drive the price up, but you usually have the option of buying only a few plates at a time, which is a more reasonable cost. The variation in cost between brands is usually minimal. The main factors affecting cost are generally the size of the plate and the number of plates in the pack.

Lids

Some clear disposable plates have optional lids. Whether lidded plates are best depends on your situation. When guests are taking home food or when the plate is used to bring food to a venue, the lidded plates are ideal. For a simple meal, the plates without lids are sufficient.

Things To Do On Your 14th Birthday

Hosting a 14th birthday party for your young teen can be challenging because she is at the age where a birthday party in the home may seem too childlike. There are a number of ways you can give your young teen a more adult birthday party experience without forgetting she's still a child. Does this Spark an idea?

Zoo Party

Pack a birthday lunch and invite your teen daughter's friends out for a day at the zoo. A day spent looking at animals and taking in a show or two, culminating in a birthday picnic, can be a creative and fun birthday adventure for everyone involved.

Dinner Out

Take your 14-year-old and a select group of friends out to a fancy dinner where you will celebrate with a birthday cake served by the restaurant. This may be an especially good idea for a girl because it gives her and her friends an opportunity to dress up for the event.

Movie Night

Buy theater passes and gift cards and send your birthday child and his friends to the theater to enjoy a movie and movie treats, followed by cake and ice cream back at your house.

Skate Party

Many skating facilities offer birthday packages that include skate rental, special birthday skating events, cake and ice cream, and music customized for the birthday guest. A skate party for your teen and some close friends is enjoyable for the entire group.

Camping

Consider setting up a tent in the back yard and hosting a birthday camp-out sleepover. This is a good way to give your 14-year-old some freedom while still keeping an eye on the festivities.

The Best Party Plates

Plates for a party should be sturdy, festive and easy to clean. If the party or special occasion has a theme, the plates should coordinate with that theme, whether it be seasonal, holiday or event oriented. Keep in mind what will be served on the plates; a plate for dessert will not need to hold as much weight as a plate meant to hold a full dinner. Does this Spark an idea?

Cardboard

Cardboard plates can be easily found at local discount, party or grocery stores. They come in a variety of colors and designs that will likely be able to suit your party needs, regardless of the function. Cardboard plates tend to be sturdy, so holding desserts or light dinners will not be an issue. For a full meal, it may be wise to double-up the plates. Clean-up is another perk of cardboard plates, as there will be no dirty dishes to wash. Merely use and throw away.

Plastic

Plastic plates are another easy-to-find choice that will come in a variety of designs and colors. These can be found at discount or department stores. Plastic plates will be slightly more sturdy than the cardboard. Typically inexpensive, you will not need to worry about damage done to the plates during the party, like you would your fine china. Though better for the environment, as you will not be throwing them away, and your wallet since, these can be reused, plan on scheduling some dish-washing time following the party.

Glass, Ceramic and Porcelein

Glass or ceramic dishes will give the party and elegant and classy feel and will also be the most sturdy and durable choice for plates. Because they are the most fragile, these dishes will mean concern about them being damaged or broken. Consider using these only for a party for adults. These can be reused for parties to come, however, plan on spending time washing dishes with this choice as well.

The styles of plate will depend entirely on the party. A children's party would dictate colorful colors and designs, as well as cartoon characters or images, if desired. For a holiday theme, dishware often becomes readily available around the holiday season at most stores. If you don't wish to spend money, consider going with holiday colors. Red Valentine's Day plates can be reused for Christmas parties, for example. For a themed party, like a luau, consider scenic images such as flowers for the plates.

Toddler Activities In Honolulu Hawaii

A break wall makes a sheltered, warm pool for paddling on Waikiki Beach.

Honolulu, Hawaii, the largest city in the South Pacific, is home to the majority of the island of Oahu's population. The city spreads throughout the southeastern shores of the island and includes the world's most-famous beach, Waikiki. Honolulu means "sheltered bay" in the Hawaiian language, according to KITV news on their Hawaiian "word of the day" segment. That shelter means Honolulu's relatively calm waters are an ideal place to bring your toddler on a beach vacation. After bucket-and-shovel time at Waikiki, you can find a host of other activities to keep your toddler engaged and happy.

Waikiki Beach

A beach, plus a bucket and shovel, equals a happy toddler.

The best spot for a beach day with your toddler is the section of beach at the end of Uluniu Avenue, near the Hyatt Regency Waikiki. A break wall forms an almost wave-free shallow pool with a soft, sandy bottom. Your toddler can paddle around in the warm sheltered water, and the beach works well for sand-castle construction as the break wall helps keep your creations safe from a quick demise. It's easy to find someone to play with your toddler since this part of Waikiki is frequented by families. You will always find something to watch, with para-sailors floating over the ocean, and surfers and canoes coming and going. Respect the tropical sun even on a cloudy day, and regularly slather your toddler in sunscreen. Put a hat on your child that will stay on and consider a T-shirt or other sun-proof clothing. Go to the beach early or late in the day to avoid the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. time frame when the sun is most intense.

Honolulu Zoo

Komodo dragons are one of the many exhibits at the Honolulu Zoo.

At the intersection of Kalakaua and Kapahulu Avenues, the Honolulu Zoo, established in 1896, is the only zoo in the United States to have begun with a king's grant of royal lands to the people of the island. It's open most days of the year, and children 3 and under are free when accompanied by an adult. Birds and animals you will see include the Hawaiian Nene, Komodo dragon, Galapagos tortoise, black rhino, African wild dogs and a variety of monkeys. In a special program for toddlers and their parents called Critters and Crafts, you can visit the animals and then create a special animal craft. Check the zoo's calendar of events (see Resources) for times and dates. In a special area of the zoo for younger kids, your toddler can get up close to cows, goats, pigs, llamas and chickens. You can picnic on the zoo grounds or buy food at the snack bar. Stroller rentals are available.

Hawaii Children's Discovery Center

Across from the Kakaako Waterfront Park in downtown Honolulu, the Hawaii Children's Discovery Center has three levels of high-tech, interactive exhibits designed for learning and discovery. The center lets kids use all their senses to get a better understanding of the world around them. TotSpot is for the 5-and-under set to enjoy a stimulating, safe and sensory-filled space. Built in 1998, the center is in the renovated and expanded shell of an old incinerator. It is designed for the keiki o ka aina, or "children of the land" to come and play.

Waikiki Aquarium

Jellyfish are a particular hit with the younger set at the Waikiki Aquarium.

On the shoreline in Kapi'olani Park, the Waikiki Aquarium is on Kalakauau Avenue, about a 10-minute walk from the Waikiki Zoo. Here, you can easily keep your toddler entertained for an hour or so out of the sun. Opened in 1904, it's the third-oldest aquarium in the United States. The exhibits highlight the aquatic life of Hawaii and the tropical West and South Pacific. The aquarium features Hawaiian monk seals, one of the world's most endangered marine mammals. Toddlers especially enjoy watching the jellyfish as low tanks and viewing windows make the aquarium ideal for toddlers. Look for Hawaii's colorful state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapua`a. Toddlers will also enjoy a small hands-on exhibit outside where they can hold creatures like starfish. Consider walking to the aquarium, as parking is sometimes hard to find.

Wedding Guest Gift Bag Ideas

Wedding favors have transformed over the years into wedding guest gift bags for many types of weddings, especially for destination weddings where guests will enjoy activities before the wedding. Whether you're giving gift bags to your destination wedding guests or simply thanking guests for sharing your one special day, uncover a few ideas to help you put together wedding gift bags your guests will never forget.

Types of Bags

The first item you need to create a wedding gift bag is the bag or container that will hold all of the goodies. While you can use gifts bags that are sold at party stores and gift shops, there are also a multitude of other types of bags and containers you can use to create your wedding gift bags. Your options are only limited by your imagination; a few bags to consider include tote bags, gift bags, lunch boxes and hat boxes.

Create a Theme

Pick a theme for your bag and the items it contains so that it complements your wedding. For example, if you're having a beach wedding, consider using a beach bag personalized with your names and wedding date, and then fill it with beach-related items to give to guests. Items may include bottled water, sunglasses, a visor, fan, sunscreen and hat. These are all items they can use on the beach on the days leading up to your wedding or the days they tack on after your wedding as part of their vacation.

If you and your spouse-to-be are movie buffs, consider using cardboard popcorn boxes. You can fill it with a package of popcorn, boxes of candy, bottles of water and even a pair of movie or show tickets.

Key Items

With or without a specific theme, you can include helpful items in the bags. A map of the area is helpful for out-of-town guests, as are brochures with local attractions. And don't forget the food goodies. Chips, chocolates and other candies are all good gift-bag items. This is especially true for wedding guests that have come from out of town and are staying at a hotel. These gift bags can be placed in their rooms so they have access to midnight snacks.

Retirement Party Planning Checklist

Make the retirement party a jubilant hello rather than a depressing goodbye.

A retirement party should be a jubilant celebration of the reward of free time given to an employee in honor of all the hard work that was done. The party you are planning for this celebration should focus on the personality of the guest of honor rather than on your own desires. Get to know the preferences and personality of the retiree if you do not already, and arm yourself with this knowledge during the planning stages.

Theme and Budget

Start by planning on the type of party it will be. If only a few people are to be invited, then you can get by with the standard cake and gift party. Consider a roast if you are absolutely certain the guest of honor has the sense of humor to appreciate being the object of fun-loving putdowns. Create a theme around whatever plans the retiree has spoken about when he finally has free time. Regardless of the theme or style you decide on, create a budget that you know you can stick to.

Venue

Choose an appropriate venue, and make sure you can use it during the hours and day that you have planned for. Retirement parties often take place at the work site, so make sure the room where parties are usually held will be available when you need it.

Invitations

Create invitations if they are to be sent out, or keep a checklist of the names of those you plan to invite if the party will be less formal. Be sure to include a phone number for RSVPs on the invitation, or make sure everyone on your list personally agrees to be there.

Toasts

If you have decided against a roast, go the other way and inform each guest that they will be called upon to raise a toast in honor of the guest or just say a few words about memorable occasions involving the guest. If applicable, you might also consider showing a video montage of the retiree's time at his job. This type of activity will proceed much more smoothly if you assign one person to act as the Master of Ceremonies.

Decorations

Decorations should reflect upon the retiree's accomplishments. Consult with the person's family about being allowed to display awards, trophies, commendations and anything else that highlights their time as an employee.

Cake

Try to find a cake design that is suggestive of what the guest of honor enjoys outside the work environment. If the retiree is famous for telling stories about his fishing expeditions, shape the cake like a fish. If the retiree is enjoys golfing, shape the cake like the greens of a golf course.

Photos and Video

Hire a photographer or videographer to capture the party on film forever. Make sure that all the toasters or roasters take time to provide a personal statement directly to the camera about how they feel about the guest of honor.

Gift

Some companies offer a rote gift to retiring workers, but if your guest's company does not, consider what would be an appropriate gift. Ask each guest to put in a few dollars to cover the cost. Talk with the guest's peers, friends and family members to find out what would be the most appropriate retirement gift.

Sweet 16 Red Carpet Party Ideas

Many teenagers would love to have a Hollywood Red Carpet theme party.

Most teen girls want their Sweet 16 parties to be memorable and fabulous. In fact, many parents will spend a lot of cash to ensure their daughters' festivities are perfect. One common party theme is the Red Carpet theme, which is inspired by Hollywood starlets. To evoke an authentic sense of glamor and glitz, there are many details to include in your party plans. Does this Spark an idea?

Invitations

The Red Carpet Sweet 16 event is usually held in a private party room or rented club, and the party invitations will set the tone for the entire celebration. Decide what type of party attire your daughter wants, such as old Hollywood glamor or modern cocktail dresses, and inform the guests of the dress code in the invitation. Some people send the invitations on shiny gold or silver paper, while others choose a gossip magazine layout with a tabloid headline.

Decorations

At this type of party, both the outside entrance and the actual party room require decorations. Rent a red carpet runner that starts at the street or parking lot and goes to the event entrance. Use mini strobe lights to simulate the flash of cameras or hire a few actors to act as paparazzi. Hire a DJ to provide loud, high-energy music, which will also help set the tone of an exciting A-lister event. The party room can be decorated with elegant black-and-white tablecloths, votive centerpieces and simple flower arrangements, or you can use gold and silver colors. As an added touch of Hollywood decor, hang several large photos of the guest of honor, along with glittery gold stars hanging from the ceiling.

Food and Drink

If you have the budget, hire roaming waiters to serve your Hollywood drinks and hors d'oeuvres. Because the party guests are under-age, replace authentic drinks with mocktails. For example, serve sparkling cider in champagne glasses and virgin martinis. Serve teen-friendly finger foods, such as sushi bites, mozzarella sticks and meatballs. Some parents provide a chocolate fountain and chocolate-covered strawberries as well.

Party Favors

Most of the red carpet events in Hollywood aren't complete without guest gift bags, and your party should have them too. Give your guests copies of the paparazzi photos, picture frames or water bottles or candy bars with customized wrappers. Other gift ideas include personalized key chains or miniature boutique-brand soaps or candles.

Lowest Priced Maui Activities

Maui has plenty of cheap attractions.

Maui is one of the world's most romantic islands, according to Lonely Planet. But getting to and staying at such a great place comes with a price as travel to and accommodations in Hawaii can be quite expensive. However, there are numerous activities you can do on Maui that won't break the bank.

Haleakalā National Park

One of Maui's most popular destinations, Haleakalā National Park, is also one of its most affordable. According to Lonely Planet, Haleakalā is the world's largest dormant volcano. It is also home to the largest collection of endangered species in any national park, according to the National Park Service. The park offers numerous hiking opportunities, even allowing you to hike into the volcano's crater. According to Lonely Planet, the best time to visit the park is in the morning as the clouds covering the volcano tend to get thicker in the afternoon.

Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary

The Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary is a cheap option for bird enthusiasts. This 143-acre preserve provides a safe haven for rare and endangered birds. It is also home to some easy hikes that allow you to walk around the perimeter of this fecund wetlands and the swamp that surrounds it. Among the endangered birds featured at the Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary is the black-necked stilt, a wading bird whose populations totals less than 2,000 in the entire state of Hawaii. Kanaha Pond is also the site of numerous World War II era bunkers for history buffs.

Malu'aka Beach

Maui is full of beaches, most of which are free. One highlight is Malu'aka Beach, also known as "Turtle Beach." Located near the Maui Prince Hotel, this is a popular destination to rent a kayak or put on some snorkeling gear and check out the numerous sea turtles in the area, according to Lonely Planet. About 100 yards off the shore is a coral reef that provides food for the turtles. This is a popular destination, but the turtles don't seem fazed by the presence of people. The beach is equipped with plenty of parking as well as public bathroom and showers if you need to clean off after snorkeling.

What Do You Give For A 2nd Anniversary

Specific kinds of gifts for specific wedding anniversaries are ancient in origin--silver and gold anniversaries are at least as old as recorded history. But for anniversaries before the 25th, the gift-giving traditions are not as long, and not as set in stone. While guidelines do exist for what gift to give a couple at their second anniversary, gracious gift-givers will adapt their gift to the couple's needs and interests.

Traditional

Cotton or straw are the materials traditionally listed by etiquette queen Emily Post in her anniversary gift list from the 1920s. This can be interpreted in a variety of ways, of course. You may choose to gift the couple with cotton table linens, clothing, bed linens, kitchen linens, or perhaps a cotton quilt or wall hanging. Matching T-shirts, embroidered pillow shams, a woven cotton tapestry, throw, pillow or afghan all would be thoughtful gifts for many couples. If looking for a straw gift, try a picnic hamper with a set of picnic ware inside, a finely made straw hat or a set of Old World straw Christmas ornaments. Another straw gift choice would be a set of woven straw place mats or a doormat with a welcoming message on it. When you choose a gift, consider the household it is going to. If the couple in question is young and starting out their household, items like blankets, tablecloths and sheet sets would be a more helpful gift to them. For older, established couples, perhaps on their second marriage, choose more gift-like items such as pillows, wall hangings or picnic sets.

Modern

China is a contemporary gift for a second anniversary. It is also the traditional gift for a 20th anniversary celebration, but the gift possibilities for a newly married couple should ensure you don't repeat yourself at the 20th anniversary. While many couples today don't use fine china in the manner previous generations did, china can still be a decorative piece, as in a personalized anniversary plate to mount on the wall or display in a cabinet. Or, family members may consider the second anniversary a chance to gift the couple with some heirloom china items such as a tureen, tea set or pitcher. For more useful gifts to a young couple, let tableware stand in for china, and present them with a set of matching salad or dinner plates, soup bowls or mugs. An established couple might enjoy more luxury items such as china vases, ornamental platters or porcelain figurines. Coffee and tea sets straddle the line between useful and decorative for most any couple.

Flowers and Gemstones

The American National Retail Jewelers Association of the 1950s came up with a gemstone gift list for each anniversary, and the first several years are quite inexpensive. The second anniversary gift suggested is rose quartz or garnet, and they are meant to be a guide for husbands to give wives jewelry featuring those stones. If you find the traditional themes are too limiting, feel free to base a gift around these stones or the flowers associated with a second anniversary: cosmos or daisies. Some references also include lily-of-the-valley. Couples who like to garden might especially like a potted planting of these flowers, all of which are lovely and easy to grow year after year.

Outside Games For A Group Of Children

Children enjoy organized games outdoors.

Children yearn for time outside and can often entertain themselves for hours on end without any guidance. However, play often becomes more structured when a group of children gathers together. You can organize and play many outside games with a group of children. These games take only slight preparation if any at all.

Relay Races

Seemingly endless ideas come to mind when hearing of relay races or relay games. Relay races involve members of two equal teams taking turns to complete a task as quickly as possible. With children involved this could involve events such as racing to move an egg or marbles on a spoon to the finish line or moving water from one location to another without spilling any along the way. Relay games and races teach team work and encourage exercise while having fun.

Tag

Tag gets children moving.

Many variations of tag exist, so you can mix it up to challenge the children. Always explain the importance of not shoving during tag, as injuries can occur if tag gets too rough. You can easily organize and play freeze tag with a group of kids. Children play this by having one or more child designated as "it". Other children run around as the "it" child tries to tag them. When those children get tagged, they freeze until another child comes to tag and unfreeze them. Children love the chase and high-energy excitement involved in tag games.

Ball Games

Various balls can make planning activities much easier.

Having a variety of balls on hand can go a long way when trying to plan organized games with a group of children. Groups of children enjoy games such as kickball, four square, basketball, softball, soccer or flag football. Even though these games seem common, don't assume that all children know the rules. Take a moment to explain the objective and the rules of the game. Ball games teach strategy and teamwork.

Hula Hoop Games

Hula hoops provide inexpensive and fun entertainment.

Hula hoops also have a surprising number of uses when planning outdoor games. A simple game of bean bag toss can come together with a number of hula hoops and several bean bags. Children can also play a game of pass the hula hoop while holding hands. In this game the children form a line or circle and hold hands. They must then figure out move the hula hoop down the line without letting go of each other's hand.

Wedding Invitation Theme Ideas

Select a theme for your wedding invitation.

The theme of your wedding invitation typically reflects the overall theme of your wedding. Carefully select an invitation style that is visually appealing with a theme that fits your personality or the tone of your wedding. Popular themes for wedding invitations include destination, color, seasonal and modern.

Destination

Tailor your invitation to fit the location of your big day. If you have decided on a destination wedding, select an invitation that highlights the location of your wedding. This might include palm trees, a beach scene, mountains, snowflakes, seashells or the grapes of a vineyard.

Color

Select an invitation design that incorporates the colors you plan to use on your wedding day. You may have one or more colors picked out that will be used for your bridesmaids' dresses, flowers and decorations. Bring that color out in your invitations as well. Patterns, floral designs, or backgrounds on your invitations can be matched to the wedding colors you have in mind. Accessorize your invitation with a ribbon or charm in the color of your choice.

Seasonal

Winter, spring, summer or fall, a wedding invitation can be matched to reflect them all. Winter invitations can include snowflakes or red poinsettias for a Christmastime wedding. Spring or summer wedding invitations can include flowers, butterflies or greenery. Fall wedding invitations may include leaves or pumpkins with the burnt orange and red colors associated with the autumn season.

Modern/Contemporary

A modern or contemporary invitation theme can reflect the unique taste of a bride. This theme includes swirls, polka-dots, damask patterns or any images that add a touch of personality.

Mother Banquet Ideas At Church

Honor the mothers in your church by holding a banquet.

Church banquets serve as an occasion for bonding with other members and celebrating special occasions. Holding a banquet for mothers is a way to honor the moms in the congregation, whether celebrating the holiday of Mother's Day or simply recognizing their hard work and legacy within the church. Regardless of the reason, there are some ideas to consider to make sure the church banquet runs as smoothly as possible.

Food Planning

Require an RSVP for the banquet. This helps a great deal in the planning process for the meal and selecting the type of food. If a large number plan on attending, consider making it a pot-luck banquet so one particular person isn't saddled with the burden of cooking for hundreds. Require each attendee to contribute something. Assigning the general category such as main dish, side dish, drink or dessert helps ensure an equal distribution of foods. If your church has a kitchen and the banquet will be an intimate gathering of mothers, consider preparing the meal there and having volunteer servers bring out the different courses.

Decorating

The decorating of a banquet space contributes greatly to the mood of the event. Make a decorating committee to assist with the set-up. You may want to pick a theme that most mothers would enjoy, such as mothers of the Bible or a simple floral theme. For example, you could find a talented artist in the congregation to draw pictures depicting biblical moms and hang them on the walls of the banquet area along with quotes from the Bible that relate to motherhood.

Banquet Entertainment

Add some entertainment to your church banquet. While the entertainment doesn't have to last the entire event, you can reserve a certain time, such as during dessert. There are a number of possibilities when you are looking for an entertainer, including volunteer musicians from the church, who could play songs that are tributes to mothers. You could also invite a guest pastor to give a speech about motherhood. Get the children involved by having them write and perform a skit about why moms are important.

Types of Banquets

Besides a traditional Mother's Day event, there are a wide range of banquet types your church could hold that involve mothers. A mother-daughter banquet gives the ladies of the church a chance for fellowship while creating an opportunity for a special shared event. There may be different groups within the church, such as Bible study moms or volunteer moms, that meet regularly and want to hold an award banquet. You could also have a banquet designed to give moms a night out to socialize with other church mothers.

The Best American Cities For Singles To Vacation Alone

Travel

If you are single in a small town (or even a big city) it can feel like there is no one that interests you, or that you have already met everyone who is available. To avoid the "been there, done that" feeling at home, solo travel can be the best shot in the arm for your love life. When you vacation alone, it pushes you out of your comfort zone to talk to strangers, try new things, and meet new people. Even if you stay close to home (within the United States), there are lots of great American cities for singles to visit alone.

Miami

Beaches, bikinis, sunshine, pina coladas... can you think of a better recipe for singles fun? The liveliness of Miami's sandy beaches, combined with the after hours party life, is the perfect balance of fun and relaxation for any single lady or man wishing to meet someone special, or just someone fun. The city is full of singles-oriented concerts and events. Try the Byron Carlyle Theater for a fun night of dancing and music. Or check out Coyotes Bar to sip drinks with some new guys or girls. The Sonesta Bayfront Hotel is known for being a great hotel for singles, as is Four Seasons Hotel Miami. Sit poolside to chat up other vacationing beauties, or get classy in the hotel lounge.

New York

This is the city where HBO's "Sex and the City" was shot for a reason. The nightlife is unbeatable, and extremely diverse. Try the Mason Dixon bar on the lower east side, where you can have a beer and ride the mechanical bull. What better way to meet a new guy or girl, than by helping him or her up after being flung off the bull? Or head up to Tabla Restaurant and Bar near Grammercy Park, where prices are high and the dress code is strict, but where sitting alone at the bar could snag you a hot investment banker.

Las Vegas

In Sin City you can have anything you want whenever you want. The overarching attitude in Vegas is that everyone is looking for a good time. Even if you are a saint at home, you can feel confident in letting loose and releasing your wild side in this city, without fear of reprisal. Hang out by the gondolas at the Venetian, and offer a cute guy or girl a free boat ride. Can't make it to the romantic canals of Italy? There's nothing quite so romantic as floating along in a gondola right in your very own country.

Making Christmas Ornaments Out Of Travel Souvenirs

Convert travel souvenirs into Christmas ornaments to decorate your holiday tree with memories.

A common part of travel includes scouring gift shops for souvenirs that later serve as a reminder of your journey. Many souvenir shops also sell Christmas ornaments for the purpose of decorating your holiday tree with memorabilia. While ready-made Christmas ornament souvenirs are easy to find and purchase, consider instead turning ordinary travel souvenirs into Christmas ornaments. This project will preserve your trinkets and create unique homemade ornaments for your tree, or to give as gifts. Does this Spark an idea?

Types of Souvenirs

Small, lightweight travel souvenirs are the easiest to turn into Christmas ornaments. Items like refrigerator magnets, maps, postcards, wood carvings, figurines, small plastic snow globes, key chains, and shot glasses are easily converted into ornaments. A little creativity, some hot glue, eye hooks, ornament hooks and ribbon can turn these ordinary trinkets into ornaments that will hang nicely from your tree during the holiday season.

Refrigerator Magnets

Refrigerator magnets are some of the most common souvenirs purchased by travelers. These souvenirs easily attach to everyday appliances, serving as a daily reminder of the memories from your trip. Put a spin on these souvenirs and turn them into lovely Christmas tree ornaments by simply drilling a hole through the top of the magnet and stringing twine or ribbon through the hole so the ornament will dangle from your tree. Dress the magnet up for the holiday season by attaching fake holly, small pine cones or gift bows with hot glue.

Postcards and Maps

Cut out and laminate or shellac sections of postcards and maps to make ornaments that represent your journeys. Punch a hole in the top of the paper so you can hang the ornament. Use postcards and maps to line the inside or outside of classic ball ornaments, or create a hanging frame ornament that holds your postcard. Even if you aren't a traveler, this idea will help you create custom ornament gifts for people in your family who have taken a recent trip, or who travel in their spare time.

Wood Carvings and Trinkets

Small wood carvings and trinkets such as figurines and snow globes are easily converted into hanging Christmas ornaments with hot glue, eye hooks and ribbon. When converting these types of souvenirs, choose trinkets that are small and lightweight. If the ornament is too heavy, the tree will not support the weight. If you happen to find a heavier wooden souvenir that you would like to convert, attach a clip to the bottom of the trinket, allowing the ornament to clip directly onto a tree branch where it's thicker.

Key Chains and Shot Glasses

Remove key rings from key chains and attach an ornament hook to the chain to make key chain souvenirs into Christmas ornaments. A souvenir shot glass can also be turned into a Christmas ornament by using hot glue to attach a length of colorful ribbon to the inside of the glass, then tying the ribbon onto the tree.
