Spongebob Squarepants Party Ideas

SpongeBob SquarePants, the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon, lends itself to many games and activities at children's parties. With themed decorations and party supplies, and a few creative touches, you can create your own Bikini Bottom and throw a memorable bash that kids will love. Does this Spark an idea?

Party Supplies and Decorations

No SpongeBob-themed party would be complete without special supplies. Purchase SpongeBob paper plates, napkins and cups at your local party supply store. You can save money by printing SpongeBob invitations from your home computer. Several websites have free invitation templates available for download, as well as templates for a SpongeBob banner that can bear the birthday honoree's name. Decorate the party table with a large pineapple centerpiece, and scatter seashells and some inexpensive unused yellow square sponges around the table. Create a Bikini Bottom atmosphere by hanging yellow and blue streamers and balloons around the room, as well as underwater accents such as life preservers and fish cutouts.

Games

Get creative when it comes to entertaining. Almost any recurring theme in the SpongeBob cartoon can be made into a game for little to no cost. Host a Krabby Patty relay race, where kids use plastic spatulas to flip hamburger buns into a bucket at the finish line. Pin the pants on SpongeBob can be conducted like the traditional Pin the Tail on the Donkey game. Just download a high-resolution image (so it can be blown up into a game board) of SpongeBob, and cut out pants shapes for kids to tape on while blindfolded. A sponge toss is perfect for a hot day, when kids will be eager to throw wet sponges and see who can get the most distance.

Favors

Send guests home with a beach bucket of SpongeBob goodies. Clean sand, available at most arts and crafts supply stores, can anchor items in the bottom of a plastic beach pail. Include a packet of SpongeBob fruit snacks, SpongeBob coloring book, and a small SpongeBob plastic figure or keychain. Or let your child pick out his favorite SpongeBob-themed items to include in the buckets.

Spongebob Squarepants Cake Ideas

SpongeBob SquarePants Cake Ideas

SpongeBob SquarePants fans of all ages will enjoy a custom SpongeBob cake for their birthday or other special event. While you can add as many details and embellishments to the cake as you wish, the task of decorating a cake does not have to be complicated to render impressive results. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Easy Cake

SpongeBob's rectangular-shaped body simplifies the task of recreating him in cake form. Bake cake mix or your own cake recipe in a 9-by-13-inch cake pan. If you need a larger cake, try using a sheet cake or half sheet cake to accommodate the number of guests at your party.

Use yellow food coloring to tint homemade buttercream frosting or store-bought white frosting, and frost the top 2/3 of the cake yellow. Draw SpongeBob's face onto the yellow area of the cake using black frosting in a parchment decorating bag outfitted with an open decorating tip. Refer to a picture of SpongeBob to help you with the details.

The bottom area of the cake can be frosted with chocolate and white frostings to create SpongeBob's shirt and pants. Add details with additional frosting.

Shaped Pan

Wilton Industries manufactures several SpongeBob SquarePants-shaped cake pans. These pans can be purchased new from Wilton's website or from cake decorating supply stores. You may also be able to find used pans at a discounted price on Internet sites such as eBay.com or Amazon.com, as well as at thrift stores or yard sales.

Simply pour cake mix into the greased pan, and you will have a perfectly shaped SpongeBob cake after baking. Decorating instructions are usually included with new pans, although the process is as simple as tinting frosting to the desired colors and covering the cake.

Underwater Scene

Instead of making a cake that looks like SpongeBob SquarePants, you can create an underwater scene to include SpongeBob and his friends. Frost any shape of cake with blue frosting to represent water. Choose the size of the cake based on the amount of servings you need for your event. Add a little sand to the cake by sprinkling on crushed graham crackers until you have achieved the desired effect.

You may be able to find SpongeBob cake toppers, but clean plastic toys work just as well and can be used as an additional gift for the cake recipient. If you're feeling ambitious, you can shape Rice Krispy treats into SpongeBob's pineapple house and decorate it with tinted frosting before placing it on the cake.

Spongebob Party Games

Hosting a SpongeBob SquarePants party can be great fun for a birthday, to celebrate a momentous occasion, or even as a hilarious twist to such adult parties as retirement or bon voyage celebrations. Once you have the party favors, tablecloths and invitations, it is the games that will complete the experience for your guests.

Group games

Many common party games can be given a SpongeBob face-lift for your party. A printed picture of Sandy Cheeks and a piece of brown string (fluffed at the edges or wrapped in brown cotton) with a pin in it are all you need for "Pin the Tail on the Squirrel."

Large yellow sponges can be soaked in water to make a messy, wet "SpongeBob Relay" in which the participants try to fill buckets across the yard from the starting area. The sponges themselves make great party favors for the guests to keep.

In keeping with the spirit of the show, you can have bubble-blowing contests to see who makes the largest, smallest and "Squidward" bubbles. Bonus points can be given if someone actually uses the bubble-blowing "technique" from the show.

DVD Games

DVD games are a great way to wind down a group of excited partygoers as you transition from outside play to cake and presents. Simply pick up a few episodes of the "SpongeBob SquarePants" TV show and impose rules on the participants. Common rules include standing on one's head whenever Mr. Krabs says "money" or playing musical chairs and making someone "out" every time SpongeBob laughs. For real enthusiasts, you might even try acting out the scenes in front of the TV or turning off the sound and resupplying the voice acting.

Commercial games

Viacom publishes a wide variety of commercial SpongeBob tabletop games that are also great for parties. Ants in the SquarePants, SpongeBob Kid Cranium and SpongeBob Monopoly are variants that are enjoyable for participants of all ages. In some of these games, the children actually have an advantage over the adult players.

Commercial video games are available for free on the SpongeBob website, or for purchase for home entertainment systems, such as the Nintendo Wii.

Spongebob Party Food Ideas

Prepare food items for a SpongeBob themed party based on the foods on the cartoon show, featuring foods from the sea. These aren't your classic seafood dishes, though. Making them will allow you to use your own creativity to present some of the unusual dishes featured on the cartoon. Does this Spark an idea?

SpongeBob Fruit Salad

This is a traditional fruit salad, but served the same way characters serve it on the SpongeBob show. Hollow out the bottom of a pineapple and place the fruit salad in it. Include fruits such as watermelon, cantelope, grapes, cherries and strawberries. Place a pineapple fruit salad holder on each table so the children can help themselves while waiting for appetizers and entrees.

Baked Worms

Okay, don't worry, these aren't really worms. Instead they are hot dogs sliced sideways into strips with strips of cheese wrapped around them. Use a can of prepared croissants and unwrap the croissants and wrap the dough around the hot dogs and cheese and bake. This will provide a finger food for the children to enjoy while waiting for their entrees.

Seafood

Take the term seafood loosely with these items that make up the entrees for the party. On the cartoon, one of the staple foods that shows up are crabby patties. These are small hamburgers made out of crab. Instead of using crab, since it could get expensive and might not be a hit with the kids, serve them small hamburgers known as sliders. Another food item to serve which actually is seafood would be fish sticks.

Dessert

Serve the kids some worms for dessert--gummy worms to be exact. Make a large bowl of jello. Before it sets, add a large amount of gummy worms into the bowl and place it into the refrigerator. As an added item, you could include gummy fish, so the children can enjoy worms and fish for dessert, just like SpongeBob and his friends do on the cartoon.

Pampered Chef Party Ideas

A Pampered Chef party should be fun and relaxing.

Pampered Chef originated in 1980 when its founder, Doris Christopher, was looking for a way to make money and stay home with her two small children. She hit upon the Pampered Chef model of direct sales and in early 2003 there were about 71,000 salespeople working for Pampered Chef. Pampered Chef salespeople host parties where they earn commissions by demonstrating and selling kitchen gadgets and related items. If you are a Pampered Chef consultant, you have already received training in sell products. If you are hosting a party, your consultant will give you ideas on what to do. Here are some additional tips. Does this Spark an idea?

Festive Atmosphere

Remember that many people attend Pampered Chef parties simply to socialize. Set up a casual atmosphere with drinks and snacks so that people feel free to chat. Try red or white wine or a bit of champagne along with the soda and sparkling juices. Serve simple finger foods and snacks, especially those that use Pampered Chef tools or ingredients. Play some pleasant instrumental music in the background. Be sure to start and end your party on time and keep things moving quickly during the party.

Demonstrate the Merchandise

Part of the appeal of Pampered Chef parties is the ability to try a tool or see someone else use it before committing to buying it. By using demonstrations, you and your consultant you will be able to sell more. Make sure the guests are seated close enough so that items can be passed around and examined. Once a guest has passed an item around, you can refill drinks or plates and not be in the way.

Have a Giveaway

Let's face it -- people love getting things for free. No matter what happens, try to make sure that every guest at your party goes home with something. It could be a small prize, a free sample, or a catalog to peruse later. Giving away a few inexpensive prizes will pay off since people who get a chance to try something often end up purchasing other items. Be sure to label any handouts or freebies with a name and contact information.

Enlist Others

One of your main goals as a host should be to recruit other friends to have parties or to sell Pampered Chef products. Point out that distributors receive discounts on their purchases and have the opportunity to make money by selling products themselves. Hosts receive some Pampered Chef merchandise for free. Hosts with guests who book parties often receive rewards in the form of free products or discounts. You may be able to ask a friend to help you with the party set-up. This may encourage her to have her own party.

Spongebob Party Favors To Make

It starts with a yellow sponge.

Children of all ages love SpongeBob Square Pants. Parties planned around a SpongeBob theme are always a hit. SpongeBob favors for the party guests to take home are simple to make with just a few craft supplies. They won't take you long to make and your child's party guests will be thrilled to take SpongeBob home with them at the end of the party. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Cut a small slit in each long side of a yellow kitchen sponge and slide one yellow pipe cleaner in each for SpongeBob's arms. Glue them in place. Bend the pipe cleaner to simulate four fingers at the end of each "arm." Tack the end of the pipe cleaner to the wrist with a drop of glue.

2. Cut two small slits in the bottom, short side of the sponge. Slide two white pipe cleaners into place and glue them for Bob's legs.

3. Cut out one strip of white construction paper 3/4 inch wide by 8-1/2 inches long for each SpongeBob shirt.

4. Cut one strip of brown construction paper one inch wide by 8-1/2 inches long for SpongeBob's square pants.

5. Overlap one brown strip on top of one white strip by 1/4 inch so that 1/2 inch of white shirt is left showing and glue in place. Make large, wide dashes with a black marker to simulate SpongeBob's belt.

6. Wrap the shirt and pant combination around the bottom portion of the yellow sponge, overlapping it in the back, and glue it in place. Trim the overlap, if necessary, to 1/2 inch.

7. Cut two white triangles to simulate SpongeBob's shirt collar and one red tie shape and glue them to the center-front of the shirt and pants already in place on your sponge. Allow the tie to cascade over the pants.

8. Cut three exaggerated eyelashes from the black construction paper to go over each of the googly eyes and glue them in place, anchoring them on the back of each eye. Glue the eyes, complete with eyelashes, in place on the top third of SpongeBob's face.

Spongebob Birthday Theme Decorating Ideas

Excite your party guests with a SpongeBob theme birthday party.

"SpongeBob SquarePants" is a Nickelodeon character who lives in an underwater city called Bikini Bottom. In the show, the color scheme consists of vibrant blues, yellows, oranges and greens. When decorating for a SpongeBob theme birthday party, it's important to stick with the color scheme to create the Bikini Bottom atmosphere. Guests will be thrilled to see the effort you put into designing the ultimate SpongeBob theme birthday party. Does this Spark an idea?

Wall Decor

Birthday party decorating is never complete until you hang the streamers and balloons. For a SpongeBob theme birthday party, decorate with yellow, orange and blue balloons with teal and sea-green streamers. Hang SpongeBob posters and a SpongeBob pinata, or decorate with posters of his friends such as Patrick Star, Sandy Cheeks or Squidward Tentacles. By the kitchen, place a sign that says "Krusty Krab," which is SpongeBob's place of work.

Windows and Ceiling Decor

Create an ocean-like atmosphere by covering the windows with blue or green cellophane. When the light shines through, it will create the appearance of green or blue light, resembling the ocean. Rip green streamers in varying lengths and hang from the ceiling to resemble sea weed. Sea-life creatures may be hanged from the ceiling by fishing wire, so they appear to be swimming around on their own, as fishing line is hard to see.

Food Decorations

On a platter in the dining area, place plenty of "Krabby Patties," or hamburgers, for the birthday feast. As a table centerpiece, hollow out a pineapple, cut out an area for a door and windows. SpongeBob lives in a pineapple, so the hollowed out replica is sure to be a thrilling decoration for children. Blue jello may be prepared in a clear dish, complete with shark-shaped gummy snacks inside. Top with whipped cream and refer to it as "sea foam." For drinks, place a pitcher full of blue or purple drink mix. Place a sign on the blue drink that reads, "Ocean Juice," and a sign on the purple drink that says, "Squid Ink Drink." Small treats like fish-shaped crackers or sea-life candies may be placed in sand pails around the dining area.

Outdoor Decorations

An outdoor sign with an arrow pointing to the house that says "Bikini Bottom" will let guests know where the party is. Hang balloons and sea creatures outdoors. Sand may be sprinkled up the sidewalk. Stations for activities may be set up outdoors with signs such as "Sponge Toss" where guests play catch with wet sponges, or "Jelly Fishing" with nets and a bucket filled with water and party favors.

Special Event Theme Ideas

Special Event Theme Ideas

Theme parties are a fun way to liven up any special event, such as a birthday, graduation, New Year's Eve, July 4th and more. Many themes are interchangeable and do not have to be applied to one specific type of event. Get creative and make your own variations of suggested themes that will reflect your individuality. The best part about theme parties is they can be as simple or as elaborate as you wish. Does this Spark an idea?

Disco

This theme is easy to do and great for a birthday party or fundraiser, according to Natasha Garber's article, "Disco-theme Fundraiser Keeps Costs Low, Revenue High for Daffodil Ball." Disco balls and glittery decorations are relatively inexpensive and easy to find, or they can even be made at home. Cover the walls with homemade 45-rpm record sleeves of bands that were popular in the 1970s. Go vintage when it comes to clothing--raid the charity shops to come up with brightly colored leisure suits, hot pants, platform shoes and jumpsuits.

For a variation on the theme, consider renting out a roller skating rink and hold a roller disco. One of the most important details for setting the mood is the music. Either rent a disk jockey to play 70s tunes, or create a playlist on your iPod and connect it to speakers at the party. Voila--instant time warp.

Luau

Throw a Hawaiian-themed party for New Year's Eve to shake off the winter blues. Encourage guests to dress in Hawaiian print shirts, muumuus, grass skirts and even coconut bras for the very brave. Glue plastic flowers to hair clips for the ladies. Stock up on flowered leis for everyone. Decorate your walls with construction paper cut-outs of flowers, palm trees, surfboards or anything that puts you in a tropical mood. Set up a tiki bar and serve fruity cocktails like pina coladas to adults and fruit punch for the kids. A pig roast would be great, but cold ham and chicken are good alternatives. A tropical fruit salad of mango, papaya, pineapple and banana would make an appropriately exotic dessert.

Clue

Arrange a mysterious black tie Halloween party based on the board game Clue. Designate sections of the party room to be a "room" from the game, like the Billiard Room, Conservatory, Ball Room and Study. Set out props to represent the murder weapons of dagger, lead pipe, rope, candlestick, revolver and wrench. Guests should dress as their favorite character from the game, choosing from people like Miss Scarlett, victim Mr. Boddy, Professor Plum and Colonel Mustard. The host chooses in advance who the murderer is, and posts clues around the party room. At the end of the night, those who guess correctly win a prize.

Special Event Fund Raising Ideas

Bake Sale

If you are involved in an organization that needs to raise funds for costs of operation and spreading awareness for your cause, sponsoring a special event is a good way to do it. A variety of events from which you can choose allow you to raise funds through selling goods or collecting a donation fee. Get your committee together and begin deciding which type of special event for fundraising bests fits your organization.

Charity Fitness Event

Organize a one-mile fun run or walk in your community. Enlist the help of other organizations that may have planned a similar event, and decide on a venue such as a local park. A short distance, non-competitive run or walk is ideal because you will need fewer resources and time to plan it versus a 5K or 10K athletic event. Charge your participants enough money to cover your costs as well as give you $5 to $10 per participant that will go directly to your organization. Also offer the opportunity for supporters to make additional donations. Be sure to advertise through brochures, fliers and posters where the funds will be going. Include children and pets to appeal to a larger audience and invite local partners and entertainment to your event to create a fun and lively fundraising atmosphere.

Meals and Parties

This event can be as simple as a spaghetti dinner or pancake breakfast or as elaborate as a Halloween ball. For this type of event, your group will choose a local venue such as a school cafeteria or recreation center and purchase and cook the food being served. Charge those attending enough to cover the cost of the food and then an extra $5 to $10 that will go directly to your group. If you are sponsoring a holiday party, get into the spirit to make it a fun atmosphere for your guests. Decorate the venue in a festive manner, dress up, and offer games and prizes or entertainment.

Selling Food and Homemade Crafts

A popular form of fundraising is sponsoring a bake sale. This type of event can successfully raise money for your group, but consider adding a special touch to make your bake sale stand out among others. For example, include only items made from local ingredients, such as butter or fruits from nearby farms. You can also combine selling traditional baked goods with those that are gluten-free and dairy-free to appeal to people with dietary restrictions or those with an interest in health. Finally, consider expanding your bake sale to furry friends. Baked goods made especially for dogs and cats are becoming increasingly popular, and you might encourage a pet owner visiting your table to pick up an extra item.

Another fundraising option is to consider the skills of your group and use those to create items to sell. For example, if a few people are good photographers, turn their pictures into greeting cards and sell them in packs of six. If some people are good with scrapbooking, use those skills to create gift bags or boxes and sell them as gift wrapping sets. All of these types of items are ideal around the holiday season when consumers are looking for something special to add to gifts they are giving.

Spa Themed Bedroom Wall Decor

Wall Fountain

A spa is the term used for a peaceful get away where people are pampered and made to feel good. The rooms in a spa are open and airy. The color scheme is usually a neutral cream or tan. These cools tend to sooth the spa visitor. Spas are also closely connected to water, so blue colors are evident in the accents. These blues are usually the natural colors of tropical water or pale skies. The feeling of a spa can be brought into the bedroom. Keep the walls of the bedroom a light cream color. Does this Spark an idea?

Fountains

Water is a main component of a spa. The noise soothes and brings peace to the hearer. A bedroom wall could be a perfect place for a faux-stone fountain. Look for one in a natural stone color that can be hung on the wall. Once the fountain is mounted and running, consider floating water lilies or roses in the water. Fresh herbs can be add as well. Mint or lemon balm gives off a clean, refreshing scent. If cleaning out the plant remains later is deemed too much work, then use silk flowers. Scented oils can also be added to the water to create a room full of soothing scents.

Wood Treatment

The shutters on the windows at spas are usually made from dark wood. Purchase one large wooden blind or two smaller ones in the curtain section of the home improvement store. If you prefer, bamboo shades can be used. Hang these on a blank wall. Mount a curtain rod at the top and hang shear light colored curtains around them. This creates an illusion of having more windows and open space in the bedroom.

Stone Art Treatment

Create a large piece of stone art to hang on the wall. Take a thin piece of plywood. Paint the wood in a cream or light tan color. Spread thinset adhesive on the board and start placing small polished river stones on the board. Keep them close together. Place the larger stones first then fill in the gaps with the smaller stones. Let dry overnight. Mount the artwork on the wall using metal brackets. On either side of the artwork, mount wall plant pots in neutral colors. Plant tropical plants in the pots that drape over the sides and hang down the walls. Below the artwork, mount two square lights on the wall. Use low-wattage light bulbs so you get a soft under-lighting effect for the artwork.

Software For Designing Wood Projects

Software can help to plan your next woodworking project.

Not only a hobby, woodworking design can be incredibly practical and useful. The entire process can be difficult and tedious, especially during the pre-design stage when most people attempt to imagine what the final product should look like, as well as what the hypothetical dimensions will be. Luckily, today there are many software programs that allow these pre-design phase features to come to life, helping you to plan your future woodworking projects.

Picnic Table Design Software

Picnic Table Design Software allows woodworkers to do just what they might imagine software with this name will do---design picnic tables. Created by software engineer David Eidsness, Picnic Table Design Software allows you to create a table of specified dimensions and shape and then shows you the exact number, dimensions, and types of boards you will need to construct it. All plans are constructed as based on the user's input, allowing lots of customization.

Patio Table Software

Similar to Picnic Table Design Software is Patio Table Software, available as a Zip file downloadable free of charge. It allows users to design a patio table based off of specific user inputs. Patio tables can be created to match the size, look, and feel that the user wishes. The software will then break the model down into specifics, telling the user the list of supplies that he will need.

Easycab Pro Builder 7.0

Although tables and chairs might be tricky, cabinets---especially those created with sophisticated designs---can be far more difficult. Easycab Pro Builder 7.0 allows woodworkers to calculate 50 cabinets at once. There is also a library filled with predesigned cabinet types. Features of the cabinets can be altered at the user's preference. Not only does it break the cabinet building process down into the basic board types and lengths that will be needed, it also includes an estimated pricing calculator that lets you estimate how much each cabinet design will cost. It allows a customized interface as the user can sort data and information by several categories, including "wood type," "label," "part name" and "part number."

Softbox Vs Umbrella Light

Decisions about lighting can drastically alter the resulting photograph.

Professional photographers use specialized lighting to create high-quality indoor portraits and still-life images. Umbrellas and softboxes each reflect and modify light differently, and skilled photographers can use either to create a variety of striking images. Does this Spark an idea?

Umbrella

Umbrellas offer photographers an inexpensive, portable indoor lighting solution ideal for small spaces. Umbrellas illuminate a large area indiscriminately, making them a common accessory in the fashion photography studio. Photographers can easily blow out the highlights and wash out portions of the photo by using too much light with an umbrella. Umbrellas may also result in noticeable catch-lights, or chunky shapes in reflective surfaces such as the eyes of a model. If you need your light to spill into the background and don't mind the unevenness that can occur, Brooklyn-based portrait photographer Steve Prue suggests using an umbrella.

Softbox

The softbox offers more control and even dispersal of light than umbrellas through a variety of shapes and masking options. Softboxes allow photographers to position the light source very close to a subject, creating a soft yet strong light on the subject that leaves the background a dark shadow. These lighting accessories also cost more, on average, than umbrellas.

Combination

Most professional photographers use both umbrella and softboxes, often in combination during the same shoot. Photographers can create a variety of distinct lighting styles through innovative use of lighting elements that combine softboxes and umbrellas.

Sock Monkey Gifts

Create sock monkeys using an old or new pair of socks.

For the avid toy collector or someone who just loves monkeys, sock puppet gifts are a collection must have. The first sock monkeys were created by parents to give as inexpensive stuffed animal gifts to children in the home. The original sock monkey was made using Red Heel socks created by the Nelson Knitting Company in 1932. By 1951 the monkey was such a popular gift, instructions were included with each pair of socks purchased on make or sew a sock monkey.

Personalized Sock Monkey

Sock monkeys are made in several sizes, colors and prints allowing a gift giver to choose a more personalized gift. Make a sock monkey even more personal by dressing it in doll clothes or toys that suit the receiver's fashionable side. For example, if the gift receiver enjoys the beach dress the monkey in a bathing suit, sunglasses and a sun hat.

Scarf and Hat

Heads and hands need to be kept warm during the winter months, making a sock monkey scarf and hat a useful, but humorous gift for any age. The hats look like little sock monkeys sitting on your head and the scarves use the same colors as the original sock monkey with little monkey faces stitched or sewn into the ends of the scarf.

Slippers

Sock monkey slippers come in most shoe sizes, from babies to adults. These slippers are made from socks in the original sock monkey colors. A full sock monkey head is the top of the slipper, reminding anyone who wears them that they are still a child at heart. These slippers come with nonskid bottoms sewn into each pair.

Bottle Caddy

Keep bottles of wine or other beverages from sweating and making a mess on a countertop or on the go with a sock monkey bottle caddy. Just like the original sock monkey, these bottle caddies are made using Red Heel socks and will no doubt be the topic of discussion at your next dinner party.

Soccer Birthday Party Favor Ideas

End a soccer party with a themed favor.

Kick a goal at the end of the party with soccer-themed party favors. Giving each guest a soccer party favor is an appropriate thank you. Consider the ages of guests when choosing soccer-themed favors. Choose favors that are safe and entertaining for the kids. Print a thank-you message for each favor and tie it onto the package before passing out the treats. Does this Spark an idea?

Soccer Ball

Soccer balls make a fitting party favor for a soccer birthday celebration. The party favor budget will determine the type of soccer balls you purchase. If you're on a limited budget, choose miniature soccer balls, about 1 or 2 inches in diameter and often available at party supply stores. They might be a bouncy ball painted to resemble a soccer ball or a softer ball. A slightly larger foam soccer ball is an option if you have a little more money. Discount stores sell these types of balls in the toy section. For those a more extravagant budget, purchase each guest her own full-sized soccer ball as a favor.

Jersey

A soccer jersey is a larger favor idea but will be a lasting reminder of the party. A generic soccer jersey is likely to be more affordable if money is an issue. Arrange to have the jerseys customized with each guest's name on the back. Another option is a T-shirt with a soccer theme. Buy shirts in the celebrant's favorite color or provide a rainbow of options.

Treat Bag

Fill a treat back with multiple soccer-themed items. Look for a favor bag with a soccer theme or decorate a plain paper lunch bag with soccer stickers. Add age-appropriate soccer items into the decorated bags. Whistles make a fitting option, or look for a soccer ball-themed whistle for an even stronger connection to the theme. Soccer stickers or temporary tattoos are an option for kids of all ages. Include a small bottle of sports drink. Add other themed items such as soccer-shaped chocolates, pencils, key chains and soccer trading cards.

Snack Ideas For A Kid'S Birthday Party

Snack ideas for a kid's birthday party should be simple and fun. You most likely will not be serving the birthday cake right away, and the partygoers may get hungry. If they don't have anything to snack on, they may not have a good time. A few munchies can help make the party a success. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Traffic Light Crackers

Traffic light crackers are easy to make and kids go crazy for them. Break large graham crackers into four pieces along the crackers' perforated lines. Spread some peanut butter on each cracker. Arrange the crackers vertically on a platter. Place a red M&M or Skittle at the top of each cracker, a yellow candy in the middle and a green one at the bottom. You now have what looks like a traffic light. Set out a platter full of these snacks so that the children can grab one when they are hungry.

Caramel Apples

Caramel apples are a great snack to serve because they take very little time to prepare and use only two ingredients. Purchase six apples and a jar of caramel ice cream topping. Wash and slice the apples. Pour the caramel topping into a small bowl, place the bowl on a platter and arrange the apple slices around it. Children can grab an apple slice and dip it in to the caramel whenever they get hungry.

Cereal Party Mix

Cereal party mixes are easy to make, and you can add different ingredients each time you make a batch. This recipe that uses a few different types of cereal: In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of Corn Chex, 2 cups of Cheerios and 2 cups of Frosted Mini Wheats. Add 8 ozs. of raisins and 8 ozs. of salted peanuts. Mix the ingredients together and set out for the kids to snack on. Or, fill small plastic zipper bags with the snack, so that children can eat the party mix like they do a bag of potato chips.

Smoker Trailer Cooking Temperatures For A Pig

Whether your smoker is stationary or portable, like a smoker trailer, there is no difference in the temperature that you use to smoke a whole pig. The time-honored key to smoked pig is "low and slow." This means you should aim for a temperature between 200 and 250 degrees. At that temperature, it will take anywhere from eight to 16 hours to cook the pig to an internal temperature of 170 degrees depending on its size. Add this to my Recipe Box.

The Smoker and Its Parts

The traditional smoker trailer has a firebox located off the side of the cooking chamber and a smokestack on the other side. This design draws cold air into the firebox, generates smoke and heat, which course over the pig and then out the smokestack. Depending on the materials that your trailer was constructed out of and how tight the smoker is sealed, there can be a significant difference in temperature between the two sides of the smoker. The end closest to the firebox can be up to 50 degrees hotter than the far end on some smokers. Because of this difference in temperature, hog aficionados often have thermometers installed at both ends of the smoker in order to monitor the cooking process.

Maintaining Heat

Smoking a pig is an all-day (or all-night) affair and will require you to replenish your firebox and make constant adjustments to your airflow to control the temperature. Restricting airflow by using the dampers on the firebox and smokestack will reduce the temperature, and, conversely, opening those up will raise the temperature. A hog should be initially placed in a "hot" smoker at about 250 degrees. It will over the course of an hour or two drift slowly down to about 200 degrees. At 200 degrees you should be ready to replenish the wood in the firebox. In doing so, the temperature may spike up to 250 degrees and beyond. Be prepared to limit the airflow to the box and smokestack to keep the temperature below 250 degrees.

Positioning and Cooking

When cooking a whole pig, you want the tail end of the hog to be toward the firebox end of the smoker, as the hams will take longer to cook and will benefit from the higher temperatures. One of the challenges of smoking a pig, especially over such a long period or time, is the urge to check on the pig. Every time that you open the doors on your cooking chamber, you add about 15 minutes to your cooking time and subject the meat to variances in temperature that are not desired. Unless you are mopping the pig with a sauce or wet mop, the doors should remain closed. This much is agreed upon, but, beyond that, barbecue enthusiasts have notorious disagreements as to attend to, season, rotate, cut and baste their hogs.

Smith Machine Vs Free Weights

Free Weights

There is always great debate about which is better: lifting on a Smith Machine or using free weights. Your experience level and the type of lifts you want to perform will play a factor in the decision.

Exercises

There are some exercises that can only be done with free weights, like dumbbell curls. Exercises done on a Smith machine are limited to those performed with a barbell.

Movements

Smith machines will help with proper movements of a lift. Using free weights increases the risk of injury due to incorrect form.

Weight

Smith machines allow lifters to perform exercises with more weight because they offer support. A free weight offers no support -- just pure resistance.

Versatility

Free weights allow more versatility than Smith machines. Only certain muscle groups can be targeted at one time with Smith machines.

Considerations

Use both free weights and the Smith machine when working out. The variety will keep your muscles from getting into a routine.

Smith Machine Pros & Cons

Most commercial gyms are chocked full of gadgets laden with knobs, pulleys and buttons that most newbies don't know squat about begin using properly. Similarly, TV fitness gurus are all over the tube, hocking the latest in fitness gimmickry that eventually makes its way into the health clubs. Sadly, a majority of these devices don't offer the gym rat much in the way of functionality. An exception is the Smith Machine.

History

Iconic health and fitness advocate Jack La Lanne had built a similar contraption to what would become the modern Smith Machine in the 1950s. Bodybuilder Rudy Smith liked the machine but felt it could be improved upon, so he had a copy built to his specs, which he set up in a Los Angeles. The machine became a hit with gym members, and once word got around, several health club chains were inquiring about getting their own Smith machine.

How it Works

The "barbell" of the Smith is counterbalanced to ensure the bar's smooth glide down each vertical slider. Some Smith designs also use a simple pulley system that allows users to manipulate the bar with ease. Nearly all are designed with their frames built at a gradual slant, which enlarges the base and adds to the machine's stability considerably. Many feature added safety blocks than can be secured at certain points on the vertical sliders that lock the bar from falling onto the user.

Pros

The Smith Machine was designed to give gym-goers the beneficial workout of free-weights but provide the safety of a machine. Exercises that bear heavy loads, such as front/back squats, bench press and seated shoulder presses, often require the assistance of a spotter. Smith Machines allow the lifter the freedom and confidence to be his own spotter by using any of the numerous bar rests next to the vertical sliders. If a load weight becomes unbearable, the user can simply rotate his wrists to settle the bar into the rest.

Cons

While there's no argument concerning a Smith's safety benefit, many argue that since the weight load is safely housed in the frame, the added recruitment of certain stability muscle fibers cannot come into play, thus making the user "weaker." Critics also say the angled frame makes proper exercise form difficult and understates the importance of form. Because of its design, the Smith machine disallows powerlifting staples such as the clean-and-jerk and snatch, and popular gym exercises like bicep curls and standing military presses.

Warning

Before trying any exercise on a Smith Machine, ask a qualified health club staff member for a demonstration of the movements that can safely be performed on the machine. Do not overload the bar with a weight you are unaccustomed to simply because of the safety features of the machine.

Smith Corona Cartridge Troubleshooting

Reinitialize your Smith Corona typewriter to reset it if you are experiencing problems with the cartridge. This step is vital if you have just replaced the correction tape, daisy-wheel or ribbon cartridge. Reinitializing the typewriter prompts the settings to work with the new consumable. It is also a good idea to verify that the ribbon cartridge is installed correctly. If it is not, the Smith Corona will not print characters accurately or even at all. These two areas are sound places to start your troubleshooting.

Instructions

1. Press the "Code" and "=" keys together to reinitialize the typewriter. The carrier position and stored memories will not be affected. If the ribbon cartridge cassette works, stop here; otherwise, go to the next step.

2. Reinstall the ribbon cassette cartridge or replace it with a new one. Open the cover to the printer.

3. Press the "Space" or "BS" (Backspace) key to move the print carrier to the center of the platen.

4. Grasp the ribbon cassette cartridge using the both hands to hold each exposed side and lift it up and out of the front.

5. Insert the back end of the ribbon cassette cartridge inside the typewriter first, then push the remainder of the cartridge in.

6. Press it down gently until you hear a click to indicate it is locked into place.

7. Rotate the ribbon feed knob counter-clockwise just enough to make sure the ribbon is not loose inside the cassette.

8. Push the "Code" + "=" keys together.

9. Close the typewriter cover.

Small Sweet 16 Party Ideas

Give a sweet 16 party to remember.

Reality television shows such as "My Super Sweet 16" offer a distorted view of what a sixteenth birthday should be. In real life, huge celebrations are overrated. Small sweet 16 parties give the birthday girl a chance to create lasting memories with a few close friends. Limiting the guest list also lends flexibility when it comes to choosing the party location and entertainment. Does this Spark an idea?

Go to a Concert

Offer your daughter the opportunity to take a few friends to a concert for her sixteenth birthday. Check the schedules of local venues to find out if any groups or artists she likes will be in the area. Research the price of tickets and decide on a budget. Tell your daughter how much you are willing to spend on tickets. For example, "I am willing to spend $200 on concert tickets for your sixteenth birthday. You can either have five $40 tickets and bring four friends, or you can have two $100 tickets and bring your best friend." Let her make the final decision.

To make the concert really special, take all of the girls out for manicures before the show or to a special birthday dinner. You could even rent a limo to transport the girls to and from the concert.

All Night Movie Fest

Plan an all-night movie fest for your daughter and her friends. Choose a theme for the movies, such as an actor the girls love or a series, like the "Scream" trilogy or the "Spider-Man" films. An alternative is to pick a favorite television show and rent several episodes on DVD. The girls can challenge themselves to watch as many episodes as possible without falling asleep.

Take your daughter shopping and let her choose the dinner menu, decorations and snacks. The hardest part of this type of party is allowing the girls to be loud and silly all night. Invest in some ear plugs for yourself and let them enjoy themselves.

Weekend Getaway

Plan a weekend getaway for your daughter and two or three of her best friends on her sixteenth birthday. You do not have to go far to consider it a getaway. Even one night in a nearby hotel with a pool will work. If your budget allows, book two adjacent rooms so that the girls can have a little privacy. You will be right there if they need you, but far enough away to not disturb them.

Another fun getaway idea is to take your daughter and a few friends to an amusement park to celebrate her birthday. Choose a park close enough to be a day trip, but book a nearby hotel so that your sweet 16-year-old can spend the entire day at the park.

Small Outdoor Wedding Ideas

Think outside the box for an outdoor wedding location.

When you're planning a small wedding, you have a great advantage in choosing a location because you don't have worry about accommodating a huge crowd. Any place that is special to you, from a back yard to a favorite spot in the woods, can be a potential setting. Just be sure to have a backup plan in case of rain or bad weather.

Back Yard

Don't dismiss what is right under your nose. If you have the space, think about having your wedding in your own back yard or in the yard of a friend or family member. Consider building an archway or gazebo in the garden or renting tents for the lawn. Since you don't have to spend money renting a location, you can splurge on the perfect dress, gourmet meal or special honeymoon.

Beneath The Trees

Instead of using a man-made arch, PerfectOutdoorWeddings.com suggests using a nice spot in the woods where large trees can act as an archway for your ceremony. The site says the natural arch will lend itself to some great photos, and there's plenty of shade if you have a sunny day.

Destination Wedding

This is a popular choice for couples who want a small wedding and have friends and families willing to do a little traveling on their behalf. Resorts, such as the Sandals chain, will plan everything from a Caribbean beach side ceremony to a reception by the pool with tropical foods. You can walk straight from the wedding to your honeymoon

Local Parks

Contact your local park authority or check its website to see if there are spots you can reserve for a wedding ceremony or reception. Many offer scenic gazebos or woodsy backdrops for your special day. Picnic shelters can be used for a casual reception and offer protection just in case it rains. If you're trying to save money, this is a good option to consider.

Poolside

Consider exchanging vows or having a reception by the pool--your own or one at a hotel. PerfectOutdoorWeddings.com says that with "great lighting and a nice tent," your wedding can be a showstopper.

Sailboat

PerfectOutdoorWeddings.com says you can "sail away with the love of your life" if you have your wedding on a sailboat. It does advise you bring along a few umbrellas in case you hit some rainy weather.

Stuck On A Location

If you're not sure where you would like to have your wedding, there are books and websites to help. Kim Knox Beckius, author of "The Everything Outdoor Wedding Book," has a website with a state-by-state guide to outdoor wedding locations. Go to outdoorweddingguide.com/outdoorweddinglocations.html, and click on your state to find B&Bs, historic properties, inns, gardens or wineries that will host weddings.

Small Gift Ideas For Kids

Give a small gift for kids to have fun with.

Many small gift ideas for kids are available. Just because a gift is small doesn't mean it sacrifices fun and entertainment. Find something unique that will appeal to the modern-day kid. Kids will love a gift that they can play and interact with. Give something that will spark creativity and keep their minds active.

Portable Video Game Player

Portable video game players make good small gifts for kids.

Many kids today love electronics--particularly video games. A great gift idea for a kid is a handheld portable video game player. These devices are small and compact to easily carry wherever the child goes. Some video games are designed with education in mind, so you will have the peace of mind that the kids aren't just having fun, but also learning at the same time. These devices will keep kids entertained for hours.

Digital Camera

Kids may want to take their own photos too--give a child's version of a digital camera. It works much in the same way a grown-up's digital camera works, but comes in several fun colors, like pink, orange and blue, with kid-inspired patterns. The camera is small and compact, and also has a protective covering for extra durability. Kids can take, view, store and edit photos with this super-fun digital camera.

Piggy Bank

A piggy bank will help kids learn to save.

Give a kid a little piggy bank so they can start saving early. Piggy banks come in all sorts of styles other than the traditional piggy, from their favorite cartoon character to their favorite sports equipment. Help them get started by putting a few coins in their new bank. For a more modern spin on this classic gift, you can give a digital money jar, which has an actual LCD on the lid to identify each coin that is inserted. Kids can see a running meter counting how much money they have in the jar.

Colors

Spur creativity with a gift of crayons or other art supplies.

For a small token for kids, give a set of crayons or colored pencils. Also, there are so many new, unique types of coloring tools out there. Give a set of colored pencils that actually smell like different yummy flavors like bubble gum, cherry, root beer and more. This set also happens to be made from 100% recycled material. Or, give the kids some crayons that are specially shaped to be stuck onto little finger tips. These unusual crayons add a fun twist to ordinary coloring. Another idea is to give crayons in the shape of little rocks made from natural soy wax. These funky little crayons are made especially for small hands to easily get a grip on while developing as an artist.

Sloth Crafts For Kids

Dioramas and clay models are all options for sloth crafts.

Sloths are found in Central and South America and are the slowest mammals in the world. They live in the treetops and can sleep as much as 20 hours each day, National Geographic reports. If you're teaching a class about sloths, there is a range of creative activities for children to do. From preschoolers up to middle-grade, arts and craft ideas abound when it comes to this lazy critter.

Paper Sloths

When teaching preschoolers about rain forest animals, you can have the children make sloths out of paper so they gain a greater understanding of what the animals looks like. Print out a template of a sloth, either found online or drawn by hand, and ask the children to color the sloth and cut around the outline. You can use tacks to make the arms and legs moveable and hang the sloths upside down around the classroom or at home. For more real-looking sloths, have the children use small pieces of felt to cover the body area.

Cuddly Sloths

Kids can transform ordinary teddy bears into sleepy sloths with a few art supplies. They can use small sticks for the sloth's claws and wool for the animal's long hair. Kids can design a mask for the teddy bear that resembles the face of a sloth and see their favorite bear become a new wild animal in no time. You can also help them make the trees that the sloths cling to out of old poster mailers or strong cardboard as the trunk, and cellophane or streamers as the foliage.

Clay Sloths

Children's creative juices will flow when they are able to create their own clay sloths. Show the kids pictures and video footage of these slow-moving mammals, then give each child a lump of clay to work with. You can supply tools to help with the molding process and show the children sculpt and smooth their designs.

Rainforest Dioramas

While learning about sloths, kids can explore the animal's habitat by making 3D dioramas. Sloths live in the rain forests of Central and South America, so provide materials that they can use to create the sloth's home. Have them make trees out of paper towel rolls and tissue paper; other materials can include small rocks, sticks and paint to color the interior of the shoebox housing the diorama. The children can create sloths with fake fur pieces, foam and even painted cotton wool.

Slosh Dance Steps

The Slosh was a popular line dance in the 1970s. It is characterized by steps, kicks and turns that are repeated over and over. The Slosh is becoming popular again in places around the world, including Scotland, Wales and the United States.

Side to Side

Face the center of the room with your feet together. Turn so your right side is now facing the center of the room and walk forward three steps, starting with your right foot. Kick once with your right foot. Turn on your left foot so your left side now faces the center of the room. Take three steps forward, starting with your left foot, and kick once with your left foot. Turn your body to the right so your right side is facing the center of the room, step forward three times and kick with your right foot. Then turn and take three more steps, beginning with the left foot.

Hop and Turn

Instead of kicking with your left foot, hop on your right foot and bend your left knee, bringing your left foot off the ground. Hop again, bringing your right knee up. Then hop a third time with your left knee up.

Continue the Side to Side

When you put down your left foot, immediately begin doing the side to side steps described in Section 1, but with your left side facing the center of the room. Add the hop and turn and keep on with the steps until you find yourself facing the center of the room again.

Add the Arms

The arm movements are pretty simple. For the most part, your arms can swing naturally as you move. The fun part comes when you hop. As you feel more comfortable with the steps, try to reach down and clap your hands underneath your knees as you raise one knee and then the other.

Slingo Word Search Online Game Cheats

Slingo Word Search is an online puzzle game.

Slingo Word Search Online is a multiplayer game in which you get to pick a category of words to search for. The categories range from city names to bodies of water. The words in Slingo Word Search Online can be hidden in the puzzle vertically, horizontally and diagonally. Finding a word in this game will earn you 200 Slingo coins. By completing a puzzle and finding all words, you gain 15,000 Slingo coins.

Searching

One tip is to search the word search grid in a specific order. Always search the grid diagonally first -- you will often find more words this way. Then search for words horizontally and vertically.

Double Click

When you get a Slingo from a single cell match, it is worth double the number of points. That means you want to try to set up as many of these types of Slingos as you can, and you will significantly raise your score.

Highlighting

Highlighting the word search area with your cursor is another searching technique. Making the background a darker color can significantly help you improve your score, because it makes the letters stand out.

Slingo Tips

Slingo combines bingo and slots in a game that tasks players with earning the most points in order to win. Players mark their Slingo cards using numbers obtained from spinning a reel below the card (in a similar fashion to a slot machine), and earn points by marking numbers, making bingos (called Slingos here) and hitting certain symbols, such as coins, on the reel.

Work Quickly

You have a time limit for both spinning your reel and marking off any applicable numbers on your card and placing any wild jokers on the card. If you let the time expire, you lose one of your 20 spins.

Completing Patterns

Advance to the next round by completing the shaded patterns on your Slingo card. If you get a joker on the reel underneath one of your columns, use the joker on any uncovered shaded squares so that you can complete your pattern faster.

Slingo Bonus

After you've covered up shaded squares and receive another joker, carefully study your card and place it in a square that will allow you to complete multiple Slingos, if possible, to receive a bonus for the play.

Super Joker Play

Sometimes during a game, a joker in the center square of the board will become a Super Joker, which allows you to play the symbol in any column on the card. Before placing this Super Joker, look at the numbers and any jokers on the reel below the card to make sure you haven't already earned a mark on the square on which you are considering putting the Super Joker.

Slingo Supreme Hints

Slingo combines both slots and bingo in a game that requires you to complete a number of spins to match symbols on a bingo card. Fill out a row or column of five numbers to earn a slingo and score points toward winning the game. Slingo Supreme adds a wrinkle by giving you a number of special powers that help you fill your card faster.

Best Power-Ups

The Free Spin power-up is one of the most powerful, as it will help you play longer. This is especially helpful if you have some bad spins at the end of the game and need to make up points. Save the Free Spin for the end. Instant Slingo is also a useful power-up because it provides a tile that will automatically give you a slingo on your card.

Use Stars Wisely

You earn stars as you spin, and use them as currency to activate power-ups. If you do not have enough stars to use a power-up you've picked up you can turn off some power-ups that you already have activated. This will allow you to swap out lesser powers for some of the better ones.

Super Joker Matches

Occasionally, you earn a Super Joker on a spin, and can use this wild symbol to match any spot on your card. Before you play the Super Joker make sure you haven't already earned that spot on the card by checking the symbols you've hit on the reels on that spin. Otherwise you might waste the Super Joker.

Quick Matching

If you make matches on your card within a couple seconds of spinning you earn fast match points, and this point total is progressive. Memorize your card so that you can quickly match winning symbols to earn these points, which can exponentially increase your game score.

Skit Ideas For A Retirement Party

Retirement parties are a great way to honor a person's years of service. To make a retirement party a success, keep the mood light and humorous. Skits about the retiree's experience with the company and life in general are a great way to keep things fun and nostalgic.

Work Memories

Enact a situation that the retiree may have experienced at work. Have co-workers take part in the skit, and make sure that the skit brings out the personality qualities unique to the retiree, in good fun. The skit can focus on the retiree's skills, but the audience will most remember skits that demonstrate what is cherished about the retiree. Consider carrying out skits that illustrate the retiree's relationships as well.

Funny Facts

Re-enact well-known, embarrassing situations that the retiree has been in. These need not be limited to situations that occurred at work, although you should certainly include them. If there are well-known, endearing but embarrassing facts about the retiree's life outside of work, consider including them. If possible, include the original people involved in the embarrassing situation as actors. Consider exaggerating the situation to make it even funnier. Even party guests who weren't originally aware of the embarrassing facts will enjoy them.

Retiree Rap

Write a rap about the retiree's life. With rhyme and rhythm, summarize key points in the retiree's life: the names of his parents, key accomplishments and/or embarrassing stories from college, key places where the retiree worked, funny stories from those places, and anything else that will be entertaining. Get one talented performer or multiple people with acting skills to bring the rap to life. If possible, involve members of the audience.

Video Collection

Make a video collection, using real footage or filmed, reenacted events, of the retiree's time at work. Add dramatic music, intersperse it with commentary and short film sequences to make it funny, and cut it dramatically to make the collection more theatrical and engaging. Your guests will appreciate the effort that you put into it, and will enjoy the chance to watch little films about the retiree's life, created from your point of view.

Sixth Grade Science Games

Bring science to life for your kids with games.

In sixth grade science, students continue to build their base of elementary science knowledge. Many of the lessons learned in this early middle school class are important for the future development of science understanding. While not all lessons can be taught in a game format, teachers can enhance their students' understanding of this subject by engaging them in the completion of interactive science games germane to sixth grade topics.

Food Chain Sort

The food chain plays an important part in animal survival and interaction. Make this order of operations clear to your students by engaging them in a food chain sort game. To create this game, gather pictures of animals that you and your students have discussed as part of the standard food chain. Create two copies of these animal images on card stock. Jumble the two copies of the images.

When students arrive in class, divide them into two teams. Give each team a copy of the gathered images. Challenge the students to work among themselves to place the animal images in proper order on the floor to represent the food chain.

Predator -- Prey Match-up

Get students moving and thinking about the predator-prey relationship simultaneously. To prepare for this game, write names of predators and their prey on separate index cards. To avoid confusion, write the predator names in one color and the prey names in another. Before students arrive in class, tape all the predator cards on one wall and the prey cards on an opposite wall.

When class begins, divide students into three or four groups. Ask each group to line up in single file approximately halfway between the two walls. Tell the students that, when you say go, one member of each team should run to the predator wall and remove a card, then run to the prey wall and select the card of an animal that is prey to the predator listed on the first card. When students feel they have a match, ask them to bring the card to you, and you either confirm or deny the correctness of the pairing. Continue in this fashion, moving through one team member at a time. The team with the most correct matches at the conclusion of the game wins.

Solar System Unscramble

Test student understanding of the bodies that make up the solar system with this simple unscramble game. To prepare this game, gather images of the bodies that inhabit the solar system. Type out the name of each body in large print. Cut apart the letters of each name and jumble them together, placing each jumbled name in a baggie.

To play, divide students into two teams and distribute the baggies evenly between them. Place your gathered images on the chalkboard or wall. Instruct teams to race to unscramble the words and and tape them under the appropriate picture. The team that successfully unscrambles all of their words first wins the game.

Single Mormon Activities

In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, it is considered very important for young single adults to get married and start families. Because of this, many young single adult activities are planned, with many young singles attending every year in order to encourage the singles to meet and get to know each other. Here are some ideas for young single adult activities that everyone will enjoy.

Date Auction

A date auction is often a popular activity. Singles gather and auction off dates with each other. Pick a charity a donate the proceeds of the auction to that charity. This way, it's both a fun way to meet people and it works as a service opportunity as well.

To mix things up, tell the attendees to bring canned goods instead of money. They will use the cans to "buy" a date and the cans will then be donated to charity.

Box Social

Each woman will bring a picnic meal for two to the activity. As they arrive, each woman will put her box lunch/dinner on a table. Each guy will bring dessert for two and place his dessert on a separate table. At the beginning of the activity, each guy will pick a meal and whichever girl prepared that meal. The pair will have a mini picnic date as they eat together and get to know each other. When everyone is finished eating, each of the girls will pick a dessert and will eat dessert with whichever guy brought that specific dessert. This way, everybody will have 2 mini dates in one night and will get to know 2 different people as they pair off. Obviously, this activity works best if you have an even number of guys and girls. However, if there aren't an even amount of each gender, it's okay to double up if necessary.

Dances

Although rather simple and not really unique, a dance is a great way to meet new people and have fun. The key to a great dance in the music. Although this seems obvious, some dances fail at this. Just because you like a song doesn't mean it's good for a dance. The music should have a good, solid beat that makes it easy to dance. Also, there should be a good balance of slow songs and fast songs. Too many slow songs will make people feel uncomfortable, as they will feel like they are being forced to pair off. However, not enough slow songs will discourage pairing off at all. A good rule of thumb is 75 percent fast songs, 25 percent slow. A final rule as far as the music is concerned is that the music should all be current and popular so that most people will be familiar with it and therefore feel more comfortable dancing to it.

The Average Military Retired Pay

Military retirement pay in the United States is the best in the country. If you have served in the military you can draw retirement as soon as you leave service. This means that you can receive retirement pay as early as 37 years old.

National Defense Authorization Act

Changes in military retirement pay were implemented with the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2007. Since January 1, 2007 the percentage cap that limited retirement pay to a 75% cap was lifted. This means that if one serves for more than 30 years he or she is given credit for 80% of served time. For more than 40 years credit is given for 105% of served time.

Caps for New Regulations

Military retiree

Generally servicemen and women who have served are subject to the new regulations. Two categories of military retirees are excluded. Servicemen or women who are disabled are still subject to the 75% cap, unless they have served for more than 30 years. Servicemen who have received the distinction of Extreme Heroism receive an additional 10% added on to the 75% cap.

Retirement Pay Systems

There are three different retirement systems. If you entered the service prior to September 1980 you are eligible for "Final Pay" retirement. For entry between September 8, 1980 and August 1986 you are eligible for the High 36 retirement, and for entry after August 1986 you are eligible to choose either High 36 or the Career Status Bonus/REDUX (CSB). If you do not make a choice, the High 36 retirement plan will be used.

Simple Lettuce Salads

Simple lettuce salads are economical and healthy.

There are many varieties of lettuce and salad kits that include prewashed lettuce and other salad ingredients in one package available in your supermarket. Making simple lettuce salads is fast and easy, and you can dress them up or down at your discretion with salad dressings and different ingredients. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Basic Salad

In a medium size bowl, mix 1/4 cup of olive oil, a clove of crushed garlic, 1 tbsp. dried oregano, 1 tbsp. water, 3 tbsp. wine vinegar and a dash each of salt and pepper. Let the flavors steep for about one hour at room temperature. Stir the dressing and add 3 cups to 4 cups of lettuce. Toss, taste and adjust seasonings.

Salad Variations

To add texture and flavor to a simple lettuce salad, slice a cucumber, celery, radish or bell pepper and add to the bowl. Chunks of tomatoes, onions, cheese and hard-boiled eggs enhance the salad's taste. Lacy greens, such as arugula, chicory, watercress and mezzuna provide tang and visual appeal. Pieces of meat, fish or poultry transform a simple lettuce salad into a meal. For additional crunch and nutrition, sprinkle nuts or seeds on top. A handful of diced apples, pears, pineapple or bananas provides sweetness that plays well against the earthy lettuce tastes.

Salad Dressings

If you prefer more exotic tastes than a simple oil and vinegar dressing provides, dress the lettuce with a more heavily flavored dressing. There are many kinds of bottled dressings ranging from simple to exotic flavors with thin to thick consistencies. Many brands offer low calorie and fat-free salad dressing options.

Lettuce Types

Simple lettuce salads can contain one type of lettuce or a mixture of lettuce types. Romaine lettuce has long, dark green leaves that grow up to 12 inches long. It is crisp and has a distinctive taste. Hearts of romaine, the inner most part of the plant, are prized for their extra crispness and lighter color, and are frequently used to form a lettuce bowl to hold additional ingredients. Iceberg is a ball-shaped, crisp head lettuce, so named for its crunchy texture and high water content. It has a mild taste and light-green leaves that fade to white at the root of the head. Butterhead lettuce has loosely packed green leaves that form small heads. Its sweet taste and tender texture make it great to top sandwiches or use as a salad base. Bibb and Boston are two prominent butterhead varieties. Leaf lettuce comes in red and green colors, has curly long leaves and a medium-crisp texture.

Simple Ideas For My 8 Year Old Pirate Themed Party

Pirate Party Ideas

Pirate parties are one of the most popular themed party ideas for young children. They love the fantasy world of hidden treasures and daring voyages across the sea. Pirate parties are fairly easy to plan with simple, yet fun, costumes, food and drink, favors and activities. Does this Spark an idea?

Pirate Party Invitation Ideas

Invitations give the first impression of your party. Use a fun and creatively decorated one to get your young guests excited. Some invitation ideas for a pirate party include putting all the party information on a treasure map, a message in a bottle or a pirate flag complete with skull and crossbones. Use a fancy font for a pirate vibe, and don't forget to include the location and time of the party.

Have your child make up pirate names for each of their guests, such as swashbuckling Sam or dog-eyed Dinah. Address the invitations to the made-up names, and then use them during the party.

Pirate Favor and Costume Ideas

Pirate costumes are pretty easy to find at party supply stores. They are also simple to throw together using normal clothes. Guests can look up pirates online and mimic their clothing styles.

At the party, have eye patches, pirate bandannas and fake earrings available for guests to wear and to take home as favors. Stuffed parrots, maps, swords, scull and crossbones necklaces or any other pirate-related items make good favors.

Pirate Party Food and Drink Ideas

Turn normal party food into pirate food, with fish-shaped crackers and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches cut with fish shaped cookie cutters.

For a drink, serve sprite with red ice cubes, and call it shark blood punch. Make the ice cubes by freezing a red tropical punch drink in ice trays the night before the party.

For dessert, order a pirate-themed cake. These can be made in the shape of pirate hats, ships or treasure chests.

Pirate Party Activities

You cannot have a pirate party without a treasure hunt. Split the party guests into two teams. Have them pick a group name. Then, give them each clues and a treasure map that lead to hidden treasure. Candies and small toys are great items to add to a hidden treasure lot. Make sure there is enough for all the guests, not just the group that finds it.

Simple Hawaiian Decoration Ideas

Decorating with Hawaiian themes.

There are two ways to approach decorating with a Hawaiian theme. The kitschy, "we're throwing a party" style is one way to use a Hawaiian theme. The other way to incorporate a Hawaiian theme is with d cor that reflects the beauty of the Hawaiian islands, using products native to the region. Does this Spark an idea?

Flowers

Bird of paradise.

Hawaii is famous for its beautiful flowers, and any d cor with a Hawaiian theme should include flowers. Bird of paradise flowers placed in vases make a stunning visual impact. While fresh flowers are ideal, artificial bird of paradise flowers can be used as well. Leis, the circular neck adornments, can also be worn to add to a Hawaiian look. Real Hawaiian leis are carefully created using fresh flowers. For a party theme, artificial leis work fine.

Rattan and Bamboo

Bamboo adds the feel of the islands.

Furniture made out of rattan or bamboo creates a Hawaiian or tropical ambiance. Put bamboo place mats on wood or glass tabletops and counters to add a tropical look.

Pineapples and Palm Trees

Pineapple fields forever.

Pineapple fields are plentiful in the Hawaiian islands. Use fabric with a pineapple print on curtains, tablecloths and throw pillows. Palm trees are also associated with the tropics, so place potted palm trees around the area to add some tropical flair.

Hula Skirts

Hula skirts are reminiscent of luaus, which are popular on the Hawaiian islands. Craft hula skirts can be found at party and craft stores. Sometimes made of tan plastic cut into strips, craft hula skirts can also be made from a green, heavy rattan paper material similarly cut into strips. Create a table skirt using the hula material, or place a length of hula skirt across the top of fences and arbors for outdoor use.

The Tiki Mask

Tiki Mask.

Tiki masks bring the Hawaiian islands to mind. Drinking cups can be found with a tiki-mask theme. Mount a wooden tiki mask to a wall as art indoors, or use plastic replicas outside.

What Is The Meaning Of Hawaiian Lei Flowers

It is considered rude to refuse the gift of a lei.

Leis have become synonymous in many peoples' minds with Hawaii. Early tourists to the islands were greeted by islanders bearing flowered leis, and in Hawaii they are worn at every festive situation, be it graduation, birthday or wedding. Hawaii also celebrates "Lei Day" every May 1.

History

The wearing of leis is a tradition that came to Hawaii with its earliest Polynesian settlers. In ancient times, leis were worn by people of rank and privilege.

Significance

Traditionally worn as a status symbol by royalty and elite, lei were used in religious ceremonies as well. For example, the Maile lei, a leafy, perfumed vine, was used as a token of peace between warring chiefs. Nowadays, giving a lei is considered a gesture of friendship.

Types

Leis can be closed (tied) or open, and are made of either flowers or leaves. Each of Hawaii's eight major islands has a specific flowered lei associated with it.

Etiquette

Leis are a gesture of friendship, so you should never refuse one. It is also rude to remove one that has been given to you while in the presence of the person who has given it to you. The website Pregancy-Info.net notes that giving a pregnant woman a lei is considered to be bad luck, as it is thought to foretell an umbilical cord wrapped around the unborn child's neck.

Fun Fact

Traditionally, used leis are returned to the earth. Boat tourists in the mid 1900s would throw their leis over the side of the boat into the water while departing the islands.

Simple Easter Dinner Ideas

Easter dinner dishes that are simple to prepare and cook, using inexpensive ingredient,s can be just as delicious as more involved recipes. There are some traditional dishes that many associate with Easter, but the ingredients you choose and the dishes you serve are entirely up to you. You can adapt basic meals with a few extra ingredients and different flavors without any extra expense or difficulty.

Ham

Ham is the traditional Easter meat, but it needn't be plain. People often bake ham with a sweet glaze, and there are infinite simple variations on that idea. You can use brown sugar, honey and maple syrup to glaze a ham, but if you make your own glaze, you can transform the flavors of the meat. Consider adding flavorful ingredients like chopped garlic, lemon juice and rind, chopped nuts or mustard to the glaze. Try reducing wine, balsamic vinegar or soy sauce with sugar, honey or syrup for an interesting twist. Apple sauce and fruit jams make delicious glazes too.

Instead of a whole ham, you could purchase some thick ham steaks, which you can prepare in many different ways. You could coat the steaks in breadcrumbs and bake or fry them, or barbecue or broil them with a sauce. A simple and tasty topping of apple sauce and cheddar cheese on ham steaks is delicious when broiled until golden and bubbling.

Vegetables

Easter dinner usually includes spring vegetables like baby carrots, green beans and asparagus. When the vegetables are fresh, they need little fuss and are delicious simply steamed and topped with a dab of butter and chopped fresh herbs. A different way of cooking vegetables like carrots and onions is to roast them in a low oven for about an hour. They will get toasty edges and the flavors will be sweet and concentrated. Roasted vegetables are good hot or cold, and if coated with a vinaigrette dressing make a great salad dish. If you are celebrating Easter in a warm climate, local spring vegetables may include artichokes and asparagus, which together make a simple but tasty salad.

Desserts

If you make something that you can decorate with frosting, like cookies and cupcakes, your Easter dessert can include appropriate motifs like colorful eggs, chicks and bunnies. You can cut cookie dough into egg shapes with a knife, or you can find Easter-themed cookie cutters in stores.

You can make birds' nest shapes out of a mixture of crushed breakfast cereal, melted chocolate and melted marshmallows. Spread the mixture to the inside of a greased bowl or paper cups, make an indentation in the middle and allow the nest to set. You can make individual nests and place a few small chocolate eggs inside, use them to serve ice cream, or make one large nest and use it as an edible bowl for fresh fruit.

Another idea is to make chocolate truffle eggs. Hand roll spoonfuls of truffle mixture into egg shapes; roll them in powdered sugar, chopped nuts or cocoa powder to coat; and refrigerate. Serve one of each coating to each person as a simple dessert.
