Reception Theme Ideas

Themes affect your reception decor and favor choices.

Themes help structure a wedding reception. They will give you a more complete picture of what you need to plan a successful event. Choosing a theme can be difficult. Decide if you want an elegant evening event or a party that last the whole night through. Settle on a theme that matches this desire and then bring in decorative elements to make it a reality.

Asian Themes

Add elegance and a touch of luxury to your reception with Asian flair. The lucky colors red and black are favored with white---the color of death in Chinese mythos---being avoided. Hang red paper lanterns around the reception area and use plenty of satin and silk-like fabrics on your tables and buffets. Purchase personalized fortune cookies for favors with the happy couples name and wedding date printed on the fortune slips. Use decorative take-out boxes to hold favors. Use copies of dynasty-style vases to hold your blooms or place lucky bamboo on each table as a centerpiece.

Japanese weddings foster a near Zen style simplicity. White and natural colors are preferred. Use miniature Zen sand and rock gardens as centerpieces. Set the table with chopsticks and simple square dishes. A bamboo or reed table runner will complete the mood. Use white paper lanterns and shoji-style lanterns to complete the décor.

Serve Asian-inspired foods for both Chinese and Japanese theme weddings. Place lacquer chopsticks on the tables but make western style silverware available. Serve sushi, Asian noodle dishes and other ethnic fare.

Beach Themes

Even if you live far inland a beach themed reception is an option. Beach themes are best for outdoor receptions--especially if there is a pool at the location.

Evening receptions lend themselves to a romantic beach getaway. Bring the sights of the beach to your tables and centerpieces. Use sand as a filler in clear bowls for centerpiece flowers. Spread shells and beach stones on table tops. Write each guest's name on a sand dollar with a metallic pen for a placecard. Use tropical flowers to complete the mood.

Add a Hawaiian touch with grass skirts hung around the buffet and cake table. Serve drinks in coconut shells or use tropical fruits and picks. A pig roast is a dramatic and memorable meal choice. Other options are seafood or a picnic theme with grilled chicken kabobs and fruit platters.

Mexican Theme

A Mexican fiesta inspired reception is a party to be remembered. Decorate in bright colors---red, orange, yellow and green carry the theme. Hang colorful Mexican cut paper streamers (see Resources) throughout the reception hall or outdoor area. Instead of traditional favors at each table hang one or more piñatas and have guests take turns breaking them open for the treats inside.

Mexican food is a favorite of many people. Serve enchiladas or other Mexican dishes at the table or set up a make-your-own taco and burrito bar for a more casual reception. Place terracotta chip pots as centerpieces with a variety of salsa and guacamole to dip in. Mexican fried ice cream is a tasty treat to serve with the cake.

Bring in a dance floor and a mariachi band to keep the party kicking. Hire a few professional dancers to get the dancing started and show guests the moves. A bar stocked with Mexican beers and tequila will help the party along too.

Tips On Visiting Disney World

Lines can get long for Disney World's most popular rides, like Expedition Everest at the Animal Kingdom.

Disney World is a huge area that consists of four theme parks: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. There are other activities such as water parks and miniature golf, but the theme parks are the main attraction. To make the most of your time at Disney World, you'll want to put together a plan to make sure you can get on the best rides, see the shows, have time to eat and even work in some relaxation.

Timing

Timing is important for maximizing your experience at the Disney World theme parks. Arrive at least half an hour before the park opens. This will give you time to have your bags inspected and join one of the lines to enter the park. The lines at the far ends are usually shorter than those in the middle. Disney parks usually open early. You can walk in up to a rope that closes off the main section of the park. There will usually be a little show or ceremony before the rope is dropped at the designated opening time. Head to the most popular rides first, before the lines get long. You can ride the less popular attractions later in the day, when the park gets more crowded.

FastPasses

FastPasses are a free and convenient way to ride the most popular rides with little or no wait. You can use your theme park ticket to get a FastPass for certain rides. It will be imprinted with an hour time window when you can return and use the special FastPass line to get on the ride almost immediately. You cannot use a FastPass before the time window begins. However, it will almost always be accepted after it ends. You cannot get a another FastPass until the time window for your first one begins or after two hours, whichever occurs first. Get your FastPasses early because they can run out quickly at busy times of the year. For example, in July the FastPasses for Soarin' at Epcot are often gone before noon.

Relaxation

Take relaxation breaks, both inside and outside the theme parks. It's tempting to get as much done as possible at Disney World, but you can quickly exhaust yourself in the Florida heat. Take a break from the rides and go into a long air-conditioned show like the Hall of Presidents in the Magic Kingdom, It's Tough to be a Bug at Animal Kingdom or the American Idol Experience at Disney's Hollywood Studios. If the parks are too crowded and stressful, head back to your hotel for an afternoon swim or rest break. Go back in the evening when some of the crowd will be gone and the temperatures will be a little cooler.

Dining

Save time and money by eating two meals a day instead of three while you are at Disney World. Pack quick breakfast snacks like boxes of cereal or granola bars in your luggage. Eat them before you head out to the theme parks and have a full lunch and dinner. If you want to eat a sit-down meal at a Disney World restaurant and you didn't make advance reservations before your trip, check with Guest Services at any of the theme parks. You can also make reservations at the concierge desk of any of the Disney World hotels. If you cannot get a reservation, go to the restaurant at opening time and see if they will take you as a walk-up.

Unique 25th Birthday Ideas

Unique 25th Birthday Ideas

No longer in her "early twenties," a woman turning smack in between the age of 20 and 30 may crave a birthday celebration and gifts that are more mature than just a night of throwing back jello shots or embarking on a shopping spree with mom and dad's credit cards. This year, do your friend, family member or co-worker a huge favor by treating her like an adult on her birthday, by giving her an exciting, cultured yet memorable birthday to remember. Does this Spark an idea?

Winery Tour

Chances are this 25 year old has had it with keg parties and bar crawls. But if you know he has a taste for fine wine, show him you think he's mature and sophisticated with a trip to a winery. If you live in a state without a winery, take him to a wine bar, for a delicious lunch or dinner filled with wine and food pairings.

Rescue Pet

If she loves animals, nothing will make her grow up faster than taking care of her very own cat or dog. (Be sure to check with her landlord and roommates for permission first.) Head to the local pound, shelter or a rescue group to meet the animals up for adoption. Surprise her on her birthday by handing her the new furry friend.

Charm Bracelet

Charm bracelets are back in style. Head to the jewelry store and hand pick a personalized charm bracelet for the birthday girl. You can spend as little or as much money on this gift as you'd like, by selecting either a sterling silver, gold, white gold or platinum bracelet and charms. Select only a few charms for now, making sure that each one reflects where she is now in her life. Continue to give her a new charm every birthday and she will think of your every time she wears her bracelet.

Event Tickets

Twenty-five-year-olds tend to lead very busy lives as students and young professionals. When a chance presents itself for him to kick back and have fun with his friends, it will be well received. This birthday, give him a pair of tickets to a sporting event, concert, theater production or comedy show you know he'll love. Depending on the locations of the seats, you can spend as little or as much money on this gift as you like.

Unique Lessons

Has the birthday girl or guy always talked about their unrequited dream of figure skating, rock climbing or flying an airplane? Give them the gift of learning by setting them up with several lessons with a trained instructor. He will always remember you as the person who gave him a once in a lifetime experience he'll talk about for birthdays to come. To find an instructor, check your local classifieds.

Tips On "Slingo Supreme"

You can play "Slingo Supreme" on your cell phone.

"Slingo Supreme" can be played on a variety of gaming devices. It can be played on your home computer or on devices such as smart phones, once the game is downloaded. The goal is to remove all 30 squares on your game board, just like in bingo. You get bonus points for removing squares in a row, either vertically, diagonally or horizontally. Removing all the numbered squares from the game board will get you an even larger bonus and win the game.

Match The Numbers Quickly

You can earn bonus points by matching the numbers on the reels with those in the columns as quickly as possible. This bonus increases for each match you make without wasting time. The Gamezebo website indicates your bonus increases for every match you make within two seconds of when the reels stop. This bonus can get up to 1,800 points per match, according to the website, but will reduce if you take more than three seconds to make a match.

Play The Daily Challenge

The daily challenge gives you some of the special powers that you can earn permanently by completing challenges and scoring points. By using these special powers in the daily challenge before you earn them for regular play you can get higher scores in daily challenge, earning those special powers more quickly for the "Slingo Supreme" game to use whenever you wish.

Jokers and Super Jokers

Be careful when using your jokers and super jokers. A joker allows you to choose any square in the column above that reel as a matched number, treating it as a wild card. The super joker allows you to select any number on your game card as a match for using that wild card. If you have both on the reel, the game counts your first click as the one for super joker. If you have only one space left in the column with a joker, don't click on that space first if you have a super joker on the reels as well, because it will render your regular joker useless.

Managing Your Rows

Be careful when using the special powers, jokers, and super jokers for your columns. Try to keep an equal number of spaces remaining in each column to click when possible. If you remove all the numbers from a column and get a joker in that column later in the game, that joker is wasted.

Tips On A Hawaiian Theme Party

Give each guest a lei to wear at your Hawaiian theme party.

Hawaiian parties (sometimes called luau parties) lend themselves to any outdoor party, including pool parties, birthday parties, receptions or even family reunions. This theme works best in the summer, as it mimics the sights, sounds and foods of Hawaii. If you can't throw your party in Hawaii, do the next best thing. Bring the tropical islands to your party with a Hawaiian theme. Does this Spark an idea?

Decorations

Set the stage for a fun time in the tropics by decorating with a Hawaiian feel. If you have real palm trees, decorate them with colorful lights for a festive look. Or, rent blow-up palm trees from a party supply store and set them around the party venue. Line pathways with tiki torches. Make sure they are very sturdy if you are going to light them, however, and keep young children away from the lit torches. Use strips of fake grass to create distinctive table runners. Lean real or cardboard surfboards up against the walls. Colorful silk flower arrangements can also lend a tropical air to your Hawaiian-themed party. Finally, welcome each guest with a traditional lei.

Games and Activities

Get in the spirit of the islands by playing some Hawaiian music and having a hula contest. Use hula hoops, or just ask the guests to try to do the hula dance as best they can. This activity works especially well for younger guests who won't mind getting into the spirit of things. A limbo contest is equally fun. Or, give your guests a souvenir of the party by having them pose for a picture on a surfboard. If you don't have a real surfboard, a decorated ironing board will do. Place it over a blue tarp and ask the guests to give you their best surfer dude pose. Younger children will enjoy a Hawaiian craft. Try making tropical flowers out of tissue paper and attaching them to straw hats.

Food

Serve a "pupu" (Hawaiian for appetizer) platter of fresh fruits and cheeses. Asking your young guests if they would like some "pupu" will be sure to evoke screams of laughter. Set up a bar area, and offer your guests fresh fruit smoothies made to order. Decorate each smoothie with a colorful paper umbrella and a slice of coconut. Or, serve fresh coconut milk in halved coconuts for a novel treat. Pork is a traditional favorite at Hawaiian-themed parties. Try grilling skewers of pieces of pork alternated with chunks of pineapple.

Tips On Advertising A Business

A business survives based on how good its advertising efforts are, and knowing the basics of advertising a business can help raise your revenue. Understanding and executing some popular but effective advertising ideas can help your business get recognized and draw in more customers.

Direct Advertising

A business owner tries to make every moment of his day count, and this includes the slow moments as well. When things are slow, that is the best time to get out and spread the word about your business. Print up fact sheets and get them to people that would have an interest in your business. If you run a delivery business, drop off fact sheets to local businesses that include your pricing and the services you offer. Getting fact sheets printed up is inexpensive, but they could turn your downtime into prime advertising time.

Always be ready to give away a free sample of your product if it is practical to do so. Obviously a car salesman can't give away free samples, but the owner of a deli could give away small samples of the sandwiches it makes to local residents or business owners. If your product is good, investing in free samples could result in big business.

As a form of direct advertisement, consider the value of your location. It may cost a bit more in rent to have your business seen in the modern new plaza conveniently located near your target audience, but that extra rent may be significantly less than the business you would lose if you were not located there. The extra rent may also be significantly less than the advertising costs you would need to incur to get your target audience to come to you in a different location.

Coordinated Effort

These days there is much talk about the power of the Internet and how important it is to advertising a business. While it is true that the Web is a very powerful advertising tool, a good advertising plan uses the Internet along with other mediums to get the message across to customers. While you can get your message out to millions of people inexpensively online, people will be more apt to remember your business if they see newspaper advertising and hear radio advertising to go along with your Internet efforts. A coordinated advertising effort between the Internet and other advertising mediums adds effectiveness to your campaign.

Customer-to-Customer Advertising

Always ask current customers for testimonials that you can use in your advertising. There is a great deal of credibility in seeing a customer's words in your advertising, as opposed to your own words. Try to integrate as much customer praise in your advertising as possible.

Make customers feel confident when they are buying from you by giving them quotes in writing, the warranty on your product in writing, and a money-back guarantee in writing as well. The more credible paper you can allow customers to see, the more comfortable they will feel buying from you and telling others about your company.

Tips For Visiting Disney World With Toddlers

Young children experience the world with a sense of wonder, and the magic of Disney World's four parks can create memories that last a lifetime. But Disney World can overwhelm a toddler, and safety is always a concern with big crowds. Sensible planning can make a visit easier and more enjoyable for you and your child.

Rides and Attractions

Rides that are dangerous for toddlers have height requirements. But you should look out for safe, gentle rides that may not be appropriate for very young children. The Haunted Mansion in the Magic Kingdom, for example, is a physically sedate ride using slow-moving "doom buggies," but make-believe ghosts and the spooky atmosphere might scare your child. Look for attractions with an upbeat theme, such as The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh or the Kilimanjaro Safaris at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Parades and stage shows are also a great option for young kids.

If the adults in your party want to enjoy faster rides, Disney has a "swap program" that allows half the adults to go on a ride while the others wait with the kids, and then the adults switch places.

If you're at a hotel or spa at the resort, keep an eye out for toddler playgrounds with jungle gyms and other equipment--there are several throughout Disney World. Children's Activity Centers at Disney World spas and lodges, provide supervised entertainment for the children while you have some grown-up time.

What to Bring

Disney World involves a lot of walking, and it's wise to bring a stroller. Disney World rents strollers, but the fees are high and the lines to pick one up are often long.

You may want to keep your toddler on a tether or a leash so she can't wander off.

Florida sunshine can be strong, so apply sunscreen and make sure your child's face is protected by a shady hat.

Consider bringing a few simple toys--something you can easily carry in a purse or backpack to keep your child occupied while waiting in lines.

You can bring snacks and water bottles to keep children fed for much less than the cost of food at the park (Disney's Animal Kingdom forbids juice boxes because the little plastic wrappers on the straws can harm animals that swallow them).

When to Go

If you aren't visiting with older children, consider bringing your toddlers during the school year, from September through mid-November or from January through mid-March. Crowds are much smaller then, and it will be easier to enjoy more of the park.

Take breaks during your visit. The sights and sounds can overwhelm toddlers, who may grow fussy if they're carried through the park when they'd prefer a break. You can take a nap in your hotel room during the heat of the day, or rest in a shady corner. It will make for a much more pleasant experience.

Tips For The Grand Floridian

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort is on the monorail route to Magic Kingdom.

The Grand Floridian Resort & Spa at the Walt Disney World Resort (disneyworld.com) is considered to be Disney's flagship resort. Located in the Orlando, Florida area, its elegant Victorian-style architecture was inspired by the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego, California. Its beach on the Seven Seas Lagoon has a great view across the water of Cinderella's Castle in Magic Kingdom, the oldest theme park in Walt Disney World.

Tea Parties

Located on the second floor of the main building, the Garden View Lounge hosts formal tea parties for both adults and children. "Afternoon Tea" is served to adults in the British tradition, complete with scones and other tea fare. In the mornings, girls ages 3 to 11 may attend "My Disney Girl's Perfectly Princess Tea Party" with an adult. Each girl receives a doll and mementos with her tea that "magically tastes like juice," accompanied by fruit and tea sandwiches. The Wonderland Tea Party, held on the first floor of the main building at 1900 Park Fare, offers a "mad" time with Alice and her friends on weekday afternoons. Reservations are required for all tea parties.

Transportation

The Grand Floridian is a stop on the monorail route that services the Polynesian and Contemporary resorts, Magic Kingdom theme park and the Transportation and Ticket Center. You can travel to Magic Kingdom theme park from the Grand Floridian by monorail or by water taxi. When travelling to the Epcot theme park, take the monorail resort route to the Transportation and Ticket Center and transfer to the Epcot monorail route. All other theme parks and water parks are accessible by bus. Direct bus transportation between resorts is not possible -- you must take a bus to Downtown Disney and transfer to a resort hotel bus. You can, however, reach the Polynesian and Contemporary resorts by monorail, and a jogging trail connects the two properties. Transportation to and from the Orlando International Airport is complimentary for resort guests by reservation through Disney's Magical Express.

Fireworks and Live Music

The beach at the Grand Floridian and the boat dock by its signature restaurant, Narcoossee's, have unobstructed views of Magic Kingdom's fireworks show and the Electrical Water Pageant. Some "Lagoon View" rooms have a direct view of the castle so you can sit on your deck and watch the castle changing colors long after the fireworks show. Back in the five-story lobby, a pianist plays the grand piano, alternating sets with The Grand Floridian Society Orchestra performing big band music from the second floor, overlooking the lobby.

Hidden Mickeys

A Hidden Mickey is a subtle image made up of three circles -- one large circle for his head and two smaller circles for his ears. Disney Imagineers blend this logo into their designs and Disney fans enjoy hunting for them. Mickey is hidden in the fleur-de-lis pattern of tiles on the floor of the second level, the metal braces on the shelves at the check-out counter at Gasparilla Grill & Games, on the back of the grand piano, on the lute at Victoria & Albert's and outside on the weather vanes. Guests at the Wedding Pavilion can find Hidden Mickeys on the metal grates covering the air vents and on the rumps of horses that transport the bride and groom in the Cinderella Carriage horse train.

Tips For Disney World In Florida

Going to Disney World in Florida, whether you're traveling with adults or children, may seem like an exciting yet overwhelming task. To make the most of your trip, it helps to consider some tips regarding everything from accommodations to standing in lines. Adhering to some advice can help you make the most of your trip while avoiding as many potential problems as possible.

Get a Multi-Day Pass

Buying individual tickets to each park could total up to quite a bit of money, especially if you're paying for several people. There are quite a few ticket options available for purchase in different increments or days and according to age, so avoid paying more than necessary. If you live in Florida, take advantage of the special discounts for residents. Carefully calculate, review and weigh the pros and cons of each option before purchasing.

Go in the Off-Season

During peak season, you may end up spending much more and enduring more headaches and problems than if you go during the low season. When kids are in school is the best time of year to go and when they are on vacation can be the most problematic. One of the best times to go to Disney World is typically during the first few weeks of December and one of the worst is usually during the summer. During peak times, you may find longer lines, higher prices and huge crowds. The off-season may allow for a speedier and more enjoyable trip through the parks.

Skip the Expensive, Upscale Hotels

Although the upscale hotels are nice, they're also expensive and chances are you're not going to be in it very long. You're probably going to be walking around Disney World's parks all day and by the time you get back to the hotel, it's likely that you'll just want to sleep. Consider staying in a good hotel that's more reasonably priced and preferably located close to Disney World.

Participate in a Disney Character Breakfast

If you're going with children, they may want to try to get pictures and autographs from their favorite characters, which means stopping several times throughout the park to do so. Doing the character breakfast in the first day or two of your trip will provide the opportunity to have breakfast and allow your child to get autographs and pictures from many characters all in one place. Reservations are required; book it as early as possible to prevent it being at capacity.

Use a Stroller

If you're traveling with kids, especially during warm weather, they're likely to get tired, cranky and not want to keep walking, which means you may end up carrying them. Skip the hassle from the beginning and bring a stroller or rent one there. The stroller is also handy for hanging bags so you don't have to carry them.

Check Height Requirements

Although they have height requirements posted at the front of the ride and sometimes at the very beginning where the line typically starts, you may forget to check them to know if your child meets those requirements. Also, if the line is incredibly long, you could be standing in line quite a while before getting to the start point where the information is posted. When arriving at each ride, check the requirements first before getting in line so you don't waste time only to find out your child can't go on.

Tips For Disney Meal Plans

The Disney dining plan offers special meals for children.

Walt Disney World offers guests the option of adding a meal plan to their room and ticket package. As of January 2011, Disney offers six different dining plan options, ranging from the basic counter-service dining plan to the elaborate platinum and premium packages that provide you with a range of dining credits that can be used at Disney restaurants. Knowing about the types of packages, when to make reservations and other plan details is important when planning a trip to Disney with the dining plan.

Consider Your Family's Needs

Disney requires that all people sharing a room must be on the same dining plan, for the same number of nights. Before booking the dining plan for your trip, research the different dining plans and consider your family's dining needs. The least expensive dining option is the quick-service dining plan, offering two snacks and two meals at a counter service restaurant per day and one refillable mug, good at your hotel, per person. More expensive options include meals at table service restaurants, special dining experiences and other benefits depending on the plan selected. All of the Disney dining plans offer reduced pricing for children under nine years of age. Children under three are not required to purchase the plan and may eat off of an adult plate for no additional charge.

Make Reservations Early

Disney allows reservations to be made for its table service restaurants 180 days in advance, both online and over the phone. Popular dining spots, such as Cinderella's Royal Table, character dining and Le Cellier in EPCOT often book quickly. Plan your trip in advance and make your reservations as soon as possible to ensure your first choice restaurants are available.

Account for Extra Expenses

Not all expenses are included in your dining package. If your dining plan includes meals at table service restaurants, you must pay gratuity on your own. In addition, some plan options, such as the basic dining plan, do not include appetizers in the package cost. These items and additional snacks or side items as well as alcoholic or specialty drinks must be paid for out of pocket. In addition, if a child on the children's plan wishes to order from the adult menu, the meal must be paid for outside of the dining plan.

Track Your Credits

Each time you purchase a meal or snack with your dining plan, you are given a receipt that notes how many dining credits you have left. Keep track of your credits to ensure you have enough credits for all of the meals and snacks you have planned during your trip and that you use them all before your vacation is over. While you purchase the plan for each person staying in your room, the receipt tells you how many total credits you have left, not the number of meals or snacks available for each person.

Tips For Decorating A Cake With Flowers

Decorate a cake with colorful, fresh flowers.

Add a touch of natural beauty to any cake with fresh flowers. Decorate a wedding cake with flowers matching the bride's bouquet, or top a Valentine's day cake with red roses. Best of all, you don't need any cake decorating skills or piping techniques when using fresh flowers although some cake supplies may make the task a little easier.

Choose Your Flowers

Select organic, pesticide free flowers to decorate your cake. This eliminates the possibility of chemicals being transferred to the cake and ingested by your guests. Look for organic flowers in grocery stores and whole food stores. If you purchase the flowers through a florist, specify that they are for use on food and cannot have pesticides. The University of Florida recommends only using edible flowers but Martha Stewart says that using inedible flowers is possible if you take certain precautions. You must arrange the inedible flowers so that they do not touch the cake. Accomplish this by covering the top of the cake with a layer of clear acetate before arranging the flowers.

Sugar Edible Flowers

Add a little sweetness and sparkle to edible flowers on your cake with a sugary coating. Sugaring flowers is as simple as brushing the blossoms gently with a beaten egg white and sprinkling superfine sugar over the flower. Layer the flowers on a baking sheet or a piece of wax paper and allow them to dry overnight. The next morning, each flower will have a sweet and stiff coating. Do not apply this coating to inedible flowers as it may encourage your guests to sample them.

Flower Spikes

Flower spikes, flower holders and flower cups are all small containers used to hold fresh flowers on your cake. Place the flower stem into a flower spike and push it into the cake to secure it. You can even add a small amount of water to the flower spike to prevent wilting. Flower holders come in a variety of shapes and sizes including rings and bowls. Flower cups resemble tiny cups and hold flowers without attached stems.

Keep Them Fresh

Martha Stewart recommends decorating your cake with fresh flowers one to two hours before serving. In the meantime, store the flowers in a vase with water to keep them looking fresh until it is time to add them to the cake. Of course, you can apply sugared flowers to the cake as soon as they dry. Do not store them in water or the sugar will be rinsed away.

Timeshares In Seattle Washington

The Space Needle and Seattle's waterfront are close to Seattle's urban timeshare.

Few timeshares, with the exception of Orlando, Florida, are located in large cities. The majority of timeshares may be found in vacation areas, close to oceans, lakes and mountains. Seattle, Washington, a city built on hills and surrounded by water, as of June 2011 has one timeshare located in the city center. Several other timeshares appear at beaches and mountains surrounding Seattle.

WorldMark Camlin

Tiki Party Ideas

Use leis as favors and decorations for a tiki party.

According to the website Thatsthespirit.com, the tiki theme is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Originally, recognition of the decor emerged in the 1930's with the establishment of a restaurant by Don the Beachcomber and the California restaurant Trader's Vic. In the 1950s through the 1970s tiki themes began appearing once more. Tiki-themed parties incorporate the tropics, luaus, and, of course, the images of the carved tikis. Does this Spark an idea?

Decorations

There is an abundance of party decorations available to use that will create the tropical spirit of a tiki party. Bright, tropical colored paper lanterns, paper flower garland, crepe paper streamers, paper leis, tablecloths, and large paper flowers are easy and inexpensive to use for decorating your tiki party. Use grass skirts to surround the sides of tables and make or buy imitation palm trees. Lighting should be dim, unless your party is outside during the day. Tiki torches, twinkle lights strung in trees, and candles, both large chunky ones and small tealights floating in colored water will create a tropical atmosphere for your tiki party.

Activities

Limbo contests, hula hoop contests, and simple lessons in hula dancing keeps your tiki party interesting and active. Other activities can be a pinata, shaped in a tropical motif like a sun, palm tree, or tiki. A game that is similar to hot potato and called pass the coconut is frequently played at tropical theme parties. If you have the space, set up a volleyball net and play a game or two of beach volleyball.

Food & Drink

Barbecuing is a natural part of tiki-themed parties. Large cuts of pork and easy-to-nibble skewers filled with meats, vegetables and fruits are easy to manage from the grill. Hollowed out melons filled with fruit salad or skewers filled with pineapple, melons, papaya, and kiwi carry out your tiki theme. Serve drinks in tiki or tropical-themed glasses; or place a colorful paper umbrella in each drink glass to add to the festivities.

Tiki Party Games For Kids

Kids love beach themes.

Tiki- or luau-themed parties are perfect for summer birthdays or for adding warmth to a winter birthday. Decorate your home or backyard with palm fronds, serve beverages in half-coconuts (either plastic or real) and hang up comical wooden or plastic tiki masks. Cover walls or outline backyard property lines with brightly colored tropical tapestries and strings of flowers. You can also hand out leis for the boys and tropical silk flower hair clips for the girls as favors when everyone goes home. And to get everyone into the island party mood, there are many tiki-themed party games you can play both indoors and out.

Hula-Dancing

Hire a local hula instructor or get an instructional DVD, available at RealHula.com (see Resources). Use the DVD to learn some moves yourself and teach the kids. Allow the children to create their own dances and make up their own hula moves. Stand in a circle around each child as they combine or create steps and see who can keep up the best with each teacher.

Wet Sponge Dodgeball

This game is best played outdoors for summertime parties. Have all the guests wear bathing suits and get a bunch of very large sponges and some buckets of water. Divide the guests into two teams. Line up a few buckets on either side of your yard and ask the children to soak their sponges. On the count of three, tell them to throw their sponges at one another. Anyone who gets hit with a sponge must go to "jail" and can only be let out if someone catches a sponge and throws it to him. Let the kids steal players from each other this way. You can also create a no man's land where no one can enter to pick up extra sponges.

Island Travel

This game is ideal for outdoor, warm-weather parties. Cut out several large cardboard "islands." You can paint them with palm trees, tropical flowers, animals and surfboards. Place them in the yard several feet apart to make the jumping a challenge and get each child to hop from island to island without touching the ground in between. Arm the rest of the kids with water balloons, squirt guns or soaked sponges. If the hopping child lands on the ground, the other kids are allowed to get him wet until he reaches the next island, simulating a fall into the ocean. Let each child try at least once.

Tiki Party Decorations

Tiki photo by Smudgie's Ghost

A tiki party brings visions of sunny beaches and hula skirts. It is a fun theme for a summer party. If done right, the party can also be set up indoors to brighten up the winter. Cups and plates can have a tropical theme to them. Place tiki torches, surf boards and boogie boards around the area. Decorate the table with ukuleles and cut pineapples. Serve tropical-flavored cupcakes decorated with shredded coconut and fruit-flavored punch. Does this Spark an idea?

Tiki Centerpiece

For a large centerpiece, create a tube out of cardboard. Make it as tall and as wide around as you want. Secure the edges with strong tape or staples. Fasten a piece of cardboard to the bottom. Next, cover it with dark brown paper. Use paint to decorate the tiki. Do not forget to paint the face. Cut the mouth hole and place small rocks inside. Add enough weight so the tiki doesn't tip over. Attach a piece of red paper for the tongue. Place a small speaker inside the tiki and pipe Hawaiian music through the giant tiki.

Tiki Hut

No tiki party is complete without a tiki hut. Start with a square or rectangular table. Fasten four tall bamboo poles to the corners. Build a frame on top of these poles. Take some grass shirts and cut them in half. Layer these on the top frame to form a grass roof. Wrap the poles in strings of lights or flower garlands. Find a tropical print piece of cloth that fits over the table. The material needs to drape to the ground on all sides. You may have to create slits in the material at the four corners to accommodate the bamboo poles.

Leis

Flower garlands or leis are a traditional part of a luau. It is simple to create these garlands out of string and colored paper. Cut the strings into 3-foot lengths. Cut several abstract flower shapes, about 2 inches in diameter, out of brightly colored paper. Using a needle, thread the string through the center of the cut-out flower. Fill half the string. Tie the string ends in a knot. Move one blossom down the string then crumple the next blossom before moving it down the string. You should have a pattern of one plain flower and one crumpled flower around the string. This puffs up the flowers. Once done, you have a paper lei. This is an inexpensive gift to give to partygoers and they last for a long time as long as they do not get wet.

Tiki Party Decorating Ideas

Tiki statues can be used as decorations at tiki parties.

Tiki parties offer outdoor fun and a festive atmosphere. Guests typically enjoy tiki parties because they feel as though they are entering a relaxing getaway complete with grass skirts and tiki torches. If you are considering having a tiki party, know that with just a few accents, you can transform your venue into an island-inspired party. Does this Spark an idea?

Decorations

Tiki parties are not complete without tiki torches. Scatter a few torches around your yard or venue and you will instantly evoke an island feel. To add more island fun, greet your guests at the door with leis. Hang fishnets from ceilings and doorways and ask that your guest come dressed in island attire, suggests the Paradise Found Online website. Fill an inflatable child's pool with ice and drinks. Purchase small tiki statues and island cups and plates at your local party store. To top it off, line your tables with grass skirts. Place fish, bird and palm tree balloons around your venue, along with tropical fruit, such as pineapples, used as decoration. Sprinkle some sand on the tables and bar and use clear, glass bowls that feature goldfish as the centerpieces.

Food

You can't have a tiki party without a few fruity frozen drinks available. Fire up the blender and offer your guests pina coladas, mai tais, strawberry daquaris, hurricanes and other fun cocktails. Arrange an assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with foods that are reminiscent of the island, such as shish kabobs or coconut chicken skewers. Grilled coconut shrimp, deviled eggs and crab canapes also make for delicious tiki party fare, suggests the Theme Parties 'N' More website. If you want to include your guests in the menu decision, ask that they each bring an island-inspired entree to the party.

Games

To get everyone in the tiki mood, be sure to include a few games in the party. Perhaps the most well-known tropical party game is the limbo. Award island-inspired prizes to the guests who can go the lowest. Hire a hula expert to give hula-dancing lessons, or have a hula hoop contest. You could also have a singing or dancing contest that features tropical music. Hang island-themed pinatas around your venue and fill them with tropical prizes, such as dried coconut or pineapple. Use your imagination and have fun when deciding which games and activities to feature at your tiki party.

Tiki Hut Decorations

Tiki Hut Decorations

Tiki hut decorations are reminiscent of an actual tiki hut, which is usually round or square in shape with a thatched roof supported by wooden beams. The style of the tiki hut is implemented into party themes as well as displayed in an actual tiki hut or tiki hut bar that one may already have in place in their basement or backyard. By adding tiki hut accessories to the tiki-inspired location, one creates a warming ambiance that is sought after by those who crave tropical design and flair. Does this Spark an idea?

Significance

A tiki hut is a small hut or shelter originating from Africa that served as a safe haven for tribal members to rest in and keep themselves safe from weather elements and danger. Over the course of thousands of years, the tiki hut has gained popularity as being a sign or symbol of an oasis or place of relaxation in which one can find refuge from the real world and seek food, drink and social interaction. Many choose tiki hut decorations for both their backyard parties as well as to decorate their personal space by creating a tiki hut theme. Tiki hut decorations are admired by people of all ages including children who admire the interesting tiki faces as well as the colorful accessories found throughout the decorations. Tiki hut decorations are a popular theme and can be found at most craft stores as well as online stores.

Features

Tiki hut decorations are not just limited to small thatched roof structures held together by bamboo or wood. There are a lot of accessories that make the tiki hut a welcoming sight. Some must-haves for creating a theme or adding to the tiki hut are things such as tiki masks, tiki man statues, dried reeds, palms and ornamental grasses, fake parrots, fake or live potted palm trees, fishnets, plastic sea animals such as lobsters, shrimps and conch shells, wind chimes and rope garland. These items can be placed around the tiki hut for added flair as well as decorating a party space.

Types

There are two different types of decorations for a tiki hut, real decorations or paper and plastic cut out to resemble real decorations. Many plastic and paper decorations can be bought cheaply and tossed out or even recycled after a party. Many paper tiki hut decorations are made out of raffia and tissue paper and can be sent home with party guests as favors. Wooden tiki hut decorations such as masks, sea animals, and even chairs can be more expensive than paper or plastic decorations. Some decorations can be bought at lawn and garden stores as as well as custom-made by local artisans.

Effects

With tiki hut decorations, one can easily create a tiki oasis geared to making guests feel like they are on the beach or in a real live tiki bar. By adding decorations such as the tiki men statues and masks, potted palm trees, bamboo and dried coconuts, the decorations will give off the effect of being in a real tiki hut. Christmas lights or decorative outdoor lights lining the edge of the hut give off a sense of tropical flair. Island music by Jimmy Buffet as well as reggae sounds from Bob Marley create an ambiance reminiscent of the tropics amid the tiki hut decorations.

Warning

If decorating a real tiki hut, realize that the hut is most likely made out of dried plant material such as bamboo, rope and ornamental grasses, thus having open flames nearby is not recommended. Tiki torches should be kept a considerable distance from the hut as well as any structural dwelling to prevent a fire. Paper tiki hut decorations and accessories such as garlands and table settings, should also be kept away from candles and open flames at all times. A fire extinguisher near the tiki hut or party area is a safe bet.

Things To Know Before Filing For Bankruptcy In Hawaii

Both state and federal laws apply to your Hawaii bankruptcy filing. Qualifying for bankruptcy can be easier in Hawaii than in other states, because the average income and expenses that are used to determine your eligibility are relatively high. Hawaii has only one bankruptcy district, with courts located in Honolulu, Hilo, Wailuku and Lihue (see Resources).

You Can Choose Your Chapter

Bankruptcy is generally a voluntary process. If you are a Hawaii debtor overwhelmed by debt, you can choose the chapter you want to file, as long as you qualify. If you can afford to pay your creditors, the court will only allow you to file Chapter 13 bankruptcy, which involves a repayment plan. With sufficiently low income, you can file Chapter 7, but you must be prepared to turn over any assets that the courts deem to be non-exempt.

Hawaii Has Eight Exemption Categories

If you file Chapter 7 bankruptcy, Hawaii offers eight categories of assets that you can keep. Categories include pensions, public benefits, wages, insurance, personal property, tools of trade and miscellaneous. Hawaii allows you to keep up to $20,000 in value in a homestead. This amount is increased to $30,000 if you are over 65 or the head of a household. If your property is registered as tenants by the entirety, you have an unlimited homestead exemption, to the extent of the debts of one spouse. In a tenancy by the entirety, which can only be created by a married couple, each owner has a legal right to the entire property but needs the consent of the other owner to sell an interest in the property.

Hawaii Has A High Median Income

You must use the median income in Hawaii to determine if you qualify for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Since Hawaii is an expensive state in which to live, the median income in Hawaii is higher than in many other states. For example, the median income for a family of two in Hawaii is $63,143, while the median income for a family of two in Kentucky is only $44,353. As a result, you can have a higher annual income in Hawaii and qualify for Chapter 7 than you could in many other states, including Kentucky. The U.S. Trustee publishes an updated list of state median incomes regularly. You can compute your annual income for bankruptcy purposes using Bankruptcy Form 22A for comparison (see Resources).

Hawaii Has High Average Expenses

Another way to qualify for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Hawaii is to subtract allowable expenses from your income. Since Hawaii has high average expenses, you can take greater deductions for qualification purposes than in many other states. For example, the maximum monthly allowance for the housing and utilities for a family of two in Honolulu County is $2,426. By way of comparison, the same allowance in Modoc County, California is just $970.

Water Games & Activities For Kid'S Birthday Parties

A water party is great summer fun.

Summer usually means hot weather, and a great way to beat the heat is with a birthday party full of water activities. Swimming pools are great, but not necessary for a fun-filled birthday celebration with a luau, beach or other water theme. With a little planning and a few supplies, your water-themed birthday party can be the best party of the summer. Does this Spark an idea?

Musical Sprinkler Freeze

All you need for this simple game is a hose and sprinkler. Play some fun music, such as the Beach Boys, while participants dance and pose. When the music stops, players freeze and the sprinkler is turned on. Players must stay frozen until the music begins again and the water is turned off. Anyone who moves before then is out of the game. The last player left wins.

The Splat Game

For this game, you need a flat surface, water balloons, chalk and a measuring tape. Each player holds his balloon over his head and throws it on the flat surface. Use the chalk to outline the splash while it is still wet, then compare outlines after everyone has had a turn. Use the measuring tape for splashes close in size. The biggest splash is the winner.

Sponge Relays

Sponge relays can be played two different ways. Both versions require a big sponge and a bucket filled with water for each team. The first version also requires an empty bucket. Team members race to the full bucket, fill the sponge with water and run back to start. The first member of each team squeezes the sponge into her team's empty bucket, then passes the sponge to the next player. The first team to fill their empty bucket wins.

Alternatively, team members run to the water-filled bucket and soak the sponge with water. Then they squeeze the water onto their heads and run back to pass the sponge to the next person in line. The team that finishes first wins the game.

Spraychestra

This game takes a little more planning. Tie a rope or clothes line between two poles or trees. Hang trash can lids, plastic buckets, cups, wind chimes and other items likely to make noise when hit with a spray of water. Players use either a hose with a spray nozzle or water guns to hit the items and make "music."

Crossing the River

This is the only game that actually requires a swimming pool. Use rope to tie two parallel lines across the length of the pool. Divide the players into two teams and give each team an inflatable raft. Divide each team in half and station one half at each end of the pool. Each team member must stand in the raft and pull herself along the rope to the other side of the pool, switching places with the next team member. First team with all members crossing the pool once is declared the winner.

Tiki Birthday Themes

Think of creative ways to serve food at your party.

A tiki-themed birthday party is a way to bring the tropics to wherever you are. Your friends and family will likely be anticipating the celebration the moment they receive the invitations. There are multiple ways you can incorporate this theme, whether you are decorating, picking the menu for the party or setting up lively activities that will have everyone dancing the night away. Does this Spark an idea?

Invitations

Invitations that look like a tiki statue are a natural choice for your tiki-themed party. Invitations in the shape of an exotic drink, a surfboard or a bright flower would all work, as well. As soon as your guests see the invites, they'll know they're in for a tropical birthday party. Be sure to include any special requests you have for your guests (such as attire) and if you'd like them to RSVP.

Atmosphere

For your tiki-themed party, decorate with items such as plates, centerpieces and tiki statues. Decorate tables with bamboo runners. Palm trees or plants will add an exotic feel to the party. For centerpieces, consider small vases with lotus blooms or any bright flower. If your party is outdoors, set up lots of tiki torches. As guests arrive, make them feel as though they have entered an island paradise. Adorn them with a lei and, for the more adventurous, a grass skirt. Play some Hawaiian or reggae music to keep everyone in the mood all night long.

Food and Drink

When preparing for the party, be sure to have cuisine and beverages that fit the theme. Whether it's frozen-fruit drinks or tropical flavored punch, serve your drinks in bright glasses, fake coconuts or cups decorated as tikis. Top with fruit garnishes and a paper umbrella. Serve drinks at a makeshift tiki bar. Cut up fruit such as cantaloupe, strawberries and pineapple and serve with other appetizers such as coconut and ginger cream cheese balls. For the main course serve honey-barbecued chicken, coconut shrimp or beef teriyaki. If you want a nontraditional birthday cake, make a pineapple upside-down cake. Macaroons and macadamia nut cookies are nice additions as well.

Entertainment

As the night goes on you may want to have some activities planned. Set up an area where guests can compete in a limbo contest. Pass out prizes for those who bend as low as they can go. Have a hula dance-off where guests can shimmy the night away. For an activity that will get everyone twirling, set up a Hula-Hoop competition. Some hilarious moments are sure to occur, so be ready with your camera.

Tiki bars welcome patrons with the illusion of a Polynesian beach paradise and an almost unlimited supply of sweet, umbrella-bearing alcoholic beverages. Tiki torches, palm trees and blowfish hanging from the ceiling create a laid-back, campy atmosphere. Tiki enthusiasts will appreciate the original carved art by the renowned Tiki Bosco. The drinks menu grades alcohol content on a scale of one to five skulls. The adventurous may struggle with standing after downing the five-skull "Green Gasser." The party never stops, as Frankie's is open 24 hours, seven days a week.

Throwing A Couple'S Wedding Shower

A couples bridal shower lets the guys in on the fun.

Although wedding showers are traditionally for women only, modern brides have started to embrace their fiance's being a part of the bridal shower festivities, opting to have a couple's shower. If you are hosting the shower, you can't just plan a typical shower and invite the groom and his friends. From the invitation to the activities, the shower needs to embrace the guys and make both women and men feel welcome and included in an event that is celebrating the relationship of a couple everyone invited cares about.

Instructions

1. Select a theme. A gender neutral theme will make the guys more comfortable about attending a bridal shower. A backyard barbecue is a safe bet for a co-ed shower. You could also come up with a theme based on things that the couple of honor like to do together, such as going to the movies, a particular sport or travel. Base the decorations around the theme.

2. Send out invitations that make it clear the shower is for both men and women. Avoid sending out pink, frilly invitations. Choose a neutral color such as tan or beige for the invitation. Use a graphic for the card that emphasizes both the man and the woman, such as his and her coffee cups or two beach chairs, depending on your theme. Word the invitation to emphasize that the shower is for the couple, not just the woman. For example, you could write, "Please Join Leslie and Tom for a couple's shower in their honor."

3. Keep decor gender neutral for a couples wedding shower and focus on the theme. For a sports themed wedding shower, decorate in colors of a favorite team the couple roots for. For a barbecue bridal shower, cover tables with red checkered picnic tables and place wildflowers in a glass jar. You could also place toy barbecue tools in a metal tin as centerpieces as well. Decorate the party space with balloons that match the theme hanging from the ceiling or attached to chairs if the party is outside. Another idea is to have different pictures of the couple at every table.

4. Base food around the theme of the party. A barbecue bridal shower will obviously have barbecue food such as burgers, hot dogs, and corn on the cob on the menu. A sports-themed shower can have food typically served at a Super Bowl party such as chili and wings. You can also serve the favorite foods of the couple. Include both fruit cocktails and hearty beer options. Include desserts, but avoid overly girly kinds, such as petit fours or pink-frosted cupcakes.

5. Play games that involve everyone. One idea is to play the newlywed game, where the bride and groom are separately asked a set of questions about the other. Each party guest can get a turn asking one of the questions to the couple. You can also turn the questions on the guests to see how well they know the couple. Another idea is to have everyone write down something funny or a funny memory about the couple. The couple takes turns reading a note and trying to guess who said it. Guys like competition so set up some silly competitive games such as "dress the bride." Divide the men and women into two teams and set up a game where team members must race to a specific spot, put on the bridal clothing, run back to his team, take it off and dress the other member of his team, who must run back to the other side, take dress off and dress the other team member. The first team to get all of their team members dressed and undressed wins.

Throwing An Outdoor Gettogether

Guests can build their own shish kebabs.

Outdoor party season begins with the first warm days of spring. Don't just be content to merely attend parties this year; hold your own outdoor get-together. Your party can be as simple as having a few friends over for a cookout or as elegant as a garden cocktail party. The possibilities are limited only by your space and the budget. Does this Spark an idea?

Theme

Throw a simple backyard barbecue or plan a theme party. Examples of themes that lend themselves well to backyard get-togethers are Polynesian luaus, a garden party, an English tea or an evening under the stars. Themes aren't necessary, but they distinguish your party from the other backyard get-togethers that your guests attend throughout the year, and they add an element of novelty. Themes work especially well if your guests are close friends or share your sense of fun.

Organizing Seating

Outdoor parties work only if you have adequate seating. Bring indoor furniture outside or rent tables and chairs. If the guests can't sit, they won't be comfortable, especially if they are forced to stand while they eat. Place tablecloths over the tables and slipcovers over the chairs to give a varied collection of furniture a uniform look. You can purchase plastic-coated tablecloths or inexpensive slipcovers at your local discount or party store.

Menus

Plan a menu that lends itself to outdoor eating, fits the needs of your guests, works with your budget and complements the theme of your party. If you plan an outdoor luncheon with an English tea theme, for example, serve the guests traditional fare such as cucumber or watercress sandwiches. For a luau, serve grilled pork with pineapple slices. If your get-together doesn't have a theme, you can still make the event memorable by serving a more interactive meal such as a build-your-own fajita or kebab bar or by preparing and serving a roast pig.

Invitations

The invitations should be as fun as your get-together. Get creative and make your own invitations instead of having them printed. Press flowers and glue them onto card stock for a high tea or roll the invitations into tubes and tie them with strips of bandannas for a down-home look that is perfect for a barbecue. Alternately, get even more creative with your invitations by taping the invitation to a small gift that fits the theme, such as a pinwheel for a picnic theme or a champagne glass for a garden party.

Thrifty Mom Birthday Party Ideas

Thrifty birthday parties can be just as much fun as expensive events.

Birthday party ideas can be as extravagant or as affordable as you choose. Don't feel locked out of a great birthday party just because you're a mom on a budget. Finding ways to save on everything can be rewarding, as well as thrifty. Enjoy saving money and throwing a memorable birthday party for your child with invitations, decorations, entertainment and a tasty cake that won't break your bank account. Does this Spark an idea?

Invitations

Create designer invitations with a computer program.

Virtual birthday party invitations are more creative than paper invitations. Use a computer software program to design your own invites. Send them by email. If you don't feel comfortable designing your own invitations, send free electronic invitations (see Resources). Websites often offer a variety of free birthday invitations. Request a reply by a specific date. Prepare your shopping list from the list of responses. Verify in advance that everyone on your list uses email. Send e-invitations to parents if the guests are young children or need an adult's permission.

Decorations

Use such traditional and thrifty decorations as balloons and streamers.

Buy decorations at a dollar or discount store. Decorate your child's birthday party with colorful balloons, bright streamers and an expandable "Happy Birthday" sign. Use unbreakable dishes you already own. Place birthday party favors--such as stickers, noise makers and party hats--at each child's place.

Entertainment

Devise games for children to play at a birthday party.

Keeping the kids amused will rank high on your list. If you live near a park with playground equipment, take the kids there for a birthday party "field trip." Play such games as kickball, Red Rover or hide and seek. Hold short relay races or three-legged races. Put a spin on traditional games. Turn "Duck, Duck, Goose" into "Spider-Man, Spider-Man, Green Goblin" for a boy and "princess, princess, knight" for a girl. Bring a basket with cookies and juice boxes for snacks. Bring toys from a dollar store for prizes. Ask a friend to help you supervise. When you arrive back home, play a game with a piñata.

Birthday Cake

Make a delicious and affordable birthday cake.

Skip the expensive bakery and make the cake yourself. Buy a package mix or make the cake from scratch. Decorate the cake with a theme from your child's favorite movie or game. If your daughter, for example, is a Hannah Montana fan, decorate her cake with edible Hannah Montana cake images. Such images cost less than $10, as of March 2010.

Thrifty Creative Home Decorating Ideas

Thrifty home decor includes figuring out your style.

Decorating and arranging your home is a personal reflection of your personality, tastes, styles and outlook. The ability to express your feelings and personality in your home surroundings is an art and a talent that's not difficult or expensive to develop. Start by knowing your design style, whether it's southwestern, Victorian, traditional, eclectic, contemporary or some other unique style. From that base you can plan your space, colors and accessories within your decorating budget. Does this Spark an idea?

Figure Out Your Style

Before making any decorating plans, sit down and think about your personality, your preferences and your dislikes. Jot down a list of things you are drawn to, such as the clean, spare look of Japanese interiors or the rugged, rustic natural look of southwestern decor. Go to the library for a couple of weeks and read books and magazines about decorating, design and home decor. Once you know your style, you have a blueprint for your decorating scheme and can look for used and sale items that match your style on your budget.

Make a List

Whether you are starting from scratch to decorate a whole house or just have one room to complete, make a list of the items you need to do the job. Put it on the refrigerator or on the bathroom mirror and keep a copy in your purse or wallet so you can take advantage of sales when you are out. Staying organized in home decorating projects helps you stay within your budget and get the most for your time and money.

Become a Sale Junkie

For home decorating projects on a small budget, you need a strategy. The more department store sales, garage sales, thrift shops and rummage sales you go to, the more opportunities you'll have to find what you need for your decorating projects. Plan to go to two to three sales per week and watch the sales ads for your favorite retailers so you know when they have big sales. Make a contract with yourself to never buy anything at full price.

Use Color

Make the most of your decorating budget with good use of color. A can of paint changes the whole look and feel of the room by changing the color on the walls. Use one accent color in a room with a neutral or white backdrop. Or, use a light color on the walls and a little darker shade of the same color for a large piece of furniture, like a couch or easy chair, to create the look and feel you want on a budget.

Avoid Clutter and Set Limits

Avoid clutter and overfilling your space with decor. Instead, visualize the look and feel of the space. Write down what you want to use to create it and resist the urge to use too many things. Limit what you use to decorate your space and spend your decorating money on a few key pieces that you use with light and color to create the style you want.

Things You Need To Honeymoon In Hawaii

Hawaii is known for being a romantic getaway for newlyweds.

Honeymooning in Hawaii is a great way to celebrate your wedding. Hawaii is known for being a romantic getaway that provides its visitors with a plethora of recreational activities. The climate is tropical, and the temperature ranges from 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit year round. When preparing for a honeymoon in Hawaii several items are essential to ensure a fantastic getaway.

Pack Appropriate Clothing

To enjoy Hawaii, packing appropriate clothing is a must. A variety of shorts, t-shirts, sandals and tank tops can make sightseeing more comfortable. If you just want to stay close to the hotel, packing a couple of swimsuits would be a great idea to relax by the swimming pool.

Newlyweds who enjoy wearing white should take caution. Hawaii is known for its red dirt throughout the islands, which could stain white articles of clothing. White shoes especially should be avoided.

If you plan on exploring the island's volcanoes, take long sleeve pants and shirts, as temperatures can drop into the 30's when reaching the volcano's summit.

Although the majority of dress codes throughout the island are casual, some fancy dining restaurants require a stricter dress code. For newlyweds, a romantic dinner in Hawaii is a must, so be sure to pack one set of dress clothes.

Pack With the Sun in Mind

Since Hawaii honeymoons will entail hours of relaxing in the sun or exploring famous attractions around the island, don't forget to take care of your skin. The sun's rays are stronger in Hawaii because of its nearness to the equator, so packing sunblock, sun screen and skin moisturizer is a great idea, as is packing a pair of 100 percent UV protective sunglasses.

Don't Forget the Camera

Sharing your honeymoon with close friends and family members is expected upon your return. Taking a compact camera that can snap shots of Hawaii and your adventures will be a great way to keep the memory of your honeymoon alive.

Things To See In Batangas

Batangas is located in the Philippines.

Batangas is a province located in the southwestern part of Luzon, in the Philippines. The region offers an escape from busy city life of Manila, featuring pristine beaches and excellent dive sites. The seas around Batangas host over half of the world's species of coral reefs. Most of the people of Batangas speak Tagalog, but English is widely spoken and understood.

Lake Taal

Lake Taal is a freshwater lake located about an hour from Manila in Batangas. The lake features the active Taal volcano; the world's smallest, on an island in the middle of the lake. Lake Taal is the deepest lake in the Philippines and was once named Bombon Lake. Because of the high sulfuric acid content, no fish live in the deep waters there, though fish farms exist in more shallow water. Boats are available to take passengers to the volcanic crater, and a hike to the crater will reward you with outstanding views.

Matabunkay Beach

Mantabunkay Beach offers an inexpensive escape for tourists from the big city. Plenty of sunshine, swimming and a beautiful sunset bring families back each season. Visitors can grill out on the beach or rent a shaded, floating raft off-shore for the day. Once a quiet fishing village, upscale resorts are now located directly on the beach, and can offer some protection from the badgering souvenirs salesmen who pursue the visitors during the high season.

Bahura

Bahura is situated in Batangas City, and is a deep dive location. Bahura means, "underwater rock formation," and is about 75 feet deep at its most shallow area. Divers are often able to see barracudas and tuna along with hammerhead and nurse sharks. The deep water at Bahura is typically calm and clear, though currents are strong with tidal change. Consider booking a diving tour at a resort near Ligpo, where local boatmen possess a good knowledge of the dive site.

Cathedral Marine Point Sanctuary

The Cathedral Marine Point Sanctuary is located south of Bagalangit Point in Batangas City and is also a dive site. The underwater rock amphitheater was once barren, but living coral has been transplanted there from other reefs down to approximately 90 feet. Diving tours find themselves surrounded by fish that are waiting to be fed, including Moorish idols and parrotfish.

Things To Pack For A Trip To Hawaii

What should you pack for Hawaii?

Packing for Hawaii isn't tricky. Still, forgetting something can be a major pain, while packing unnecessary items can be annoying. Basically, you'll want to bring your beach stuff, some clothes, and a few other odds and ends.

Beach Stuff

First and foremost, you want to make sure you're prepared for the beach. Bring two swimming suits, a towel, a pair of sandals, and sunglasses. Don't forget some sort of reef shoe--footwear that stays on and can get wet. Sunscreen (SPF 30 or above) is also a must (and use it!). A hat and SPF 30 lip sunscreen will also come in handy. Be sure to check your airline's website for specifications on cream or liquid items, as such things are often restricted by size.

Clothing

Unless you're headed to a business meeting, shorts and a t-shirt work well almost anywhere during the day; Hawaii's famous for being laid back. Bring a collared shirt or two for when you go out to restaurants. If you plan on going to a very nice restaurant or other formal event, call ahead of time (before your trip) and ask what the dress standards are, then pack appropriately.

Odd and Ends

Don't forget to bring a guidebook. Sure, you may not "need" one, but it will end up being useful; you can count on it. Recommended are Moon and Lonely Planet guidebooks. Wet wipes never fail to come in handy in an emergency. You may want binoculars, too, especially if you're a bird-lover. And don't forget your camera.

Tiki Hut Crafts

Tiki hut crafts bring a touch of the tropics to your craft work station.

Tiki hut crafts allow you to take an imaginative trip to the tropics, making them the perfect craft for days when the weather keeps you at home. Crafters can create miniature tiki huts for dioramas, model railroad layouts or simply as a decorative centerpiece. Not only are tiki huts fun to create and customize, children and adults can learn about the history of tiki huts, and how they're constructed, in the process.

Design the Tiki Hut

Research tiki huts online or at a library. Study pictures of tiki huts and how they are manufactured to get an idea of put together a miniature hut. Sketch a drawing of your tiki hut on paper. It doesn't have to be perfect; you likely will alter it as you go. Think about how you want the base, roof and walls of the hut to look. Consider also whether you want to make any special additions to your hut. Some people like to add recliner chairs, surfboards, tropical plants, signs and even people to their tiki hut model.

Paper Tiki Hut

Create the base of your tiki hut out of plain brown cardboard. Glue the pieces together with clear-drying craft glue. Roll brown paper around a pencil and use a small piece of tape to secure the roll. Slide the paper tubes off the pencil and use them for the corners of your hut. Cut large leaves out of green construction paper to create the roof of your hut. Alternatively, use strips of yellow or beige paper for a thatched roof. Create any additions out of construction paper, cardboard or poster board to give your tiki hut a tropical feel.

Bamboo Tiki Hut

Purchase craft bamboo from a local craft store. Create the base of your tiki hut out of cardboard and glue pieces of bamboo horizontally to the sides of the base. Glue additional pieces of bamboo vertically to the corners of the hut. For an enclosed tiki hut, glue bamboo or string-tied bundles of straw vertically along each wall, leaving an opening for the door of the hut. Use dried leaves or bundles of straw to create the roof of the hut. Create a sign for your hut from a piece of balsa and hang it from the roof of your hut. Add miniature silk flowers for a tropical feel.

Gingerbread Tiki Hut

Cut out gingerbread pieces for the base and roof of your hut. Cook the gingerbread according to your recipe and let the pieces dry for several days before construction to harden them. Glue the pieces together using frosting. Use cookie rolls or cinnamon sticks for the corners of your hut. Decorate the base and roof of the hut with frosting. Add cookie additions, decorated with frosting, for a personal touch. Create tropical flowers out of frosting on and around your hut. You can also add candies of different shapes as props.

Things To Include In A Daughter'S Birthday Invitation

Making birthday party invitations is an important factor in party planning. Done correctly, printed invitations simplify the process of having guests over by putting all the pertinent facts in one reference card. Leaving out an important detail can result in confusion, chaos and endless phone calls to straighten things out. Does this Spark an idea?

Who is Invited to the Party

Be sure that your invitation indicates exactly who is invited to the party. Most often, this is done on the envelope, by addressing the invitation to a specific person or a household. If you're having a large party and plan to invite entire families, then address the envelope to "The Marshall Family" for example. However, if only one child in the family is invited, then the envelope would say "Grace Marshall." You can reiterate this on the inside of the card by saying "Dear Grace" or "Dear Marshall Family." Being cautious about how your invitation is worded can help protect you from unexpected guests. Imagine if Grace showed up with her seven brothers and sisters.

Who is the Party for?

This may seem obvious, but it's easy to overlook. Commercial printed invitations often have a blank line for filling in the name of the birthday-kid, but if you're designing invitations on your own you need to be sure to mention whose birthday you're celebrating. "Amanda's sweet sixteen" or "Hallie's first birthday" do double duty by mentioning the name of the celebrant as well as the milestone birthday facts.

What Kind of Party is it?

If you're having a themed party, it may be wise to let your guests know. Sometimes kids like to come in costume, especially for a Princess Party. Some themes, like "pool party" and "tea party" will indicate a specific dress code that guests will want to know about. If you're planning messy activities, or playing in the snow, be sure to let guests know so that they can wear something appropriate.

Where is the Party?

The location of the party is an important thing to put on the invitation. Even if they've been to your house a hundred times, be sure to include your address on the invitation. For some guests, you may want to use an Internet mapping program to print directions. If your party is at a business, see if they offer pre-printed maps, or if their website has a printable map.

When is the Party?

Include not only the starting time of the party, but the ending time, too. You might be surprised how long parties can stretch, especially if there's still food left. If you welcome all-day guests, perhaps for a pool party or BBQ, mention that so that people don't make plans after the party. If you need the party to end by a certain time, mention it on the invitations and confirm with guests during the RSVP call, by saying "OK, so we'll see you from 1:00 to 3:00."

Things To Do With A Kalua Pig

Kalua pig is a traditional luau staple.

Kalua pig is a featured food in Hawaiian luau celebrations. Traditionally, the kalua pig is roasted on hot coals in a hole in the ground. In less traditional homes, kalua pig can be imitated by a crock pot, pressure cooker or conventional oven. There are many ways to serve kalua pig, including over rice and cabbage, making a sandwich or quesadillas, or serving with pineapple salsa. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Serve with Rice and Cabbage

After you cook the kalua pig, you can mix in cabbage and chicken stock in a pot on the stove to make a tasty Hawaiian alternative to corned beef and cabbage. Serve on hot white rice.

Kalua Pig Sandwich

There are many variations to the kalua pig sandwich. One includes mozzarella or Swedish Fontina cheese and kalua pork on a toasted baguette.

Kalua Pig Quesadillas

Kalua pig quesedillas put a Mexican twist on this Hawaiian dish. Serve tomato and avocado salsa with kalua pork quasedillas of moo shu wrappers or tortillas.

Kalua Pig with Pineapple Salsa

If you are planning to serve the kalua pig later, you can make pineapple salsa ahead of time. Serve the pineapple salsa over the hot kalua pig or on the side.
