Theme Meal Ideas

A themed meal can add the perfect touch to a family gathering or party. Other party items such as decorations, invitations and activities can all build on this theme. However, it is the meal that will really bring it all together. Incorporating several deliciously themed dishes into your event will immerse guests in the theme of the party, providing a memorable time for everyone. Does this Spark an idea?

Luau

Whether you have an authentic beachside location or are simply setting tiki torches around your backyard, a luau-themed meal will bring the taste of the tropics to your event. Serve chicken or pork as your main course with a sweet and savory honey teriyaki marinade. Pineapples are popular fare on tropical islands, so serve pineapple chunks alongside your meat dish and save the hollowed-out pineapple for use as a serving dish filled with fruit salad. Other sides may include sweet potatoes, banana bread and seafood-inspired dishes such as crab salad. For dessert, serve coconut cream pie or macadamia nut cookies to finish off the meal. At an adult event, you can include delicious fruity drinks such as mai tais.

Western

Fire up the grill and dust off your cowboy hats for a fantastic Western-themed meal. Set out snacks or appetizers in the form of chips, nachos or dried fruit in a napkin-lined cowboy hat. Serve barbecued pork and chicken or juicy steaks for your main course. Hot and hearty chili, cornbread, grilled corn on the cob and baked beans all serve as excellent sides. At a summer event, you can add a juicy watermelon to the menu. Apple pie a la mode for dessert will finish off this Western-themed meal.

Around the World

A meal with an around-the-world theme can be presented as a potluck dinner party or an educational experience for children. You can present each dish as a small sampler or assign a country to each course of the meal. Consider using appetizers from China or Japan such as wontons, mini egg rolls and sushi. For your main course, Italian foods such as pasta and pizza or Mexican fare including tacos, burritos and loaded nachos are great party pleasers. For sides, consider Indian and Thai food such as vegetable and rice dishes and various noodles. Desserts can be presented in the form of French pastries, Belgian chocolate or American apple pie. For an adult party, don't forget regional drinks such as margaritas for Mexico, Irish beer and whiskey, and French wine.
