Almost any nine-year old boy, and even some girls, will enjoy the adventure and the thrill of introducing the pirate lifestyle to a birthday party. A pirate-themed birthday party for a nine-year-old offers the perfect opportunity to explore the adventurous side of young children, and opens the door for a variety of games and themes that can turn a birthday party into a high-seas adventure. Does this Spark an idea?
Pirtate Birthday Invitations
Make creative pirate treasure map party invitations. These are easy to make, and can add an authentic pirate feel to the party from the start. Use brown paper bags and tear them so they are ragged, then hand-draw the directions to the party on the bag, along with the invitation to the party and the time and date.
Pirate Decorations
Purchase toy gold coins and fill small cardboard boxes with them. Use markers to color the boxes like a treasure chest and place these around the room. In addition to a pirate-decorated cake, make swashbuckler swords from cardboard, and have eye patches on hand for the guests.
Birthday Treasure Hunt
Hide the birthday gifts and send the birthday child on a treasure hunt for the gifts. A map (made from the same brown paper bags) can be used as a guide to where the presents are hidden. The map can also contain written clues, such as "This present is really cool" for a present hidden near the refrigerator.
Pirate Games
Send a list of pirate words along with the invitations. For each child who uses the authentic pirate language, give out a prize. Another game, "Capture the Flag," can be played with a skull-and-crossbones flag and cardboard swords. Purchase a pirate ship pinata, or play "Pin the Tail" on the treasure map instead of the donkey, and the child who comes closest to the X that marks the spot wins a prize. Other games include water balloon "cannonball" fights and "Walk the Plank," where kids cross a two-by-four above a designated area of "ocean." The child who gets across the most times in a specified time period wins a prize.
