Pool Party Invitation Wording Ideas

Get people excited about sitting poolside with a carefully crafted invitation.

With the summer's blistering heat, few people would need eloquent convincing to attend your pool party. Nevertheless, a well-worded invitation can stir up buzz and add to the excitement surrounding your gathering. When composing your invitation, ask yourself whether your party's theme can help you select just the right words to impress your guests. Does this Spark an idea?

Hawaiian or Tropical Theme

If you're throwing a Hawaiian or tropical-themed pool party, your invitation wording should reflect that idea. Planners throwing a Hawaiian party should open their invitations with an inviting "Aloha." Think about the symbolism associated with tropical paradise and work that into your invitation. For example, you might want to mention warm breezes, palm trees, grass skirts and leis. Use the following wording example for inspiration: "Aloha! Grab your grass skirt and lei. Hula your way over for a Hawaiian escape in Maya's backyard, August 25, 2010." Purple Trail offers additional wording inspiration and ideas.

Backyard Oasis

Perhaps your party's a more relaxed affair, and you want your guests to lay back and enjoy themselves in the summer afternoon breeze, tequila sunrise in hand. Word your invitation like you're calling people to a luxurious getaway on a remote island: "Escape. Join us for a poolside afternoon of tanning, treats and drinks in Melissa's summer oasis, August 25, 2010."

Jamaica, Mon!

Throwing a feel-good Jamaican pool party opens the door for creative invitation wording, thanks to the nuances of Jamaican English. If you aren't sure what Jamaican English sounds like, peruse Jamaicans.com for characteristic pronunciations and vocabulary. Careful about going so far with phonetic spelling that you make your invitation incomprehensible. Use Jamaican "versions" of a few key words and phrases to add flair without going over the top. For example: "Hey mon! We be mashin' up poolside, August 25, 2010 at Jane's house. Mo' time and hope to see you there!"

General Wording Suggestions

If you don't think a theme is right for your party, there are still plenty of general ideas you can use to word your invitations. Consider using water-related phrasing like "make a splash" or "make waves." Alliterative and rhyming phrases sound catchy and poetic: "wet and wild," "beat the heat," or "fun in the sun," for example. Focus on keeping your tone upbeat and painting a picture of your party with the words that you choose. For example: "Dive into summer! Grab your towel and swimsuit and celebrate the sunny season with us, August 25, 2010, at Megan's backyard pool."
