Simple Kids Cake Decorating Ideas

A simple birthday cake can be embellished any way you like.

Cake decorating can be a daunting task for a parent who has never picked up a piping bag. There are many options available, however, for decorating your child's birthday cake that do not require professional techniques. With creativity, colored icing and accessories, you can transform an ordinary sheet cake, either made by you or bought in a bakery, into a personalized creation for your child's birthday. Does this Spark an idea?

Decorating With Candy

For the most basic birthday cake decorations, use your child's favorite candy. Ice a cake of any shape or size with either a color of icing that coordinates with the candy or with your child's favorite color. Arrange the candy on the cake around the bottom and top edge for a border. You can make shapes like hearts or stars with the candy or just fill in every open space. For this decorating project, smaller soft candies will work best.

Princess Cake

For a beautiful three-dimensional princess cake, you will need a cake doll and icing tubes, purchased from a craft store. Bake a cake in a 2 1/2 qt. glass bowl. Flip the cake onto the flat side to cool. The cake will be the dress of the princess; use pink or purple icing to cover the dome. Embellishments for the dress may be drawn on with icing tubes. After the dress has been iced and decorated, insert the cake doll into the center of the dome to finish the princess cake.

Sports Ball Cake

A sports-themed birthday cake can be catered to your child's favorite sport. You can make a round sports ball using a 2 1/2 qt. glass bowl as the cake pan. Determine the ball you wish to create, then bake a cake in a glass bowl. While the cake cools on the flat side, tint the icing to the correct color for the ball. Ice the cake, and then apply embellishments. Red licorice may be used for the lines on a baseball, while black licorice strings can be used for a basketball.

Construction Site Cake

A construction site can be created easily on a sheet cake or a large round cake. Use chocolate icing on the cake for a dirt color. To add texture, consider crushed chocolate cookies or graham crackers sprinkled liberally over the surface. Create a large dirt pile using chocolate chips or cookie crumbs. Toy dump trucks, bulldozers and cranes can be strategically placed around the construction site.
