Grab some leis and get kids outside for a luau-themed party.
A luau is an ideal party theme for kids. They'll love the music, dancing and foods inspired by the great state of Hawaii and its traditional party theme. A luau isn't just for birthdays--you can host one at anytime for any occasion, but summer is an optimal time to have a backyard luau and get kids outdoors for a few tropical activities. Does this Spark an idea?
Invitations
Make luau-themed invitations with blank postcards. Decorate one side of each postcard with a tropical theme using stickers, foam cutouts and markers. Write your invitation message on the other side, and use wording like, "Having a great time at our luau, wish you were here." Write the party details as well. Another idea is to attach the invitations to leis and hand-deliver them to guests.
Decorations
Go all out decorating for your luau. Use torches, lots of flowers made of paper or garlands, tiki head decorations and colorful balloons and streamers. Pinatas in the shape of pineapples or parrots will add a tropical touch to the party. Put on some Hawaiian music in the background, and place ukuleles around the party area so that kids can play with them.
Activities
Gather kids in a circle for a game of "Pass the Coconut," which is played like "Hot Potato" but with a coconut instead. Have hula dancing and limbo stick contests, and set up a craft area where kids can pour colored sand into clear bottles to make a luau party souvenir. You can also have kids dig through a sandbox filled with small seashells using buckets and shovels.
Food and Drinks
Tropical-themed food and drinks will complement your luau nicely. Mix up some fruit-flavored smoothies and serve snow cones and lots of mixed fruit on skewers or in slices so that they can be easily eaten by kids.Teriyaki chicken with pineapple is also a snack kids will eat up when cubed and placed on skewers.
