Mud Bugs are ideal for getting through Kauai's varied terrain.
Kauai, Hawaii has numerous tour companies that arrange ATV tours of their lush island. Among the types of ATVs you can choose are small, two-passenger Mud Bugs. Seating is tight in Mud Bugs, which is why they are described as "perfect for honeymoon couples" or for an adult and child. The driver must be at least 16 and have a picture ID; some companies require a driver's license. The passenger must be at least 5 years old. Long pants are recommended, closed-toed shoes are required, and helmets are provided and must be worn. You will get muddy, so rental clothes that cover your own clothes are recommended, and some companies include them in the price.
Koloa Tour
Look for native plants on the Koloa Plantation tour.
Buckle into your Mud Bug for this three-hour tour of Koloa, a 22,000-acre, south shore plantation not open to the public. Koloa was Hawaii's first sugar plantation, which opened in 1835, and shaped the lives of Hawaiians for decades. Many Hawaiians today are descendants of these early plantation workers. See the sites of many movie adventures, including where part of "To End All Wars," starring Keifer Sutherland, was filmed. Ride through an old sugar cane tunnel a half-mile long, where cane was hauled back and forth. Look for wild pigs, bats, buffalo grass and other native Hawaiian plants and animals. Wear long pants and closed-toed shoes.
Waterfall Tour
Ask how steep and how far are the hikes to the waterfalls before signing up.
Get wet on this four-hour tour to two private waterfalls. Enjoy the gorgeous Kauai scenery from your Mud Bug en route to the location, then hike on uneven terrain through a bamboo forest to the falls. Wear your bathing suit underneath your clothes, and bring shoes for hiking, water shoes or old sneakers for the falls, and a beach towel. Some tours include a picnic lunch.
Combo Tour
The Waita Reservoir is not accessible to the public except through a tour.
If you've done the other tours or just want something different, choose a tour that combines both a ride through the Koloa Plantation and a water adventure. One such combo tour is "Puddles and Paddles," offered by Kauai Vacation Tours. Explore the Makai side of the Koloa plantation from your Mud Bug, then kayak in the fresh water of the Waita Reservoir, the largest body of inland water on Kauai. Relax or hike around the shoreline of the Waita, and have a picnic under a canopy of trees. Wear your swimsuit under your clothes and bring "water-friendly shoes" and a beach towel. The picnic, rental clothing for the Mud Bug tour, and kayak equipment are included.
Tour Companies
Some of the tour companies that offer Mud Bug adventures are Hawaii Active, All Kauai Tours, Kauai Vacation Tours, and Tom Barefoot's Cashback Tours Ltd.
