Origami Paper Folding Techniques

Origami is usually made by folding paper into shapes, like swans.

Origami is a type of art usually made out of paper. You can create origami by folding pieces of paper in various ways to create people, animals and objects. You use different folding techniques to make origami, such as valley, mountain, inside reverse, outside reverse, gate, cushion and Z-folds. Learning these basic folding techniques can help you create more complicated origami and simplify the overall origami-making process.

Instructions

1. Make a valley fold by folding your piece of paper in half lengthwise and curving it into a "V" shape.

2. Make a mountain fold by folding another piece of paper in half lengthwise, curving it into a "V" shape and flipping it over.

3. Fold another piece of paper with a valley fold. Create an outside-reverse fold by flipping one of the short ends of your valley fold slightly outwards onto its top side.

4. Fold another piece of paper with a valley fold. Create an inside-reverse fold by flipping one of the short ends of your valley fold partially inwards onto its bottom side.

5. Fold another piece of paper with a valley fold so a rectangle is created. Unfold, and then fold the two outer sides in to the crease to make a gate fold. Flip it up length-wise to make a vertical gate fold. Flip it down width-wise to make a horizontal gate fold.

6. Fold another piece of paper in half horizontally. Fold one half of the horizontal fold on top of its other half. Unfold the piece of paper to display a four-sectioned square. Fold in the corners of all four sections into the middle of the square to create a cushion fold.

7. Pick up another piece of paper. Fold one end inwards by one-third. Pick up the remaining two-thirds with your other hand and fold it backwards until it lines up with its edge. Take the end you folded inwards earlier and line it up with its edge. Smooth out the edges to create your rectangle base. Unfold the top and bottom edges of your rectangle base and stand the rectangle up to complete your Z-fold.
