Palm Tree Bedroom Ideas

Palm-tree design elements can create a relaxing room.

For a bedroom that evokes imagery of tropical beaches or lush rainforests, a palm tree theme can be the perfect design. By using a few simple design elements and carefully chosen color, you can create a room that is a comforting haven that reminds you of your favorite tropical retreat. Does this Spark an idea?

Wall Art

For an interesting, dramatic wall statement, stencil palm tree fronds in one corner, extending out onto the two walls. This will give the room dimension and create a focal point in the room. If you are artistic, you might consider adding subtle sunset colors behind the palm tree silhouette to give the feeling of a beach at the end of the day.

Color Scheme

When choosing paint colors, linens and bedding, look for colors that complement the palm tree theme. Consider ocean blues, sand-dune neutrals, whites, pale yellows or soft sunset pinks. A room with pale yellow walls is sunny and bright, and works well with bedding and accents in neutrals and greens.

Palm Frond Fans

In rooms with moderately high ceilings, a fan with palm-tree-frond-inspired blades can create a luxurious look that is reminiscent of 1940s Cuban dance clubs. Look for subtle designs that are not cartoonish or too literal; these can look tacky and overdone. Your goal is to find a fan that blends with the palm decor without becoming a focal point.

Bamboo Accents

To continue the sense of a tropical paradise, use bamboo elements to complete the room. Look for bamboo blinds, picture frames and other accents. Choose lamps with bamboo-lined bases, or look for table mats, wall hangings or lamp shades. Resist the temptation to overdo the bamboo: a few well-placed items will create a subtle tropical feeling without being focal points.

Filmy Canopy

To create the romantic, steamy feeling of a tropical resort, use a filmy white canopy that is reminiscent of the mosquito netting in many jungle lodges. Choose a nearly translucent material and drape it over your bed's posts, or attach to the ceiling with a circular frame. When you lie in bed and look through the material, the palm-tree decor elements will seem almost real.

Palm Accessories

If you are decorating your bedroom on a budget, focus on smaller details to give the room a palm tree theme. Look for framed photos of palm trees on a tropical beach, or choose sketched versions for a more minimal, antique look. Find accent pillows with a palm print, or add palm-shaped pulls to your dresser drawers. A few small changes can update the entire character of the room.
