Retirement Theme Party Decorations

Get retirement off to a great start with a party.

A retirement party is a time to celebrate both the achievements and memories of the guest of honor and a future of relaxation. A retirement party theme can focus on the hobbies or interests that the retiree will now be able to enjoy at leisure, nostalgia or on the rosy future.

Purpose

The purpose of retirement party decorations is to reflect the chosen party theme. Whether the party focuses on memories of the retiree's work life or looks toward the future, the overall mood of the party should be positive to deflect any misgivings the retiree may have about this major life transition. Incorporate the positive mood into the theme and let the theme guide your decorating scheme.

Color Scheme

The first consideration in decorating for a theme party is choosing a color scheme for balloons, streamers, congratulations banners and tableware. For an "Everything's Coming Up Roses" gardening hobby retirement theme, for example, you could select green for grass, brown for dirt and pink for roses as the color scheme.

Atmosphere

Some party themes call for decorations that evoke a particular atmosphere. For example, you could have a nostalgia-themed 1950s sock hop party for a retiree in his or her 50s or who enjoys that era and recreate the 50s atmosphere with your choice of wall decorations. Musical notes, vinyl records and poodle clip art or construction paper cutouts would all work with this theme.

Props

Props are another great way to decorate for a themed retirement party. For a 50s party, you might want some inflatable jukeboxes. For a fantasy retirement tropical island party, you could get inflatable palm trees and flamingos, seashells and tropical-colored orange and pink sand from the craft store. For a gardening hobby party, you could wheel the presents in with a wheelbarrow.
