Choose colorful but elegant flowers and decorations for a tropical-themed party.
Decorations for a tropical-theme party should be fun and colorful. Everything, from any motifs you use to the colors to the lighting, should reflect an island paradise. Choose decorations that evoke the theme without being overt. Too many plastic palm trees and faux leis can make your party kitchy, rather than elegant. Does this Spark an idea?
Lighting
Choose lighting that reflects the tropical theme of your party. If the gathering is outdoors, place tiki torches around the patio area. Have hanging lanterns to augment the lighting, as well as candles on tables. For creative candleholders, choose small glass fish bowls and layer sand and seashells under the candles. Or purchase floating candles to fit in these bowls. If you have a pool or water feature in the yard, larger floating candles would accent these areas beautifully.
Colors
Choose bright colors for a tropical theme, such as fuchsia, turquoise, orange or yellow. Choose one of these as a main color for large areas, such as tables, and accent with the other colors, such as in napkins. If you have acrylic plates and cups for using outdoors, they would work in these colors as well. Accent sparingly with other tropical motifs that bring out these colors, such as parrots and tucans, bright tropical fish or colorful butterflies.
Flowers
Flowers and greenery should reflect the tropics. You can purchase palm leaves to run along the center of the tables as a unique table runner. Choose tropical flowers, such as orchids or birds of paradise to add to the theme. If you can't find these flowers, look for brightly colored flowers that will accent the tropical colors, such as lilies. Group a bunch of identical flowers in each arrangement for more impact.
Fruit
Fruit is a natural decorating choice for a tropical-themed party, and it can be used as part of the buffet as well. Include a separate table with a wide variety of tropical fruits to provide the most impact. Include pineapple, mango, coconut and papaya on your fruit table, along with other colorful fruits such as berries, grapes and citrus fruits. Use a watermelon shell to hold some fruit, and if you have cut up pineapple, save the shells for your guests' pina colodas.
