Luau Party Activities

A hawaiian shirt is required dress for a luau.

A luau party can be a refreshing summer event; it can also help break up the cold darkness of winter. Festive party decorations, fresh fruit drinks, snacks and entertaining party games make it a gathering your friends will talk about for months. Take the time to structure some activities for guests of all ages to keep the party going and inspire some friendly competition amongst friends and family. Does this Spark an idea?

Limbo

The limbo is a traditional luau party activity and can be loads of laughs for party guests of all ages. Use a bamboo pole or long straight rod from a hardware store as your limbo pole. Get some Hawaiian music playing to start the dance. Guests line up and dance their way--bending backwards--under the limbo pole. The pole lowers after each round. The last person to clear the lowered pole wins.

Wildest Hawaiian Outfit

This party game starts with your invitation. Create a theme-related invitation that makes it clear that this is a luau party. Challenge each guest to come in her craziest Hawaiian gear. This includes hats, grass skirts and shirts. Once all the guests have arrived, have everyone vote for the most creative outfit.

Hula Contest

Play some Hawaiian music; challenge guests to a Hula-Off. Party-goers must keep their hula-hoop going throughout a song. Once they drop their hoops, they are out. The last hula-hoop still spinning wins.

Pineapple Bowling

Using real pineapples and real bowling balls, set up a pineapple bowling alley in your yard. Place six pineapples in the usual bowling pin configuration at one end of the lawn. Set up bowlers about ten feet away with a ball. Each bowler gets one turn, and the bowler with the most pineapples down in one-throw wins. Give players one test shot; that will allow them to get the feel for the game.

Relay Race

A relay race is fun for kids of all ages. Gather two Hawaiian shirts, two grass skirts, two straw hats, two sunglasses, two beach bags and two chairs. Place one of each item into the beach bags; divide the guests into two teams. Place the chairs at the end of the yard in front of each team. Team members must line up. When the game begins, the first player must dress in all the items, run to the chair and return; he must then take all the items off. Once done, the next player does the same thing until all team members have played. The first team to complete the relay wins.
