Tips On Decorating For A Luau Party

Luau party decor should be filled with vibrant colors and tropical flowers.

A lot of planning and decorations must go into setting the ambiance of a Hawaiian luau party. The party area should be filled with bold, bright colors and tropical flowers and fruits. Decorations can be found at department stores or party supply stores. In the invitations, tell guests to wear shorts, Hawaiian shirts, sun dresses, sarongs and flip flops to help set the mood of a relaxing, traditional Hawaiian experience. Does this Spark an idea?

Leis

Place leis of flowers around guests' necks as they arrive to the party, along with a cordial "Aloha" greeting. Leis can be handmade or purchased at a party supply store and can contain real or artificial flowers.

Flowers

Offer ladies a flower to place in their hair, and include tropical flowers throughout the party area. Place flowers behind the right ear if you are single and behind the left ear if you are taken, states The Hawaiian Luau (Resource 1). Popular flowers in Hawaii include the yellow hibiscus (the state flower), the pink cottage rose, the yellow ilima, the red ohia, the white kukui blossom, orchids and plumeria (Resource 3).

Straw Skirts

Decorate the luau with a lot of straw or grass skirting. Line tables, the bar and other areas with the skirting to create a tropical theme. Offer guests grass or straw skirts to place around their waists and try out hula dancing.

Drinks

Decorate drinks with colorful paper parasol umbrellas and straws, pineapple slices and flowers. Serve some drinks in hollowed-out coconut shells.

Fruits and Nuts

Hawaiian luaus are filled with the presence of tropical fruits (pineapples, bananas, mangoes, guava, passion fruit, coconuts and papayas), so be sure to include some on the buffet table to eat and for decoration. Macadamia nuts are also popular in Hawaii and can be placed in dishes throughout the party area or given to guests as party favors.

Table Décor

Spread Hawaiian-print sarongs, banana leaves, ferns or fish nets across tables. Arrange food dishes on top and scatter tropical flowers and sea shells on the table. Centerpieces can be created with an arrangement of sand, shells, flowers and candles. Intertwine shells and star fish within a net as it dangles down from the tabletop.

Art

Place tiki statues around the area and as part of table centerpieces. Hang pictures of Hawaii throughout the area for guests to enjoy. Ornate, decorated surf boards are also great party decorations.

Lighting

Line the party area with tiki torches, candles and white strings of Christmas lights to keep the party going when the sun goes down. Hang paper lanterns in vivid colors or flower patterns among the string of lights.

Other Decorations

Place tea lights inside clear bowls and let them float along freely in pools, along with tropical flowers. Other decorations can include palm trees and bamboo.
