Name Tags Ideas

Name tags, though sometimes disliked for the impersonal feel and act of labeling, are necessary evils at many events and parties full of strangers. The classic sticker name tags that are tossed out the moment the event is over are the most practical. However, creative decorative tags that require more time and effort to create can help remove the negative stigma surrounding the name tag and can double as a souvenir of the event.

Stickers

Stickers are the classic medium used for name tags as they require little effort to create and are generally inexpensive. Sticker name tags can be purchased blank, with the famous "Hello My Name Is" slogan or with a variety of different designs or printed images. You can make your own sticker labels at home with a printer and label paper with either the names already printed or left blank to be filled in by participants.

Around the Neck

Name tags that hang around your neck, like press pass tags or other specialty VIP tags, are less expected to wear than sticker name tags and they can be recycled and used for other events. Around the neck tags can be made out of any material including paper, laminated paper, wood or plastic and can be fastened around the neck with string, rope, yarn or nylon. Fabric lanyard ID holders are the best bet for making the name tag look like a press pass.

Cutouts

Cutout paper name tags in various shapes are crafty ways to jazz up a name tag for any event. Stencils or cookie cutters can be used to trace an image onto paper to create cutting lines. Names can be written directly onto the cutout shape or left blank for guests to fill in their own name. Ideas include a heart for Valentine's Day, a wreath or candy cane for a Christmas party or a teddy bear for a child's first birthday. Safety pins can be glued to the back of the cutout to act as a fastener.

Messages

Name tags with additional information other than a name are common for events that require ice breakers such as a block party, convention or book club. Printed name tags can include "Name" as well as "From," "Interesting Fact" or "Favorite Food." Adding messages requires all guests to answer the same question, thus encouraging conversation to spark between individuals.

Glass Tags

Name tags can often make people feel uncomfortable. To avoid the clich sticker on the lapel, break from tradition and use name tags less conspicuously. Glasses are an ideal place to stick name tags as holding a drink is common during a party or large gathering. Sticker labels can be placed directly on water glasses and wine charms can be placed on the stem of a wine glass.
