Simple Backyard Wedding Ideas

Simple decorations make your backyard wedding picturesque.

A backyard wedding can be classy and intimate, and is an affordable way to celebrate one of the most important days of your life. If you're planning on exchanging vows in a backyard ceremony, choosing the right theme and decorations will make the event especially memorable.

Whimsical Garden

If you don't have all the flowers you want for your wedding in your garden, create a whimsical garden theme by purchasing flowers in the colors of your choice and using decorative trays and vases to adorn the backyard. Select brightly colored flowers like tulips or sunflowers for a wedding that will take place in the spring or summer; the hues of the flowers will look radiant against your white dress or aisle runner. Flowers with a deep, rich color like red roses or black calla lilies add elegance to a fall or winter celebration. Vases and flower trays in varying shapes will give the "garden" a fanciful look; to unify the look, choose containers in a monochromatic color scheme, such as white vases or flower trays in metallic shades.

Balloons and Bows

Adding bows, ribbons, and balloons to your backyard wedding decorations will help you avoid over-using flowers, or give you an alternative to plant-based decor if you're not exactly a flower fan. Use balloons in your wedding colors to adorn the ends of the aisles where guests will sit, or have a large balloon bouquet made to accent the area of the yard where you will exchange your vows. You can also rent a balloon arch for the wedding, or use small balloon bouquets as the centerpieces for the outdoor tables where guests will enjoy the reception. Tie satin ribbons around the balloon arrangements to add an elegant feel, and use ribbon or bows for decorating the chairs by attaching large bows to the backs of the seats. You can also use bows or ribbon to tie your bouquet together, or keep the flowers in your bridesmaid's bouquets intact.

Tents and Pavilions

If you plan to use your gazebo or screened-in porch at the event, accent it with your wedding colors and decoration choices to make it ceremony-ready. Large flower arrangements or balloons can fill each corner of the gazebo; over-sized flower vases, as well as arches made from flowers or balloons, grace the porch area to make the wedding space more appealing. If space permits, rent a large tent for your wedding guests. This will provide additional heat or cool air, depending on the whether, as you can use fans or portable heaters inside the tents. Choose the tent color that matches your wedding decor, and adorn the space with items like paper lanterns and electric candles to create a relaxed ambiance for your wedding.
