What To Say In A Birthday Invitation

What to Say in a Birthday Invitation

A birthday is a special time when you get to celebrate a momentous day with someone you love. Whether for your own birthday or the birthday of a child or spouse, a birthday invitation provides you with the opportunity to share pertinent information with party guests to ensure a carefree, fun celebration. Does this Spark an idea?

Describe the Party

A well-written birthday invitation begins with a short message (less than 20 words) that describes what the party is and for whom it's being thrown. That's it. There is no reason to go into great detail here about the birthday boy's special year in school or the birthday girl's favorite color. Keep it short and simple, such as: "Join us for an unforgettable birthday celebration for Megan's 50th birthday!" or "Come play laser tag and eat cake at Billy's 9th birthday bash!"

Include the Information

Include all pertinent information that guests will need to make it to the party on time, arrive at the right location and dress appropriately. Prominently feature the date of the party (with both the day of the week and date, including month and year), the venue with complete address (including ZIP code - this helps guests who will input the address into a GPS or online mapping website) and the full name of the venue. Make sure to check for any errors before you send out the invites; a misplaced number in a street address could cause a headache for all involved.

Also, be specific about the start time and end time of the party so that late arrivals don't ruin your party. If a meal will be served, include this time as well (i.e. "The party is from 4-7 p.m. Dinner will be served promptly at 5 p.m."). If there is a dress code, include this information (i.e. "Black-tie attire" or "Casual attire").

Think Theme

Keep your invitation interesting by choosing words and phrases that reflect your birthday party's theme. For example, if the party has a basketball theme, include phrases like "Assemble your team" and "Beat the buzzer" into your invitations to add to the festiveness of the event and get your guests in the mood to party before they even arrive.
