The yellow hibiscus is one of five hibiscus varieties that are native to Hawaii. Any variation of the hibiscus was considered to be the state's flower until the state specified the yellow version, or Hibiscus brackenridgei, as the official flower.
Details
In Hawaiian, the flower is known as the ma'o hau hele or pua aloalo. The plant on which the flower grows is generally 3 to 15 feet tall, but it can get as tall as 30 feet. The flowers bloom most frequently in spring and early summer. They measure 4 to 6 inches across and feature bright yellow petals and a maroon center.
Island Flowers
Oahu's official flower is the yellow ilima. The official flower of the Big Island is the red Ohia. The lokelani, or rose of heaven, is the official flower of Maui. The white kukui is Molokai's flower.
