Types of Food in the Hawaiian Islands
A trip to the Hawaiian Islands can be an adventure to remember. The spirit of Aloha, the beauty of the islands coupled with the variety of food and fresh tropical fruit available can enrich the senses. Each nationality contributes specific flavorings and recipes. Chinese
Sweet and sour pork is a specialty of the Chinese people in the Hawaiian Islands. This popular dish is available throughout the U.S. mainland. Char Siu is a dish lesser known but equal in taste. Red bean curd and Chinese Five Spices give this pork recipe distinctive taste and color.
Filipino
Philippine immigrants introduced Adobo (pronounced UH-DOE-BOW) to the people of Hawaii. It is pork or chicken prepared in an overnight marinade of vinegar, garlic and ginger. It is typically served with sticky white rice.
Hawaiian
Attend a luau on any of the Hawaiian Islands and you will be served a meal of kalua pork, lau lau, lomi salmon, rice and poi. Coconut pudding is served for dessert. Taro leaves wrapped around belly pork and butterfish is steamed for four hours to make lau lau. Poi is made by mashing the cooked taro plant and mixing with water, however, it tends to be a type of food that is an acquired taste for visitors in the Hawaiian Islands. Lomi salmon is a side dish of finely diced salted salmon, tomatoes, and green onions. The word lomi means "massage" in the Hawaiian language. The ingredients in lomi salmon are massaged, or mixed by hand, in one bowl.
Japanese
Teriyaki sauce is used on many entrees in Hawaii. The ingredients may vary slightly in different parts of the Hawaiian Islands, but the flavor is distinct whether used on chicken, beef or fish. Sushi has been adapted and is enjoyed today in many parts of the U.S. mainland. A local favorite throughout Hawaii is cone sushi. It has an outer wrapper of fried bean curd and is stuffed with white rice seasoned with sweet rice wine.
Korean
Kalbi is a Korean dish of broiled short ribs that have been marinated in a blend of spices like ginger and garlic. Lightly battered and fried beef patties make up the popular Korean dish of Meat Juhn. Both are traditionally served with white rice.
