Types Of Sea Salt

Sea salt is created by evaporating ocean or sea water, with the salt being what is left behind after all of the water is gone. Sea salt comes in many different forms because there are different minerals in different sea or ocean water. The mineral composition can change not only the color but the flavor of the sea salt. Black Salt


Black salt is a type of sea salt that is most common in India but can be found anywhere in the world. This type of sea salt is known for having a very strong sulfur-like odor, and has a pink or gray coloring. Black sea salt can be used for seasoning many foods but is most commonly used in the seasoning of Indian cooking.


Gray or Celtic Sea Salt


This type of sea salt is a bit different because it collected from the light film of salt that forms throughout the evaporation process. This type of salt is harvested by hand in a traditional Celtic method. The salt is usually gray or even light-purple in color, which is a result of the clay in the areas where it is harvested. Gray sea salt is harvested in France and can be used in the preparation of any dish.


Hawaiian Sea Salt


This type of sea salt is harvested in and around Hawaii and is distinctive from all of the other sea-salt options on the market. The reason for this is that it has a deep-pink color that comes from the additive Alaea. Alaea is volcanic clay that is red in color and has iron in it; when added to the salt it creates a lovely pink tone. This type of sea salt is generally used in Hawaiian dishes such as Hawaiian Jerky and Kahlua Pig.


Coarse Sea Salt


This type of sea salt is found in large grain. The larger grains are preferable when flavoring soups or even crusting meats, as it is resistant to moisture. Coarse sea salt is meant to be ground up when used for seasoning.


Sea Salt Flakes


This form of sea salt takes the shape of snowflakes. The reason for this is that the ocean or sea water evaporates with the help of the wind and the sun. After the water evaporates the remnants are heating, causing the flakes to form.


Italian Sea Sat


This type of sea salt is harvested using traditional Mediterranean evaporation methods. The salt is harvested from the lower Mediterranean Sea by hand and is high in many minerals. It is particularly good in sauces as well as on salads.


Smoked Sea Salt


This is a type of sea salt that is a bit different from all the rest. The sea salt is smoked over wood fires, which adds smoke flavor to the salt crystals. Smoked sea salt is gaining in popularity and is used in a variety of dishes such as meat and fish, pasta, salads and even soup.
