Unique Tropical Costume Ideas

A tropical costume fits in at a luau.

If you're attending a luau or outdoor costume party, you may be looking for a tropical-inspired outfit. There are a number of themes you can draw on to create a unique tropical costume -- everything from a Hawaiian girl to a pirate. A little creativity will go a long way to impressing your friends.

Hula Girl

A hula girl is a typical costume, but you can put a twist on this by having a man dress up in this style instead. Wear a plastic hula grass skirt from a party store or make one by cutting up a length of green fabric. Then wear a bikini top and put a few flowers in your hair for the finishing touches.

Pirate

Pirates are a big hit at any party and will fit in perfectly for a tropical costume event. Wear a loose white shirt and black pants and pair it with a bandana over the head and an eye patch. You can carry other props like a stuffed parrot or a telescope and make sure to say "Argh" as much as possible.

Tropical Tourist

For a funny costume twist, go as a tropical tourist, dressing like a typical tourist at a spot like Hawaii or the Caribbean. Wear a tropical print shirt with shorts, socks and sandals, put a smudge of sunscreen on your nose and carry a large camera and map.

Mermaid

You can make a mermaid costume using some fabric to wrap around your legs for a tail. Wear a bikini top and frizz out your hair with a curling iron or crimper to get that "I just came out of the water" look. You can glue seashells to your bikini top and draw scales on your skin with an eyeliner pencil as well.
