Use common home items, such as colored glass bottles, to provide decoration and style.
For those on a budget, decorating the home may seem years in the future. However, although it may be a bit more difficult, decorating on a budget is possible, and can even give your home a more personal and thoughtful touch. Before you begin, be sure to prioritize your decorating needs to avoid spending too much money on one area. Does this Spark an idea?
Walls
Perhaps one of the most common and glaring home decor problems is empty, vacuous wall space. If original artwork is outside your budget, have no fear. Consider using photos that you've taken yourself to fill that empty space. Select your favorite quality photos and make collages of nature photography or family photos. Or, if you are an artist, you can mount some of your own work to display. If you don't have a knack for photography or drawing, consider framing doilies, which are quite cheap and attractive, like the doily wall design at Budget Styles.
Floors
If your floors are unattractive or a bit on the plain side, consider spicing them up with inexpensive rugs. Shop around at secondhand stores for Persian rugs, which are very expensive when purchased new but can be found on the cheap. Bamboo mats are an inexpensive floor covering idea and are also easy to maintain and clean. You can find them at most department stores or at your local ethnic store.
Accessories
Accessories are a great way to give your home a personal and creative feel. Save attractive wine and beer bottles to provide decoration for empty kitchen or dining room shelves. You can even create unique lighting with a wine bottle lamp. Simply drill a hole in the bottom of a wine bottle, string Christmas lights inside the bottle and plug it in for a unique kitchen light fixture. Decorative vases and candles can often be found at thrift stores, or you can paint them yourself and tailor the pattern to your room design.
Color Scheme
You don't have to paint your whole house in order to liven up the color scheme. As noted at This Old House, "Where rooms are relatively featureless, painting an 'accent wall' in a vivid hue where the others are white or neutral can add a dramatic, contemporary edge." An accent wall also provides a solid base for the overall color scheme of the room, and accentuates any decor you might already have. A home exterior can be dramatically altered by simply painting the front door or window frames.
