Things To Do In Waikiki

Waikiki, one of the top tourist destinations in Hawaii, is known primarily for its beaches.


The majority of hotels and resorts on the Hawaiian island of Oahu are can be found in Waikiki, a major tourist hub in Honolulu, the state capital. Located on the southeastern shores of the island, Waikiki's claims to fame are its beaches and biodiversity, but the neighborhood also boasts a vibrant nightlife and entertainment scene.


Aquatic Activities


Waikiki is situated on the Pacific Ocean, which provides many opportunities for recreation. Sign up for a canoe or board surfing lesson at one of the many booths found along the beach. If you are an able swimmer, several companies offer scuba dives, such as the Waikiki Dive Center, which caters to beginners and advanced divers. You can also snorkel solo or join fellow snorkelers on a sailing trip on the Outrigger Catamaran. For a more heart-pumping experience, ride the Honolulu Screamer, a jet boat that can travel up to 40 mph and provides breathtaking views of Waikiki and the surrounding mountains.


Nature and Wildlife


Science-oriented travelers can visit the approximately 995 mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles that live at the 42-acre Honolulu Zoo. To observe and learn about South Pacific marine fauna, including the rare butterfly fish and the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, the Waikiki Aquarium is the place to go. For an even closer look at the region's native ocean life, sign up for the Atlantis Submarine Tour, which takes passengers on a 100-foot dive to the artificial reefs off the coast of Waikiki, which teem with numerous species of fish, sea turtles and coral.


Tours and Cruises


For scenic, historic or shopping tours Waikiki and the city of Honolulu, take a tour with Waikiki Trolley. Several companies also offer President Obama tours, which make stops at various places the 44th president of the United States frequented throughout his youth in Hawaii.


You can also relax and see the island from aboard one of many lunch and dinner cruises available, such as the ones operated by Star of Honolulu, which also offers dolphin and whale watches. For a romantic evening, watch a spectacular Hawaiian sunset on a sunset dinner cruise.


Live Entertainment


Several hotels in Waikiki offer live performances that capture the cultural history of Hawaii. Three of the most popular dinner shows in the area are Magic of Polynesia featuring illusionist John Hirokawa at the Ohana Waikiki Beachcomber, Aha'aina Luau at the Royal Hawaiian and Creation: A Polynesian Journey at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani. Alternatively, take in a performance at the Hawaii Opera Theater, which offers one program each summer and three during the winter.
