The "RuneScape" Smithing skill allows you to create useful metal objects out of raw materials by smelting ore and forging metal bars. To smelt a metal bar, you must use metal ore on a furnace, and forging requires you to use the metal bar and hammer on an anvil. You can make several items with the Smithing skill, including armor, weapons, crossbow bolts and cannonballs. There are many methods to getting Smithing experience, but reaching Level 99 Smithing is a rare and profitable achievement.
Smithing Level 1 to 15
When you first begin training for the Smithing skill, you can smelt and forge Bronze bars with one Copper Ore and one Tin Ore. For each ore you smelt and bar you forge, you receive 6.2 Smithing experience. If you have Level 1 Smithing, mine or purchase 129 Copper Ore and 129 Tin Ore. Smelt each bar with a furnace in Lumbridge or Al Kharid and forge each bar with the Varrock anvil.
Smithing Level 15 to 31
At Level 15 Smithing, you can begin the "Knight's Sword" quest that gives you 12,725 Smithing experience. In addition to Level 15 Smithing, the quest requires you to have Level 10 Mining and a high enough Combat level to evade Level 53 Ice Giants and Level 57 Ice Warriors. After completing the quest, you will have Level 31 Smithing.
Smithing Level 31 to 40
At Level 30 Smithing, you can smelt and forge Steel Bars, which wield 17.5 experience for each ore you smelt and bar you forge. To smelt a Steel Bar, you must use one Iron Ore and two Coal. Purchase or mine 402 Iron Ore and 804 Coal. Smelt each bar with the furnace in Al Kharid and forge each bar with the Varrock anvil.
Smithing Level 40
At Level 40 Smithing, you can begin the "Family Crest" quest that rewards an enchantable pair of Family Gauntlets. In addition to Level 40 Smithing, the quest requires you to have Level 40 Mining, Level 40 Crafting and Level 59 Magic. After completing the quest, visit Avan in the Al Kharid Mine to make the gauntlets into Goldsmithing Gauntlets, which yield more than double the regular experience each time you smelt Gold Ore into Gold Bars.
Smithing Level 40 to 99
At Level 40 Smithing, you can smelt Gold Bars, which yield 55.25 experience for each Gold Ore you smelt. Smelting a Gold Bar requires you to use only one Gold Ore. To reach Level 99 Smithing, you must smelt 231,268 Gold Bars (compared to 577,654 without the Goldsmithing gauntlets). If you have Varrock Armour 2, smelt the bars with the Edgeville Furnace. If you have completed the "Ghosts Ahoy" quest, smelt the bars with the Port Phasmatys Furnace. In addition, you can use the "Superheat Item" spell to smelt the ore into bars. Although using the "Superheat Item" spell is convenient, the method is very costly, requiring a Nature Rune and Fire Staff for each bar.
