Hang ten is a surfing move.
The phrase "hang ten," referring to a specific surfing move, comes from surfer culture. It started in the 1960s and is popular with surfers worldwide.
Description
The "ten" in "hang ten" refers to toes.
The hang ten move happens when a surfer walks to the front of the board and curls his toes over the board for the length of wave. It is considered to be one of the most difficult moves to achieve on a surfboard.
Hand Signal
A surfer on his surfboard makes the hang ten gesture---a signal in which the surfer makes a fist and extends the pinkie and the thumb---to indicate that the move was completed. The gesture is also used out of the water, as a greeting between surfers.
Other Uses
Other sports have adapted the hang ten move. BMX bikers complete the hang ten by balancing on a moving bike with their feet on the front pegs and the rear tire in the air.
