When drawing up a retirement party guest list, consider the tone of the occasion. A send-off held by the retiree's corporation would include his colleagues and supervisor, but it would also be appropriate to invite his spouse. If you are throwing a retirement party for family and friends, extend invitations to the retiree's supervisor and closest co-workers.
Timing
Guests need to be given ample notice as to when the party will be held, so mail your invitations at least four weeks prior to the event.
RSVP
If you want guests to RSVP, be clear about the cut-off date for responding.
Type of Invitation
Use paper invitations instead of e-vites for the event. They are more thoughtful and accord more respect for a person who has worked hard before reaching this juncture.
Gifts
Refrain from mentioning gifts on the invitation since they usually are not considered required for this event. Those who do want to give a present typically make them lighthearted ones.
Attire
Let the guests know what attire is appropriate, using terms like "casual," "cocktail" or "black tie." Don't assume that they will know dress based on where the party is to be held.
Surprise
Inform the invitees if the party is a surprise and emphasize the time they need to arrive so they don't ruin the surprise for the guest of honor.
