Surfboard Cake Decorations

Inspiration for a surfboard cake.

If you live near the ocean or have a surfing fanatic in your life, a surfboard cake may be in your very near future. You have a couple of options when it comes to creating this type of cake -- you can call in a special order at the local bakery or make it yourself. If you plan to go the homemade route, your cake can be as simple or complex as you like. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Cake Toppers

Perhaps the easiest way to create a surfboard cake is by icing a traditional cake with your favorite colors and using surfboard decorations or toppers. Because surfboards come in a variety of colors and designs, you can let your creativity guide the way for icing colors. When it comes to choosing the toppers, think tropical: tiny palm trees, edible surfboard decorations or even surfing cartoon characters. You may need to seek out these specialty items online, so give yourself plenty of time to find them.

Surfboard Cake

If you want to go all out, you can create a surfboard-shaped cake. Whip up your favorite cake mix; store bought or homemade is fine. The difficult part will be in creating the oblong surfboard shape. For full surfboards, start with an oval baking dish and trim one end to a more severe point than the rest of the cake. Half surfboards are a little easier. Bake the cake in a rectangular dish and trim 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the top two corners, creating a blunt point.

Icing

Icing can be as simple or complex as you would like. Your creative skill will be the determinant on this. If you enjoy creating confections, you may want to design a beachlike scene that includes a surfboard. Vanilla icing, blue food coloring and a plastic bag are all you need to make rolling waves. Mix the icing until it is your favorite shade of blue, place in a plastic bag, snip 1/4 inch off the corner and use it to create pipes and swirls of "water." For a sandy beach, use crumbled vanilla wafers over vanilla icing. Top with an edible surfboard.

Fondant Figures

Fondant is a handy icing material you can use to make figures. Similar to clay in texture, you can color, sculpt or make imprints on fondant to make a variety of accessories. You can form surfboards, surfboard wax, waves and even surfers out of this pastry medium.

Gum paste is also an option because it dries quickly and can be rolled much thinner than fondant, but it is not very tasty.
