Senior Citizen Leisure Activities

Leisure activities help seniors stay active.

Senior citizens have a lot of time on their hands. At this point in their lives, their kids are grown and out of the house, they have fewer responsibilities and they're retired -- or are counting down the days. This extra time provides the perfect opportunity to incorporate leisure activities into their daily lives. It will help them stay active and keep their mind and body refreshed. Does this Spark an idea?

Swimming

Swimming is not only fun but it also provides a way to stay fit and healthy. The YMCA and local community centers often provide indoor swimming pools for recreational year-round use. Both organizations offer senior citizen discounts for daily or yearly membership passes. In addition to recreational swimming, seniors can sign up to take swimming lessons and water aerobics classes. These water aerobic classes provide a way for seniors to exercise without putting too much pressure on their joints.

Gardening

Gardening is a leisure activity that has many physical and mental benefits. Aside from enjoying fresh, homegrown fruits and vegetables, gardening provides an enjoyable form of exercise. It encourages seniors to use their fine motor skills to bend, walk and reach to plant seeds, dig holes and take cuttings. Gardening also helps reduce stress and promotes relaxation. Just being outdoors with nature promotes overall stimulation and a sense of well-being.

Travel

Take the time to visit distant relatives and friends. Many airlines, train services and bus services offer discount fares to senior citizens. Take vacations to the places you have always wanted to visit but never had the time or resources to. If you belong to a community center or some type of senior organization, ask about any future travel itineraries. Take advantage of the trips they have to offer. This is a great way to meet new friends and enjoy your new-found freedom.

Volunteer

Give back to your community by volunteering your services and time. There are so many great organizations and causes that could use the extra help. Depending on your interests, you can volunteer at a nursing home, food bank or shelter. If you're a retired executive or business owner, you can volunteer your services and become a mentor to small business owners with your local Score organization.
