What You Need To Know About Vacationing To Hawaii

Hawaii is one of the top destinations for travelers.

Known as the "Aloha State," Hawaii is located in the central Pacific Ocean. It has six major islands to visit: Hawaii's Big Island, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai. Each island has its own set of unique adventures, whether it's exploring Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, making the trip along the Hana Highway in Maui or surfing the waves on Oahu's North Shore.

Best Time to Travel

Hawaii's temperatures average 75 to 85 degrees year-round.

Trade winds keep the islands warm and make Hawaii a good place to visit year-round. With an average temperature between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, summer attire is a must to pack, although you should bring a jacket for cooler evenings.

Passports

As the 50th state, U.S. citizens don't need a passport to visit Hawaii unless they plan to visit another country after their trip. Visitors from outside the United States need a passport.

Currency

The U.S. dollar is the currency used in Hawaii. According to the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, credit cards are widely accepted and there are plenty of ATM machines throughout the islands.

Time Difference

Following Hawaii Standard Time, the state's time is five hours behind Eastern Standard Time and two hours behind Pacific Standard Time. The state does not observe Daylight Savings Time, which means there is an additional hour difference between March and November.

State Capital

Honolulu, the state's capital, is located on the island of Oahu. Honolulu International Airport is the state's major airport, and is a good portal to all of the islands. Travel by airplane is the best way to travel between the islands. All major domestic carriers and many international carriers have flights to Honolulu International Airport, and there are also direct flights to Maui, Kauai and the Big Island from the continental U.S.

Language and Customs

Hawaiian and English are the two official languages of Hawaii. The Hawaiian alphabet has only 13 letters. Aloha, which means "hello" and "goodbye," is found throughout Hawaii's culture as the state's inhabits share their love of their home and heritage with visitors.
