Seaside home decorating can be accomplished with an emphasis on coastal colors and the use of natural materials. It is a matter of creating a light-filled, relaxed atmosphere, with a sense of uncluttered space. One advantage of decorating in this style is that you can easily make your own accent pieces with inexpensive or found objects. Whether or not you live near the ocean, you can decorate your place to give it the same easygoing feel of a seaside home. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Choose a palette of harmonious seaside colors that you can use to paint each room. This will allow you to have different looks in each room while still keeping the theme throughout the house. Tan, seafoam green, white, gray, light blue and dark blue are all coastal colors. Mix and match the colors for both the interior paint and the fabrics used throughout the rooms.
2. Create your own decor accents, such as filling clear glass vases with colored sand and seashells. Set them on shelves, a mantel or coffee table. You can also purchase a large dried starfish as wall decor and add a netting behind it. Add a piece of driftwood to a wall or use it as a base for a glass-covered coffee table.
3. Set decorative pillows on couches and chairs. They can be solid colors to fit your color palette or with patterns, such as anchors or seashells, or pastel stripes.
4. Consider rattan and wicker furniture to create an instant seaside ambiance. Upholstered pieces that are overstuffed and comfortable are another signature of seaside decorating.
5. Choose white sheer drapes or use linen or bamboo blinds to keep the impression of clear light flowing in the room.
6. Look for sea grass or other types of natural fiber for floor coverings.
