Sewing Projects For Baby Showers

Themed baby shower decorations help create the right mood at a baby shower.

A baby shower is an unforgettable time in any mother's life, and the decorations that make up the day are never forgotten. If you want to create unique decorations that can last for generations, consider a sewing project. Depending on the theme of the shower, a number of great ideas can be used to sew a special shower decoration for the new baby and mommy-to-be. Does this Spark an idea?

Retro Shower Projects

For a retro baby shower, choose projects that are rooted in history. Sock monkeys have been a popular toy for decades and are simple to make. The only materials required are a sock, stuffing, thread and a little yarn. A grouping of these on the display table sets the mood for a retro shower. Cloth diaper bibs or burping cloths are an old fashioned way to use an old cloth diaper and are quick to make. If you are skilled at sewing, make an heirloom baby bonnet using lace and cotton as a decoration to be used once the baby comes.

Summer Shower Projects

For a summer-themed baby shower, sew fabric beach balls using quilting fabric. These balls are a great toy for babies and make a great decoration in a baby room as well. Although they require some proficiency at sewing, they can last for generations and become a cherished heirloom. For advanced sewers, create a sun-shaped baby nursing pillow using soft materials in a bright hue. Sew a customized baby towel for the new baby with his name embroidered on the end. Place these on a display table with other summer-themed decorations.

Traditional Shower Projects

Perhaps the most common shower theme is the traditional shower, with images of babies and a little pampering for the mother-to-be. If this is your theme, create a baby sock wrist corsage for the mother using a variety of baby socks and lace sewn together onto wire and a corsage wristband. Terry cloth baby blocks are a traditional decoration that the new baby can play with and are easy to create. These squares can be made out of old terry cloth burping towels or blankets. Sew a cloth pennant-style banner with traditional baby images on each pennant to be hung over the gift table or food area.

Modern Shower Projects

For the modern mommy-to-be, sew a fabric baby sling out of her favorite colors and fill it with toys to display at the shower. A diaper cake is a hip idea that serves as both a cute decoration and a handy gift. These can be created by sewing a cloth basket to hold the layers of diaper "cake" and other assorted goodies.
