The Best Cities for Singles to Live
Determining the best cities for singles to live depends on a lot of factors. Forbes' annual survey ranks cities by the number of singles in them, the living cost, nightlife and culture opportunities, as well as general coolness. This survey assumes that as a single person you want to meet a significant other and it ranks cities for that potential. Beyond the top seven cities, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Austin all ranked highly as well.
New York City
It's no surprise that the Big Apple ranks number one on this list. As Katrina Hunt of MSNBC's travel site says, "Of course, the race for the top singles cities boils down, in many ways, to how good the bar scene is." And New York City has an extremely active bar scene. Not to mention the fact that there are so many people means that there are more singles to meet.
Boston
Boston receives good marks for being cheaper to live in than New York, ensuring more young, eligible people would live there. In addition, its many colleges draw a younger crowd to the city. Its nightlife and coolness factors are perhaps not as diverse, but Boston offers a great culture and many singles to meet.
Chicago
The Windy City also ranks highly in terms of living cost and number of singles. SIngles in Chicago are also very willing to participate in online dating, which increases chances of meeting someone by a significant percent.
Seattle
Seattle might seem like a strange choice, considering that it's about as expensive to live in as New York and its job growth, a factor which increases the likelihood of singles being out spending money, is very low. But it's got a great nightlife scene and is a trendy place for young people to move to, as well as a high participation in online dating.
Washington, D.C.
The nation's capital is one of the only cities in 2010 with excellent job growth potential, largely because of the increase in government jobs. This factor, as well as a diverse bar scene and great cultural opportunities, ranks it number five in best cities for singles.
Atlanta
Atlanta gets top marks for its living costs, which are significantly lower than many other cities on the list. Though it doesn't fare as well on culture and nightlife opportunities--you'll need a car to get around Atlanta, which makes going out and partying somewhat tougher--low living costs and high potential job growth put Atlanta at number six on the list.
San Francisco
Next to New York, San Francisco ranks highest on the cool scale. Its laidback atmosphere and beautiful scenery draw many young singles from all over the country. Trolley rides, for example, provide a romantic backdrop for dates. In addition, it's also one of the best places for gay singles to meet each other.
