Hula girls can serve as inspirations for luau cakes.
People of all ages can celebrate any occasion with a Luau party. Luau cakes make great desserts for Hawaiian-themed parties. For children's cakes, you can create a hula girl, a Hawaiian scene or tiki figurine cakes. While you can also use these cakes for adult parties, you could also go with more of a traditional Hawaiian dessert for your adult luau. Does this Spark an idea?
Hula Girl
Hula girls are a luau tradition. You can make cakes in the shape of a hula girl using a plastic doll. To create this cake, cook cake batter in a small, deep, oven-safe bowl, such as a Pyrex bowl. Once the cake is baked and cooled, tip the bowl upside down to make the hula girl's skirt. You can then push a plastic doll down into the center of the cake. You can decorate this cake using frosting made to look like the grass of the skirt, and edible flowers. You can make a top for the doll, such as a coconut bikini top, using colored frosting.Use bright colors to make a lei for the hula girl or flowers for her hair. You can also use flower sprinkles to decorate the cake. Wash the doll and keep it as a toy after the cake has been eaten.
Hawaiian Scene
Luau cakes can depict a Hawaiian scene. This type of cake should have decorations that look like water, sand, palm trees and brightly colored flowers. You can create sand and water with frosting bags and different types of decorating tips. For more authentic-looking sand, purchase or make cookie crumbs to sprinkle onto the cake. Use gel frosting to make water decorations look more authentic. You can purchase plastic or gummy palm trees for your cake from a party store, or you can create your own palm trees using sticks of gum, chocolates and pretzels. Use frosting to create Hawaiian flowers, or buy plastic ones to place on the cake.
Tiki Cake
Tiki gods and statues are traditionally seen as part of Hawaiian culture. You can make tiki cakes as either a flat cake or a roll cake that can stand up like a traditional tiki statue. Tiki statues are usually dark brown, but you can frost tiki cakes in any solid color. Use frosting to draw eyes, nose and a mouth on the cake. You can either base your cake's face and shape on a known tiki god or just do a generic shape and face.
Pineapple Upside-Down Cake
A traditional Hawaiian dessert for adults is the pineapple upside-down cake. To make this dessert, bake a cake on top of pineapple slices and cherries. Caramelize pineapple rings and place them in the bottom of a cake pan, overlapping them slightly. Place cherries in the center of some pineapple rings as well as in any spaces. Pour cake batter into the pan and bake it for an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes at 350 degrees F. Once the cake has baked and cooled, flip the pan over so that the pineapple rings and cherries are on top. You can serve slices of this cake with a rum and Kona coffee sauce.
