Many people who love the beach are often tempted to re-create the magic at home on their patio or deck. Unless you have a pool, this might be a little challenging. The presence of water makes it easier to create a beach ambiance, but it is not necessary. Does this Spark an idea?

What makes the beach so irresistible? The beautiful blue ocean, soft sand, warm sun, tropical plants swaying, comfortable and relaxing furniture, umbrella or shade from the sun and cool drinks are some facets. With these features in mind, you can re-create that feeling at home.
The beautiful blue of the ocean is cool and refreshing. If you don't already have a swimming pool, perhaps you could create a water feature on a smaller scale, such as a waterfall, koi pond or even a running fountain. Do-it-yourself home improvement stores will have all the supplies on hand for you to bring some refreshing water feature to your backyard or patio. If a water feature is out of the question, consider using the bright blue of the sea in your decorations, chair upholstery or umbrella.
Geography
Landscaping your backyard is one of the surest ways to get that beach feeling. Plant banana trees, palm trees and tropical flowers such as hibiscus and bougainvillea that will create the blissful feel of the tropics. If you live in colder climates, you may have to replant every spring or keep plants that are portable in a greenhouse. Banana trees can be cut near the root in the late fall and heavily mulched to regrow in the summer.
Potential
Outdoor furniture has come a long way in recent years and is constructed to withstand extreme temperatures. Adding a table and some chairs with beach-themed colors will transform your space into a comfortable retreat. Pop a colorful umbrella over the table for shade and ambiance.
Add some citronella candles to chase away mosquitoes and some luscious flowering plants near the furniture to capture. Outdoor canopies are also an inexpensive way of providing shelter from the sun and mosquitoes.
Function
Now that the fundamentals of decorating the deck or yard for the beach have been obtained, you will want to consider the extras that pull it all together for entertaining. A proper barbecue grill is essential. There are many sizes and variations available, depending on the amount you cook outside and how often. Go with something sturdy from a well-known dealer so that it will last during several seasons.
Consider either building or purchasing your own tiki hut or bar for entertaining. What's a beach without some tropical drinks? Stock it with a small refrigerator and some brightly colored plastic bar glasses and serving trays.
Effects
A good beach party will last from daytime to nighttime if you have effective lighting. Purchase tiki torches and citronella oil to light the pathways around your yard or use small solar lights. Hanging some paper lanterns or strings of lights will keep the party going into the evening, and candles are always a good lighting resource. Just make sure they are protected from winds in a hurricane globe or other glass covering.
