Planning Your Trip
Most visitors to Hawaii fly into Honolulu International Airport on the island of Oahu, and then catch a connecting flight to the smaller islands. There are some flights that go directly to Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island as well. All major domestic airlines and some international airlines fly to Hawaii.
The weather in Hawaii is pleasant most of the year. In the higher elevations, it can get cool, so if you are planning to hike or take a tour into the mountains, bring warmer clothing. You should also bring clothing for wet weather, as some areas do experience heavy rain.
You should consider renting a car when visiting Hawaii in order to see everything that the islands have to offer.
Oahu
Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head are popular tourist destinations on Oahu.
Hawaii's third largest island is also one of its most popular vacation destinations. Oahu is home to Waikiki Beach, and no hotel room in Waikiki is further than three blocks from the ocean. The strip along Kalakaua Avenue features resorts, shopping, and dining. Leahi, also known as Diamond Head, is located on Oahu and offers visitors opportunities for hiking; the beach in Waikiki is also popular for surfers. For visitors looking to experience history, Oahu is home to Pearl Harbor and the 'Iolani Palace.
Kauai
Kauai is home to Polihale Beach.
Kauai is an ideal destination for those looking for a more adventurous vacation. Kauai is the fourth largest and northernmost island of Hawaii, and home to jagged mountain peaks, rain forests, and lush valleys. There are five main resort destinations on Kauai and two state parks. Kauai is also home to the famous Hanalei Bay, where you can view stunning sunsets.
Maui
Maui is known for spectacular sunsets.
Maui is the second largest Hawaiian island, but one of the least populated, so it is a good choice for vacationers looking for privacy and relaxation. Most of Maui's resorts are located on the sunny western coast. A trip to Maui isn't complete without a visit to Haleakala National Park, home of Maui's highest peak and environments ranging from desert to rain forest.
The Big Island
The Big Island is home to a number of waterfalls.
Kilauea Volcano, the world's most active volcano, is located on the Big Island of Hawaii in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Hawaii has a wide variety of climates, from tropical shores to snow-capped mountains. Most visitors come to the Big Island to view the volcanoes, but the island is also home to a number of historic and heritage sites, as well as the Big Island's largest city, Hilo.
Lanai and Molokai
Lanai is Hawaii's smallest inhabited island, known for its peace and tranquility. There are several large resorts, but the island retains a rustic feel with only 30 miles of paved roads. Molokai, another small island, is considered to be the island that has stayed most true to Hawaiian traditions. It is home to several small hotels and is known for excellent sport fishing.
