Party Activities For Senior Citizens

BINGO is just one party activity for senior citizens.

Organizing party activities for a group of senior citizens offers you a wider variety of options than you may expect. Group activities are an ideal way to add structure to your party and allow seniors to bond over lighthearted entertainment. When selecting party activities for seniors, it is also important to keep in mind what is appropriate for their age range. Does this Spark an idea?

Hot Potato

Gather everyone in a circle and have them pass around a small, lightweight box while music (big band or western swing would be appropriate) plays in the background. Once the music stops, the player holding the box must take out a slip of paper from inside the box and perform the silly activity written on the slip. For example, the directions could read "Talk like Donald Duck" and the last player holding the box would have to speak in quacks like the famous Disney character.

Name That Tune

Program a mix of appropriate song clips to play at the party and have everyone guess the artist and song title. For a group of senior citizens, an ideal mix would include big band (Duke Ellington), jazz (Billie Holiday), pop vocal (Frank Sinatra) and classic country (Roger Miller). For prizes, you can give everyone copies of the mix featuring the full length songs used for the game.

Auction Party

Holding an auction party is a good way for senior citizens to unload some clutter or offer up valuables with the proceeds going to themselves or a favorite charity. Auction parties are ideal for larger groups as there will be more items and more participants to bid on each item. There are several different types of auctions that you can choose from. For example, if you want it to be subdued, you can hold a silent auction where all of the bids are written down and the winners are determined at the end of the auction without the presence of an auctioneer.

Trivia Night

Playing trivia is a fun way to exercise the brain and allows seniors an opportunity to bond over their shared history. Ask questions that cater to an older group and that cover a variety of topics such as politics, history, fashion, cars and arts and entertainment. For example, trivia questions about Doris Day movies, the Bay of Pigs and Studebaker sedans are more appropriate for a group of senior citizens than trivia questions about Justin Bieber.
