Mermaid Ideas For Halloween

Dress as a mermaid costume for a Halloween costume party.

Mermaids are mythical creatures that are half woman and half fish. They show up in books, movies and children's toys. Mermaids can also be used as a theme for a Halloween costume. There are many ways to create a mermaid costume for adults and children including some quick and easy methods that don't require any sewing. Does this Spark an idea?

Famous Mermaids

Famous mermaids include characters from books, movies and popular culture. One famous mermaid is Princess Ariel from Disney's movie, "The Little Mermaid." Make a homemade "Little Mermaid" costume in a few easy steps. Hot glue some seashells onto a bra or bikini top. Wrap purple tulle from the waist, around the legs of the wearer. Add a tail by making a tutu to go around the knees of the wearer. Accessorize with a long-haired red wig.

Another famous mermaid is Barbie from the movie, "Barbie in a Mermaid Tale." Dress like Barbie by wearing a long blond wig with a strip of pink hair. Wear a pink bikini top and sew a mermaid tale out pink iridescent fabric.

Swimming Mermaid Costumes

Mermaid costumes are particularly appropriate for a Halloween swimming party. Make a mermaid costume that you can actually swim in. Have someone help trace around your legs from the waist down (keep legs and feet together). Use a nylon or Lycra fabric to sew a tube for the start of a mermaid tail. Cut a fin shape of two pieces of fabric and sew them together and sew it to the bottom of the tube to finish the tail.

Another option is to wear a blue- or green-colored bathing suit and create a removable tail. Wear the full costume until you enter the water and then remove the tail.

Generic Mermaid Costumes

Create a generic mermaid costume to wear at Halloween. Wear a bikini top in any color. Create a tail in a matching color. A tail can be created by cutting two piece of fabric in a tail shape. Fill the interior with quilt batting and sew the two pieces of fabric together. Attach the tail to a belt that goes around the waist. Wear matching tights and the bikini bottom along with the belt and tail.

Another way of creating a mermaid costume is to dress in a bikini top and a mermaid-style skirt. A mermaid-style skirt is one that is close to the body and flares out at the bottom by the ankles. Choose a blue or foam green color to most closely resemble water color.

Other Mermaid Costume Ideas

There are many ways to create a mermaid costume. Even an infant can dress like a mermaid. Dress your infant in a light green or blue one-piece body suit. Cut a tail shape out of two pieces of soft material. Create a sack for baby's legs and attach it to the body suit with snaps.

Another method of creating a mermaid costume is to wear a bikini or tank top and a pair of leggings in a matching color. Embellish the outfit with seashell appliques. Create a fin by cutting a fin shape out of cardboard. Cut it in half and paint it to match the leggings and top. Glue each half of the fin onto the top of a pair of socks or shoes so when the feet are together, it resembles a fin.
