Snack Crafts For Kids

Give your children a good start by giving them healthy snacks.

Snack crafts teach young children about healthy eating. They involve children in the preparation of food and can make the eating experience more fun. By creating your own snacks you can ensure that you are not loading kids with sugar and salt. You can control the ingredients. Try to make the activity as well-rounded as possible by including activities that promote large motor skills.

Cereal Necklace

This snack craft is reminiscent of the candy necklaces you buy at the store, but instead of sugar-loaded candy you will by using healthy cereal choices. Provide the kids with elastic string. Choose a cereal with a ring shape like Cheerios. The kids will thread the string through the cereal ring (which promotes motor skills). This activity can also be modified to help teach children about pattern and color.

Build-A-Snack

Kids can build things with this project. Cut small cubes of cheese, any hard variety that your children enjoys will work. Buy a bag of stick pretzels. Insert the stick pretzel into a cheese cube. Your children can build small buildings or farm fences by connecting the pretzel and cheese combos.

Gingerbread Anytime

Building gingerbread houses doesn't have to be limited to Christmas time. It can used as a snack craft anytime and it doesn't have to be houses. You can build trains or towers; whatever your child is interested in. Provide graham crackers, peanut butter (to use in place of frosting) and fruit snacks (for decorations). This craft is an perfect opportunity for kids to use their imaginations and work with their hands.

Puzzle Time

This snack craft not only promotes motor skills but requires problem-solving skills. You and your child can make a favorite sandwich together -- it can be ham and cheese or peanut butter and jelly. You can use a small knife to cut the sandwich into different shapes. Mix the shapes up and let your child put the puzzle back together.
