Luau Beach Party Games

The ocean, the sand and the smell of salt water---the beach is an ideal place to hold a luau-themed party, as authentic Hawaiian luaus are traditionally held on the beach. If you are hosting a luau beach party, provide entertainment for your guests with fun games that correspond with the luau theme and the beach location.

Hula Contest

The hula is the traditional dance of Hawaii, and in this game, guests are judged on their hula-dancing abilities. You, as the host of the event, play the role of the judge, and the guests are the contestants. Provide each guest with a lei and a grass skirt. As you play Hawaiian music, guests perform their best hula dance. At the end of the song, award ribbons to the three best dancers.

Relay Race

This relay race is inspired by Hawaiian couture. Fill two buckets with grass skirts, sunglasses, flip-flops, Hawaiian shirts and leis. Divide party-goers into two teams and have the teams form single-file lines. Give each team a basket. On your mark, the first player in each team must put on all of the items in the basket, run to a beach chair that is 15 feet away and sit in it, then run back to the basket and remove the Hawaiian gear. Once the first player has completed the task, the next player may proceed with his turn. The game continues in this manner until every member of one of the teams has successfully completed the task at hand. This team is the winner of the game.

Seashell Hunt

Send party-goers on a seashell hunt. Give each person a sand pail and a small shovel. At the sound of a whistle, players disperse on a hunt to find as many seashells as they can. After five minutes elapse, blow the whistle again to signify the end of the hunt. Players reassemble and count their shells. The player who finds the most shells wins the game.

Spear Throw

Spear throwing is an ancient form of hunting that was commonly used by the natives of the Hawaiian islands. In this game, players practice their aim and their spear-throwing abilities. Set a large watermelon on the ground and give guests three darts. While standing 10 feet away from the watermelon, players throw each of their darts, trying to get them to pierce the watermelon. Award five points for each dart that pierces the watermelon. The player who earns the most points wins the game.
