A costume swimming party will be entertaining for children.
Children love swimming and they love to dress-up. Combine the two for a memorable birthday party or event. A costume swimming party can be a great time, but coming up with costumes that are compatible with swimming can be a challenge. Be sure to remove any parts of the costume which may interfere with swimming before allowing the child in the pool.
Mermaids
Mermaids are a natural costume choice for a swimming costume party. Commercial mermaid costumes can be purchased at costume or party stores or can be made with some simple sewing. Buy a solid colored one piece bathing suit and some fabric to match. Cut out a tail fin shape about the same length as the child from the hips to the floor. Turn the fabric inside out, sew and stuff it with batting. Attach the tail fin to the child by sewing the fin to a wide satin ribbon and tying it to the child's waist. Remove the tail before swimming.
Fish
Create a fish costume for your little swimmer. Buy a one-piece swimming suit for girls or swimming trunks for boys. Create scales to attach to the costume out of waterproof fabric. Make egg-shaped pieces of fabric. Sew the two pieces together inside out and then flip them so the proper side of the fabric shows and sew the rest of the edges together. Make enough of these egg shapes to cover the entire swimsuit. Sew one end of each scale to the suit. It's best to sew the scales in rows. Keep water safety in mind when creating the costume.
Pirates
A pirate costume can be created by using a black or brown one piece swimsuit for girls and black or brown swimming trunks and a black or brown T-shirt for boys. Sew a white triangle of waterproof fabric to the front panel of a black swimsuit or black T-shirt. Add a wide piece of contrasting fabric around the waist to look like a belt. Create a buckle out of gold lame fabric. Use waterproof make-up to create dramatic eyes and a beard on boys. Pirate hats can be purchased at dollar stores or costume shops. Remove hat before swimming.
Lifeguards
A lifeguard costume is quick and easy to create. Choose an orange swimsuit. A solid-colored suit is best. Add a whistle around the neck, a flotation device in hand and some sunglasses and you have a lifeguard costume. Do not put a whistle around a young child's neck, as it may pose a choking hazard. Remove whistle and sunglasses before swimming.
