Seniors can find discounts at many restaurants.
Although a senior citizen is sometimes defined as a retired or elderly individual, organizations such as AARP represent people age 50 and over, and many restaurants extend senior discounts to those 55 and above. A number of well-known restaurants offer menu deals or percentages off the total bill in an effort to ensure that everyone can enjoy reasonably priced meals, including retired seniors or those living on a fixed income. Elephant Bar Restaurant
Elephant Bar Restaurant is a lively, tropical-themed casual chain founded in 1980. Besides providing an enjoyable ambiance, the eatery's focus is value, and the restaurants pride themselves on their heaping portions. Although Elephant Bar doesn't offer a menu specifically for seniors, they do offer the Senior Explorer VIP card, which entitles those age 60 and above to a 20 percent discount on lunch or dinner entrees. With an emphasis on pan-Asian cuisine, the dishes that diners may order at the restaurant include shrimp spring rolls, vegetable pad Thai, chicken teriyaki, French dip sandwiches, mahi-mahi, braised lamb shanks and Mongolian beef. The Elephant Bar is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week.
Coco's Bakery Restaurant
Coco's Bakery Restaurant was first established in Orange County, California, in 1948, and as of 2010, claimed approximately 110 locations. The family friendly restaurant and bakery strives to provide a comfortable environment, encouraging customers to come hang out. A special menu for diners age 55 and over is available; it includes bacon with eggs and pancakes, buttermilk pancakes with eggs, a cheddar cheese omelet with breakfast potatoes, cheese-topped scrambled eggs with spinach and bacon, and oatmeal with cinnamon apples. Each Coco's location offers breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Coco's Bakery Restaurant has locations in California, Arizona, Nevada and Colorado.
IHOP
Founded in 1958 in Toluca Lake, California, IHOP, also known as The International House of Pancakes, is a nationwide casual dining chain. As of 2010, the restaurant boasted about 1,500 restaurants throughout all 50 states. The relaxed eatery offers a special menu for those 55 years and older, with many locations also extending a 10 percent discount or half-priced dinner entree on a particular evening to seniors. IHOP's senior menu includes pancakes with eggs and bacon or sausage, buttermilk pancake stack, grilled tilapia with hollandaise sauce, French toast with bacon or sausage, pot roast, the senior breakfast sampler platter and Mediterranean lemon chicken. Each IHOP is open seven days a week, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Denny's
The first Denny's opened in 1953 in Lakewood, California, with the restaurant eventually growing to become the largest family dining chain in the United States, with more than 1,500 restaurants nationwide as of 2009. Denny's offers several deals for seniors, including a 20 percent bill discount for AARP members between the hours of 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily, as well as coffee priced at $1.00 for AARP members at any time. Additionally, the restaurant has a specially priced menu for seniors, with dishes such as grilled cheese sandwiches, country-fried steak, two-egg omelets, grilled shrimp with rice pilaf, Belgian waffles with eggs and bacon or sausage, meatloaf, and scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese. Denny's restaurants are open 24 hours a day and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.
