Medieval Fair Clothing Ideas

There are many ways to dress in medieval styles.

Dressing in costume for a medieval fair is a fun way to bring the past to life. There are several different styles of clothing to choose from to represent different professions and income levels during the medieval period. Choose a costume that fits your style and budget to share in the fun.

Knight

A knight costume is a popular choice for a medieval fair. A knight's costume is one of the more expensive ideas because of all of the metal necessary to complete the look. Wear plate or chainmail armor. Many medieval costume stores sell armor for costumes. You can also wear leather armor, or for an costume on a budget costume, simply wear metal-colored fabric. Wear sturdy cotton fabrics under the armor and a tunic over chainmail. Carry a sword and shield.

Commoner Man

A commoner costume is easy to put together. Wear a renaissance shirt with long, puffed sleeves. Pair the shirt with tight-fitting breeches and knee high or thigh high boots. Wear a thick leather belt around your waist, and add long leather gloves or a leather vest to the outfit. If possible, wear your hair long and flowing to add to the effect. Wear a renaissance hat to look like a merchant, or a cloth hood to look like a farmer.

Commoner Woman

The commoner woman costume is similar to the men's costume, with a few changes. The women wear long skirts that trail the ground. Tuck a billowing blouse into the skirt. Wrap a corset-style belt under your bust line or around the waist to create a cinching effect. Use either a low-cut shirt or a shirt with a higher neckline for a more modest fit. Wear your hair long and flowing, and wear sturdy, short boots. Add a wreath of flowers or a pretty ribbon to your hair.

Princess

Putting on a costume of a princess or other wealthy woman is a fun way to dress up for a medieval fair. Princesses were able to wear much richer fabrics and prettier styles of clothing. Wear an under-dress of a flowing fabric that fits loosely, and put on a colored over-dress with an empire waist. The over-dress should be made of embroidered fabrics featuring gold or silver thread. Use velvet or velour to simulate the opulence of a princess or wealthy woman. Wear delicate slippers instead of boots.
