Destin, Florida has an array of lodging choices for military personnel.
Known for being a great family and weekend destination, Destin, Florida is a resort town on the Gulf of Mexico and very near several military installations. It was named Best Beach in America by Southern Living in 2009 and has been dubbed the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village."
Base Housing
From dormitories to four-bedroom homes, there are many options for short-term and long-term housing. Of the 680 units on nearby Hurlburt Field, 52 are reserved for officers and 628 are for enlisted personnel. All housing units are equipped with central heating and air-conditioning along with washer and dryer hookups, stove, refrigerator, dishwasher and garbage disposal.
Local Market
Destin offers many real estate options from apartment rentals to renting or buying a home or condo. This may be a preferred or necessary option for some, especially as on-base housing tends to have waiting lists. Florida law allows for military personnel on waiting lists to break leases off-base with certain procedures without penalties.
Resort
The Destin Army Recreation Area is a local resort open to Department of Defense civilians, active duty military personnel and retired military along with their families. Just minutes from the Gulf of Mexico, the area features several types of lodging including a hotel, studios, apartments, villas and RV sites. Some accommodations are pet-friendly. Other amenities include a swimming pool, playgrounds, picnic areas and a full-service marina.
