Maui Activities In February

Maui has beautiful weather, even in February.

No matter when you visit Maui, you will never be bored. You have so many activities to choose from that you probably wish you could add days to your vacation. Most of the activities on Maui are offered any time of the year, but there are some activities you can only experience during a particular month. February is one of the peak visiting months, offering many activities outside the usual tourist track well worth checking out.

Whale Watching

February is one of the best months for whale watching. Humpback wales migrate from Alaska to Hawaii in December to give birth and to mate and they leave in April. You can either take a whale watching cruise or find a spot along the Maui coastline and keep your eyes open.

Chinese New Year Celebration

Chinese New Year is celebrated in Lahaina. The two-day festival starts with a lion parade on Friday and on Saturday Front Street closes for a street festival. At the street festival you can find martial arts demonstrations, traditional Chinese music, food, children's crafts, calligraphy drawings and Chinese massages just to mention few of the activities. Huge amount of firecrackers is set off every hour to scare the bad spirits.

Maui Plein Air Paint Invitational

This art event hosts 25 best plein air painters from Hawaii and the mainland. Plein air painting comes from French and means painting outside, and that is exactly what the artists do. For one week all the artists spread around Maui to paint what they see around them and the public will have a chance to meet the artists and watch them at work.

Maui Whale Festival

Maui Whale Festival is a month-long event celebrating the endangered humpback whales. The event starts with a Run for the Whales event at the beginning of February. Run for the Whales offers a choice of a 5K, half marathon or children's 2K races along the South Maui coast. All the proceeds benefit marine education programs for Maui schoolchildren.

Whale Day Parade and Celebration is held in the middle of February. The day begins with a parade traveling along the South Kihei Road all the way to Kalama Park where the celebration is held. The parade has music, floats, gymnasts, marching bands from local schools, costumed characters and a life-size humpback whale balloon. When the parade is over, the celebration starts. At the park you can find live music from some of the local musicians, food from some of the Maui's best restaurants and a crafts fair that has environmental displays, crafts from local artists, activities for children and information about whales.

Surfing

Winter months mean big waves all over in Hawaii and Maui is not an exception. If you are not experienced look for spots with small waves to learn and check ocean conditions with the lifeguards. For kitesurfers and windsurfers winter months offer bigger waves but less consistent wind conditions. If you don't want to learn surf yourself, sit comfortably on the beach and watch some of the worlds best surfers do their thing.
