Invitations
Write out invitations for your luau pool party on a fake airline ticket or boarding pass. Give your street address, but follow it with a Hawaiian city and island. Fill in details for date, arrival time, flight number, and specify that a meal or snacks and beverages will be provided by Hawaiian Airlines. Invite guests to wear Hawaiian shirts and bring swimsuits and towels.
Decorations
Decorate with palm fronds, orchids, hibiscus, birds of paradise, or whatever tropical-looking flowers you can get from a florist. Tiki torches create an instant island atmosphere while citronella candles will keep mosquitoes away from your luau pool party, particularly if it is held in the evening. Offer your guests grass skirts, leis and shell necklaces to wear outside the pool. Inflatable palm trees and fish may be available at party supply stores and cruising your local dollar store periodically may turn up some very inexpensive tropical-themed decor items.
Food & Drink
A traditional luau includes a roasted pig. A more doable version would be pulled pork sandwiches. Offer plenty of moist towelettes so sticky pork fingers don't go into the pool. Hawaiian pizza may not be traditional, but it fits the theme and will surely be a crowd pleaser. For lighter fare, offer sushi or shrimp cocktail and tropical fruit like pineapple, kiwi, papaya and mango to snack on. Serve fruity cocktails like pina-coladas poolside in a half coconut shell with a hula girl straw, flamingo stir stick, cocktail umbrellas, orchid blossoms or tropical fruit kabobs. Make sure your guests have plenty of water too, to avoid dehydrating while playing in the pool. Serve beverages in colorful plastic cups to keep any glass from making its way poolside.
Activities
Get some Hawaiian music and turn it up. Make sure you have some limbo music and a pole for a competitive game of limbo with prizes. Keep guests busy in the pool with float toys and a game of marco polo. Give out a prize for the best dressed guest. Have a hula hoop contest and award prizes to the guests who can hula the longest, and hula with the most hoops without dropping one.
