College de France

The College de France, which places a high value on faculty research, has as its mission a dedication "to promote French research and ideas abroad, and to participate in debate on major world issues," according to the Madrasi website. The college prides itself on its freedom of research and, to keep innovative ideas flowing from the college, the College de France is organized by chairpersons in an array of academic disciplines, from mathematics to philosophy. Chairpersons change frequently. As the College de France describes on its website, "a mathematician may succeed an historian ... or a linguist an economist. No university rank is required of the person who is put forward; all that counts is the importance and originality of his or her work." The College de France is therefore able to exercise freedom in the teaching and research activities done by professors and other members of the faculty. The libraries at the College de France are home to a collection of rare books, and the libraries themselves attract a number of foreign researchers.
